Donna Summer "State of Independence"
Donna Summer covered Jon Anderson & Vangelis State of Independence on her 1982 album Donna Summer produced by Quincy Jones. Summers version of the song features an all-star choir including among others Michael Jackson, Brenda Russell, James Ingram, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Loggins, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder. It reached Number 14 in Britain and 41 in the US. Quincy Jones, who produced it, later claimed that it was the inspiration for the USA for Africa collaboration two years later.
Absolutely beautiful. 2024 anyone?
I am 61 now young at heart and this reminds me of my youth x x
Even the intro is better than anything in the charts!
💘LaDonna 4Eva💘
Why is that so important to you?? What in your tiny mind thinks you'd be alone in listening to any song no matter when it was released? I just don't get the need to have people agree with you or like your comment that badly
@@MarcKelly-yp5ywreally good chat! I hope you are having a great day bud!
Quincy Jones was a genius. 27 Grammys and some of the greatest hits in pop music for many different artists.
Donna Summer FOREVER!
AND EVER!!
could only come from the 80s, hidden gem rarely heard these days, glad I was there, love this song, unique, and the lady's voice is beautiful, so feminine.❤❤❤.
The voices that are this tracks backing vocals blow my mind. Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Brenda Russell, Christopher Cross, Dyan Cannon, James Ingram, and Kenny Loggins 🤯🤯the 80's were a totally different animal compared to todays music.
sorry i really cant heard michaels voice in the song im sure he just only credit himself but never sing backing vocals in donna's song
There are video clips showing the choir recording the song - Michael is very much there, along with so many other great voices-
I absolutely agree 👍
❤he is in this just backing really ax
@@hyacynthwiz MJ loved to be a voice from backing. You can hear him singing for his nephews or Stevie Wonder!
Still have the original on vinyl from back in the days.. What a song this was and still is,
This song gave me courage, strength and it got me through living 2 years by myself in downtown San Francisco in my late 20's; thankfully, it was played frequently on WBLX in 1982.
One of the most uplifting songs ever. Beautiful
Check out the cover version "Spiritual High" by Moodswings featuring Chrissie Hynde. You'll love it!
I'm here for Donna Summer. What an amazing woman and voice! SHE WAS the EPITOME of the 70's! "His truth shall abound!": This talent shall NOT be dismissed! I married her, in my mind, a thousand times! Her soul resonates across ALL time! We are so fortunate to have had her as OUR legacy! Tears fall like rain. Such a rare talent. Donna served her capabilities as no other.Just lucky, I guess...
Just a fool in love with one beautiful woman, soul, entity, who once walked, talked, and lived amongst us, was a progenitor of life and freedom from evil concerns. So lucky to have felt her heart! I weep a million tears. I would love to see her neon sign, see her Write a sign in the sky, and hope, and remember...
The amount of amazing musicians singing in the choir is amazing!!
Heavenly voice!!! Rest in eternal peace. Miss Summer you are so missed and loved.
Brings back a lot of memories. What a great singer she was. Thanks for your music Donna
After following Donna Summer's career, this is easily my favorite song by her. I love Jon Anderson and Vangelis' version of their composition, but Donna and Quincy Jones brought the song to such a different and amazing level. Just an amazing song that is in heavy rotation on my playlist. Donna, you are still loved and missed.
My beautiful mum loved this song... I hope you hear it in heaven.. X
One of the best songs I've ever heard. Fantastic
This is such a spiritual song with deep meaning to me - it still waters my eyes and gives me goosebumps to listen to it. RIP Ms. Summer - you were such a gift.
I agree, Jon Anderson is one of my all time favorite writers/lyricist
Me too, beautiful lyrics.
Donna Summers will always be Iconic & The Queen of Disco Forevermore ❤
You must check out the cover version "Spiritual High" by Moodswings featuring Chrissie Hynde!!
