British bad guys and police are all so civilized...in the author's mind.
It's obvious that the writer doesn't know anything about cars or engines. Putting anything into a cylinder on a engine would result in the engine not running and it would crush anything in a cylinder and probably break the engine. It's a shame but true. Poor research I say.

I suspect these stories fell under the banner of pulp fiction back in the days when it was written - research on details probably was not high on the agenda. Today this type of fiction has been replaced by the extreme action movies which are also not meant to be taken seriously. 😂😂
