My favourite inexpensive water colours are Daler Rowney. You can get a tube set that is quite inexpensive with all the colours you need, and they don't leave a chalky finish. If I want something a bit more specialist, then I go for Derwent watercolours. I find Winsor and Newton don't stay in the palette very well and their cotman ones can be a bit sticky as they dry. I find the real problem ones when it comes to chalkiness are those you get with cheap art sets that are marketed for 'beginners' or children.
I like the Jane Davenport watercolours for a fairly good quality and inexpensive set. I don't like the Cotman either, not only are they sticky, they're puddly if that makes sense? I don't enjoy using them, I don't like how they behave and I don't like their effects. Definitely a regrettable purchase, I'm going to sell or give away the tubes I have 🙃
Yay, this was really helpful Corregan, thanks! I haven't been able to find the Krylon easily so I just bought some Micador for artist's finishing spray. Wish me luck, I haven't tried it yet 😅 I have an inexpensive set of Mont Marte goache paints and I like them, I just upgraded with a couple of tubes of the Reeves, I like that they're easily washable. I might try those Liquitex acrylic goache sometime, I had seen them and they piqued my interest... but I just did a big tax time splurge on a few tubes of Daniel Smith watercolours and decent brushes. So I'm going to try not to buy anything for a while teehee. Arty blessings Corregan 🙂🌈
I use craft paint a lot in my journals because I love the matte finish but I've not tried Arteza brand. I can't wait to check it out --- going to try Rustoleum spray paint on a page too. Thanks for the ideas. Your book of shadows is GORGEOUS!
Sometimes, yes I do, it’s great fun and a good way to start if you feel stressed by a blank page… because it isn’t blank! I also make my own books from recycled books, papers, etc, which is also really fun.
Здравствуйте, большое спасибо за советы, мне очень понравилось. Теперь я смогу начать создание своей книги. Вы мне подсказали какие проблемы могут мне помешать. Спасибо огромное.

I’ve never used Daler Rowney, but I love anything and everything Derwent!
Yes those cheap kid’s sets are the worst for chalkiness!!!

I'm glad you found it helpful!
I haven't tried the micador spray, but it's a very reputable brand, so you should be good!
Lovely books🌛🌝🌜

You will love the spray paint, it’s awesome on paper!
Thank you! Do you use existing books and paint over the pages? I’m new to this concept entirely.

You’re welcome!!!
Do you treat the pages first with a geso type product first before painting?
Not usually, no.
Occasionally I will if the paper is very thin, or sometimes if the paper is shiny.
