This river has long been a vital resource for local Indigenous tribes, including the Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation, who have historically relied on its abundance of fish and other resources.
In addition to its ecological significance, the region surrounding the Smith River has a rich tapestry of history. This area was first explored by European settlers in the mid-19th century, during the period of westward expansion, when the beauty of the redwoods began attracting loggers and tourists alike. One of the park’s namesakes, Jedediah Smith, was an early mountain man and explorer who ventured into northern California in the 1820s. His adventures contributed to the mapping and understanding of this rugged landscape.
The video was filmed by our filmmaker Roman Khomlyak, who traveled to California in the summer of 2023 to capture the beauty of the redwoods. He explored Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and was drawn to the clear waters of the Smith River. He captured the moment using his Panasonic GH6 camera, showcasing the river’s peaceful atmosphere.