I had the privilege of owning this album more than 20 years ago. This was my Favorite song on the album along with The Woman in Me. I had never heard anything so beautiful. I was in my early teens when I owned this album and first heard this song. Fast Forward 30 or more years later in my mid 40's. I am still loving this. It brings tears to my eyes. Rest in Peace LaDonna Gaines Sudano aka Donna Summer.
The album got a nice make over for the 40 years anniversary with some extra tracks…I think iTunes got it! FYI
I have only hear this song before today from Jon Anderson and Vangelis....Donna Summer does a really excellent job. Not too often I hear the same song from two different artists sound outstanding like they do!
A true Queen, a true artist! every time I hear her songs, what a thrill!
So do I! The music of Donna is always linked with good memories. The soundtrack of good times of my troubleled youth!
Country music, Donna being a member of the country music HoF brought me here and my love of reggae made me stay
Vangelis was on fire in the early 80's. On the heels of an Oscar for Chariots of Fire, he gets the cover treatment by Donna Summer!
He did so much better stuff than Chariots of Fire, but this cover is awesome. The music for the original Blade Runner was as good as it gets.
absolute brilliant masterpiece of electro synth pop funk. divine
Thank you Donna. I was a kid when i heard this, it just came back. Your Missed!!!
Beautiful Donna Summer, Beautiful Soul, Beautiful Voice.
Her voice is beyond this time and dimension.
YEP!!
this song was so beautiful and donna sings it so nice, i love to listen to this, it was way ahead of its time
Donna Summer war great! Only she could switch from gospel to disco, from disco to rock with a great success, because she has a incredible voice. She was more than a Disco Queen, she was also a Queen of Hearts, a cristian woman, mother and wife.
Rest in peace Donna! We will never forget you!
Well MJ could do the same easily
Beautifully stated friend.... in the arms of the Redeemer forever.
I LOVE THIS WOMAN'S SOUL...LIKE HOLY WATER TO MY LIPS...
We just love big bands or solo artists and she is as good as it gets on the latter ..RIP .y dear xxx
A Super Song from Donna Summer!
There are several versions of this song floating around. But in my opinion this is THEE best. Power, beauty...when the choir kicks in it just doesn't get any better. Donna Summer's wonderful talent will truly be missed.
“State of Independence” is a song recorded in 1981 from “The Friends of Mr. Cairo” album by Jon Anderson of Yes and Vangelis.
Y
Vangelis composed too for Demmis Roussos....So this song is a poetry itself
LOVE their version
A very underated performer who gave us some great musical memories. I love this one especially and Love's Unkind.
Nearly 2022 and you still bring me to your heart Donna.
I was bumping this before and after that Quincy interview. RIP Donna Summer. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Who's here because of the Quincy Jones article?
CD Johnson me

CD Johnson me😂
Nog steeds een geweldig nummer!!
Still a great number!!😂
Yep, I'm here because of the Quincy Jones interview, too. I remember when this song came out. She was making her transition from disco, which was basically dead by 1982. I hear only a slight similarity between this and "Billie Jean". This and "They Don't Care About Us", yes. I can definitely hear that.
I hear powerful words of wisdom self love and happiness. I always loved this song. It’s very beautiful and meaningful 😀
I worked in an Art Store in Nashville in 1999-2000 and she was one of our regular customers. She came in often to purchase high quality colored pencils, and was always so lovey to those of us who worked together at this small locally owned store in Green Hills. We had many Customers who were in the Music industry, and they were all so kind to us, as this town is their home and this is their neighborhood, and they, like all of us, have hobbies, so, as artist ourselves, we enjoyed showing everyone new products and techniques that might enrich their off-time & artistry. But, full admission, It was always fun to see her roll up in her bad ass range rover, Looking everyday effortlessly gorgeous in yoga pants and a baseball cap with all her hair pulled back in a simple pony tail. xoxo K
A memory to treasure.
@@christinetogwell5440 There will NEVER be another like her!
