One of the greatest living British writers is undoubtedly Jonathan Coe, and I wish you'd included him in your list. His "House of Sleep" is one of the most engaging and interesting novels I've ever read.
When it comes to Dicken's my favorite novel is "A Tale Of two Cities." and then of course, "A Christmas Carol.".....and great recommendations over-all......(Except you didn't mention H. G. Wells or Kipling?).
Why did Jane Austen not write under a male pseudonym? Or did she? Why? Because she lived earlier than Charlotte Bronte and George Eliot who used male names. Had society become more anti female?
Sherlock Holms is well known all over the world. He is the greatest man of the 20th century. We love him very much. Thanks to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I'm from Kazakhstan.
