    On the heels of the most devastating wildfire in Colorado history a major Winter storm is causing major problems across the Rockies including heavily traveled i70 through and West of Denver, Colorado. Dozens of motorists and semis found themselves trapped and eventually clogged the entire Westbound section of the interstate as people exited their vehicles and attempted to assist struggling motorists with plywood for traction. Traffic diverted off the nearby frontage road was also halted due to struggling vehicles up the passes.

This happened very quickly, I know from driving down the mountain the roads got bad...really quickly. Regardless they knew the weather was coming in and i even saw a moron in a Mustang. I grew up in the mountains and know how harsh the winter roads can become. My grandfather always told me to carry a gallon of water in my trunk of my car and a pocket knife in my glove compartment. The pocket knife was to cut down some tree branches if stranded on the mountain roads. By placing the the branches behind and in front of the tires helped for traction when getting stuck on the side of the road. ( The old timers are smart and love to share their wisdom!) Tire chains also works well.

      These are not likely shoppers or those looking for some fun on ice. These are mostly those traveling from a job or business in which they are responsible to stay until dusk or even after. This is obviously filmed prior to it getting dark so there will be “rush hour” travelers. I was out before the snow yesterday and saw fewer drivers all around the Denver area than usual, in fact it was way way down. I was all over town and the suburbs so I know first hand. Rather than criticize those who technically should have snow tires and chains in their cars this time of year, why not have a little compassion for those who are told their tires are “all weather” (which are shit for snow and ice) and have not been told they MUST have chains in their car just in case and are simply trying to get home safely????? Sheesh.

      Being that you live there and probably have some idea of the current mountain pass laws etc ( I am from Alberta by the way so certainly surrounded by winter ) , if one has four wheel drive do they give them a pass so to speak even if they have crap for tires and no tire chains with them ?. For highway tractors I realize its a whole different picture because if they enforce the chains they have to throw them on and the constant carry law where they have to have them with just to go over the passes all winter or face the the huge fines if they are caught without or certainly if they get stuck and don't have them.

  • @liberty9348
    @liberty9348 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Pretty standard. Driving in the snow can be tricky. If you don't have the right equipment AND you don't have the right knowledge, you won't get far. I grew up in Truckee, CA. You haven't seen snow till you've been there. The snow berms on either side of HWY 80 can be over 12' tall which is taller than the metal poles they use to mark the side of the road for the snow plows. I drove a 4 wheel drive Toyota (for its reliability in any conditions), had a 2" lift for more clearance, and STUDDED snow tires that I put on after the first snow, which was amazingly like clockwork... around October 31. I also had two batteries installed to make sure it would start in freezing conditions. I have been let through blocked highways by the highway patrol when they looked my rig over and knew I'd make it. It's also important to keep a cell phone, blankets, food, and water, etc. in your vehicle as well. Trick or Treat was always fun in the snow :D Lots of people don't understand that your tires have to keep TURNING to keep control. These monkeys have the steering wheel pinned to the right and are just spinning their tires free. You have to give JUST ENOUGH throttle to turn the tires. If you hit your breaks, the tires SLIDE, and then gravity takes over and you're into the guard rail. TRUCKS also have different weight distributions and are much lighter in the rear. If the tires break free, the LIGHTER portion of the vehicle has less resistance (friction) and will continue at a faster speed, meaning... the truck will end up backward... ALWAYS. This happens to trucks in the rain and mud as well. The best vehicle for the snow is an AWD with balanced weight in the front and back and as low center of gravity as you can get. Subarus dominate the vehicle population in the greater Tahoe area for residents. I'm not a huge Subaru fan, but they work very well in the snow. I imagine the same goes for CO. Anyhow, I share this information in the hopes it helps anyone driving in the snow.

    AND this is what chains are for boys and girls. I lived in Ft Collins CO for years. Besides 4 wheel drive and BFG AT tires I carried 2 yes 2 types of chains. Cable chains for freezing rain and light snow because they go on over the top and you can put em on after you're stuck and also link chains for deep snow. In Colorado weather can change quickly.

      @lawrencejelsma8118 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Studded tires are not necessary. Mountain or snow tires are adequate enough with chains as back up. However, best is driving a 4x4 jeep or truck also when driving over black ice equivalent conditions as my 4x4 pick up truck with snow tires gripped well in 4 wheel drive (low inclines or high declines) to go at least 5-7 mph without putting on chains in black ice on a remote highway. Four wheel drives spread traction diagonally front to back on opposite sides to allow for steering corrections to work better and for tires to grip the road by both sides of a road where one side may have better gripping.

    Being Colorado, I'm sure they were all stoned, so that didn't help.

    Get snow tires, Not all-seasons.
    Get chains or cables for your tires.
    If you car has 4 wheel drive or all wheel make sure it's active.
    If you can, put sandbags or extra weight over your traction tires.
    If you don't know how to drive in the snow, don't go out at all...

      Stationed in Jacksonville NC in the early ‘70’s I saw same when they were hit with 6” in a few hours. I grew up in PA so no worries but it was amusing watching southern drivers. We rolled into a diner to watch and get out of the carnage. Low speed, bumper bangers.

    Oh my Lord what a nightmare. I am afraid of the highway and afraid of driving in the snow. I am a native of Colorado but ever since I was 14 I have had a phobia about semi-trucks and driving the highway. I blame it on when I stole a car with no driving experience and took off from Sterling to get back to Denver. My mom moved us out of the big wicked city to Sterling which is now filled with meth zombies. I now live in Fort Collins which is run by s a t a n i s t. I have been here 40 years and I can't help but wonder what they have planned for Fort Collins. We had the high winds just a week or so ago and I thought the tree out back was going to fall on me. Huge trees were taken down.
    Dear Father above protect us all especially our babies. In Jesus Christ name sobeit -
    P.S. I remember ending up in Boulder the day I ran away from Sterling because I did not know how to exit the highway so I kept driving...

      Another reason we moved out of state years ago. Born and raised there and as of 23 or so years ago, quite being a native state and turned into a concrete jungle with Californians and Texans taking over.