Still an amazing tune....here in 2024
I MISS YOU SO MUCH DONNA SUMMER. YOU WERE AN INCREDIBLE WOMAN!!! THANK YOU FOR LEAVING US THIS MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG. STUFF JENNIFER LOPEZ..........

Who's here to listen to Donna's amazing voice? Don't give a hoot about Quincy!
Thank you, Chris, for sharing this video of Donna. (Can't believe I've never seen it.)
Quincy Jones brought me here lol
SJMcFly, me too. I still can't find anything like Billie Jean from Michael Jackson in this music. He said bullshit.
Me too. Fuck quincey jones
Bruno Luan exactly lol but I have heard tales of Michael being a malicious person
I don't hear no Billie jean doe
SJMcFly I'm seriously trying to find what he was talking about lol
couldnt believe it was Donna when i first heard it....i thought she was just all disco...this version is Tops!
Disco has already died then.
she was never all disco. she came from musical theater and probably coulve been on broadway. check out her final album 'CRAYONS' that shows her range....her first job was in the musical 'HAIR'
Who’s here because the Quincy Jones interview?
Me but where is it
9 seconds to 14 seconds you hear the bassline with no other music. It is much faster than Billie Jean but does sound similar sequence of notes
its the exact same sequence of notes except the first note is down an octave
BRENT SILBY ok, after you said that I slowed it down and yeah. Barely similar. Just barely.
Cory Me! Listening to it, it sounds similar, but Michael probably told her he was gonna sample 😂
AWESOME SONG & SINGER YESS ICONIC MUSIC LEGEND DIED TO YOUNG DONNA SUMMER R.I.P. Fantastic song!! During Donna's posthumous induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Bruce Sudano, her husband, said that Q produced this great song while Donna was pregnant with her 3rd daughter, Amanda!
I love Donna's version !
Beautiful Song miss you Love You Donna Summers RIP hope your Singning this Song in Heaven
My favorite female singer, great voice and so sexy.Best song of 1982.
Beautiful video.
This was playing in the Co-op! 😂 love hearing random bangers when I’m buying me doughnuts! 🍩
Happy birthday queen of disco
1.30 to 2.45 is one of the best moments in music...ever.
AMEN!
so true!
I'm a musician, so I've played both and there's not Thriller. Listen t the beginning bass line for Rick James Give It To Me Baby. Listen to Billie Jean & Like a Virgin basslines.
Agree!
I'm here because I love the song, I have always found it incredibly moving and has a Christian narrative (for me atleast)
As for Donna Summer, can remember seeing her on the Jools Holland show where she sang ' Let it be', what a class act, beautiful voice and a beautiful woman. Like so many of late, gone too soon.
I have a pretty good idea where she may be, rest in peace sister.
she is definitely giving me a Mary Magdelene vibe in this song. It's very inspiring.
Very few singers can cover a song and make their own , donna summer made this song her song with this brilliant treatment ,
Why do I not recall ever seeing this? They used to play The Woman In Me video back in the day but this is my first time seeing anything for this single. One of my favorite song from Donna.
Just beautiful
Just listen to Michael Jackson and the Dangerous Court Case Deposition 1994 and you have to worry about Quincy's state of mind.
3:35 "I crossed oceans of time to meet you"
Such beauty and talent! Miss her.
Miss You and Your Music So Much!
good cover of a great song written and song by Jon Anderson ( YES) ,and Vangelis...check out Jon Anderson and Toddmobile version.
JA and Todmobile - Wow wow!!!
MJs Billie Jean demos were a few years before this and Michael straight up admitted the main inspiration for Billie Jean came from Hall and Oates “I Can’t Go For That”. Maybe Quincy means this song was the initial inspiration for We Are The World or that MJ owned the publishing to this. Either way it seems Quincy always praises MJ but at the same time throws shade on him. Quincy as genius as he is wasn’t always right in his work with MJ case in point his initial wanting to exclude Billie Jean from Thriller. MJ had that gift and thankfully was headstrong enough to stand up for himself as a songwriter.
