I love this one too! Perfume is a Japanese girl band, I believe. Pentatonix also did Pretender, all in Japanese. The comments are full of praise for their pronunciation

Pentatonix has two collaborations with the Japanese girl group, Little Glee Monster. Recommend those collaborations, Dear My Friend and Midnight In Tokyo.

Over the years, they've often sung in other languages. French (Papaoutai), Spanish (Despacito x Shape of You), Korean (Gagnam Style), Italian (The Prayer). As a rule, they don't speak the languages, but learn the lyrics phonetically (although, with Kirstie's Latina background, she was probably at least familiar with Spanish if not fluent). It's a very fun medley of songs by Japanese girl group Perfume. The makeup they use in the official video version is wild.

As others have said, Perfume is a Japanese girl group. Pentatonix is very popular in Japan and has toured there many times. FUN FACT: When Pentatonix toured Japan in early 2020, the group, Perfume, came to one of their tour stops. They met with Pentatonix before the concert, gave them small gifts and took pictures with Pentatonix. It must have been surreal for PTX to perform the medley while Perfume was in the audience.

Jonathan: "Well, cologne...perfume, same difference." Laurel: "No." These little interactions between you two are so fun to me. Must be my sense of humor! I crack up each time! Puts me in a great mood! Love the songs, love the makeup, love their talent! They introduce their fans to completely different artists that most of us would never have known about. To get a better sense of what everyone is doing, the official video shows it a bit more. I believe there is a Japanese group called Perfume. It looks like the group is made up of three women. I would have to believe this is a medley of their songs. Thanks for doing this one! It's great live too! I agree, very impressive!

LOL thank you! You’re so sweet ❤️
I love how they’re introducing us to new music and styles. You are so right about that! There are so many facets to Pentatonix. So much to love! I bet the group Perfume were so happy to see this medley.💕💕

You miss a little bit by not seeing the makeup Kirstie is wearing in the official video, but this just shows how good they are live compared to the studio version - which I would recommend you listen to, just to compare it to this version.
As Rebecca said below, singing in another language is not particularly unusual. Virtually all opera singers sing in multiple languages, most of which they don't actually speak (German, French, Italian, etc.). They just learn the sounds phonetically, and since PTX memorize so many lyrics, and melodies, and harmonies (which are often just noises, not words), remembering the phonetics isn't a huge deal. But the comments on the official video were almost all very complimentary on their pronunciation, especially Kirstie and Mitch as the lead singers, and precise pronunciation is where you can get tripped up when speaking phonetically.
As an example, in the VoicePlay video of The Dragonborn Comes - Skyrim, they sing the entire 2nd half of the song in not only another language, but in a completely made-up language with no real-world equivalent, and from comments I've seen, they do a pretty amazing job of pronouncing it.

Will definitely check out the studio version! And they are right, voicePlay did an excellent job in The Dragonborn Comes!! They really brought it to life.💕💕

None of them speak japanese. Kevin is fluent in Mandarin, but not Japanese. Kirstie and Mitch have watched a lot of anime and such so might be familiar with the intonation. But they sing in different languages now and then. They learn it phonetically. Since most of their background singing is just sounds and combinations, I think they learn it as if they are singing a background thing.

That makes a lot of sense! Learning it and singing it as if it was a background thing.💕💕

Wonder how long they had to practice to get the pronunciation correct? Pretty amaxing!! And we KNOW Japanese don't we? My son gets in my car with me, takes over the Bluetooth and suddenly I'm in Japan at a dance club! 😂

I have been told by a professor of linguistics that Japanese is very easy for Spanish speakers to pronounce because the sounds are similar. I do speak Spanish whenever I can, and as a child I spoke Japanese, but have lost it since childhood. Point being, all the sounds of Japanese are easy for English speakers to pronounce, so these songs can be learned phonetically, which is what they do. Meanwhile, you missed the official version, and it's by far the cutest and the best. I think you blew it, too. This handheld fan version from the audience just doesn't cut it. For once thing, it's not the entire song, for another, the sound is bad. Go back please, flip the video, put a filter on it, whatever, but do it again. This is bunk. We want the real thing!