That's what I been saying for years man. He always downplays MJ's genius like ''He was a good guy with a great voice but I WAS THE MASTER.'' He seems to forget the fact that none of those 3 albums would have been hits without Michael Jackson. Michael is honestly the reason most people today even know who Quincy Jones is.
SrananKing I’m with ya. As much as Quincy can say he helped MJ get to that level same can be said for Quincy. Like you said most people wouldn’t know nor care who Quincy is if it weren’t for his involvement with MJ. In my opinion the real force in MJs life would have been Bruce Swedien. His engineering and mixing skills are unworldly. His story about using his synesthesia to mix Billie Jean is god acting through him. The other thing that bothers me about Quincy and there are several is his always mentioning MJ surgeries which are one thing but downplaying the fact that MJ had lupus and vitiligo. He still seems to refuse that MJ had vitiligo. Quincy reminds me of a lot of trained musicians, they have a hard time breaking the chains and really just feeling it. MJ was not trained and had something that made him damn near a deity to people through his ability to convey emotion through song and dance. Quincy and all his “knowledge” of scales and life experience could never produce something as raw as MJ could. Whether Quincy is aware of it or not he’s kind of a hater, which is evident in his opinion of modern music, especially rap. Total disregard for the effect it had on people. I respect the old guard and knowledge but Quincy is out of touch. Not sure if he ever really was without MJ being his vehicle to popular culture from 1979 and onward.
Uh, mj didn't say anything about hall and Oates, hall and Oates said that mj said that. That's not the same. Lol like they invented drums going into a heavy base lol not to mention their melody for that baseline was stolen from lipp inc's funky town. 3:32. Go check it
Quincy Jones brought me here...dude is losing it with all this shit.
Put at .75 speed and listen to bassline
Joe Mamaz possibility mixhael Jackson was a genius. Remember that.remember that!! its very much possible.of course we need more proof. hell mike stole 🎵 from the Cleveland orchestra. he was a smooth criminal indeed. hell now that you think of it mike stoled a lot of songs.
Nice! Lovely Donna.
Love this song written by john Andersen from yes .rest in peace Donna.🙏✌.Godbless you Amen 🕊🕊🦋🦋🌹🌹🌻🌼🌷💛
Bono said in his tribute to Donna that his song is in his top 5 songs.
Michael Jackson once again killed it on the background vocals
And "borrowing" the iconic Billie Jean bassline haha
While Quincy Jones borrowed the entire song from Jon and Vangelis...
Lol, Those defensive folk that always say "sound nothing alike", they're the same notes (bassline), slow it down. It's only the bassline that people are mentioning (common sense).. I also heard Louis Johnson performed both and never got a cent from Mike, I love MJ but there were a few people that should have been included more in "his" masterpieces
She's showing us humanity at it's better, an enlightened being, a higher love... Donna was Uniquely suited to cover this song. Beautiful.
Superb, uplifting music
This is from the first collaboration with Quincy Jones, who went on a few months later to record Thriller with Michael Jackson.
The album has this song and a song by Bruce Springsteen, as Donna was trying to go beyond the disco image she cultivated while working with Giorgio Moroder, and it is one of the great albums of the early 80s, where Quincy and Nile Rodgers were making their bids for the title of greatest producer ever.
IMHO again, one of the top songs by one of the greatest popular singers of the 20th century.
And what is with the Rick Jones look? :-)
Michael Jackson sings backing vocals on this track. Funny enough Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson took another track from the J&V album and turned parts of it into parts of the Thriller album. (source Quincy Jones and Jon Anderson)
I like how Donna Summer doesn't go way over the top on this track but presents it beautifully and then at the end really lifts it up. The musical details in this version is a bit simple compared to the Vangelis production. Still both are very good and joys to listen to.
I hear no Billie Jean in this song
Dorcas Hibbard change the tempo to 0.75/0.5
And you no why is because there are no Billie Jean in this it's something that they made up and if it true that not stealing Michael just like sounds
Lwazi Nzimande I did. Still can't see what's same as Billie Jean
Ketosis Kekistani you're supposed to hear it.
Restart the song and change the playback speed... You should hear it.
Lwazi Nzimande that's just silly. Its like those nutcases who used to play some backwards and claim that the illuminati put code words in. Lol if you have to change things to make a point then you're point was crap to begin with
The women with the golden voice RIP Donna
I first learnt of this song in 1997, but not the original version. It was the Murk Club Mix. Loved it back then, and still do today. Give it a listen, although it might not appeal to purists. As that's the mix I listened to lots in my youth, for me it's by far my favourite.
If Michael take this song, and made Billie Jean.... MJ is still a ginus !
you mean a penis?
Genius
onesong2001 I hate u so much, it’s a shame the prince logo is ur pfp
Angie Cares no
The main synth arpeggio riff in the intro and throughout is basically the Billie Jean bass line but twice as fast. Even the low octave root note on 1 and the off-beat of 4 is the same thing. He's right.
I think it's just a direct rip off of the title song from Hair:

Me lembra de uma infancia gostosa.Nostalgia saudavel.
for those not Spanish literate "It reminds me of a joyful childhood. Nostalgia saudavel.😂
A Fave since 80s!
Just beautiful ❤
Stunning song. Pure class. ❤❤
where is the billie jean part
Really Quincy should shut up ; where is the relation between this and Billie jean .This old man who is proud to say that he have 22 women.. He don't have any respect for Nastaja Kinsky his wife ! When Mikael was alive , Quincy wont never say that . It is easy to say anything once people die .
Slow down playback of the video to .5 speed, the keyboard bass is the "Billie Jean" part, same bass line. Although Billie Jean is in a different key
You're right you can hear it if you slow it down. lol
Yes where it is ...
ANAUEL MIKAEL agree completely
It’s funny that all the articles are referring to this as a Donna Summer song. This is a Jon Anderson song, and as much as I loved that Quincy interview, it sounds nothing melodically like Billie Jean. Not the same chords, either.
i totally agree with you Karl and truth is if anyone stole anything it Quincy Jones stilling form Jon Anderson & Vangeils
Karl Meischen you have to listen to the synthesizer that repeating the same Melody. so what happened is the Brecken brothers took synthesizer run slowed it down and transferred into the Billie Jean bass line no I don't have the same course or timing so I believe that's what Quincy was talking about
Daniella Stuart that is so true he was the producer of both songs and you both right full song for fantastic when artists borrow from each other. either way take that keyboard line slowed it down was genius
Do you mean Jon Anderson from the group, "Yes"?
Virgil R Yup, Jon Anderson of Yes wrote this song with Vangelis. Her cover is almost identical. Plus, responding to others re: the synth bass riff: it’s not the same as Billie Jean, even slowed down. Quite different, notes wise, with a mildly similar feel. A riff that’s kinda similar at a different tempo ==//== plagiarism. They’re different songs in every way imaginable!
GREAT SINGER WITH A GREAT SONG!!!
Yes .. a lovely piece of music .. someone else used the right word .. UPLIFTING
State of life, may I live, may I love
coming out the sky, I name me a name
coming out silver word for what it is
it is very nature of the sound, the game
Shablamidi, shablamidashablamidi,
Shot to the soul the flame of Oroladian
(the) essence of the word
the state of independence
Sounds like a signal from you
bring me to meet your sound
and I will bring you to my heart
Love, like a signal you call
touching my body, my soul
bring to me,
you to meet me (here)
Home, be the temple of your heart
home, be the body of your love
just like
holy water to my lips (hey, hey)
Yes, I do know how I surviveyes,
Yes, I do know why I'm alive
to love and be with you
day by day by day by day...
Time, time again, it is said
we will hear, we will see
see it all in His wisdom hear
His truth will abound the land
this truthwill abound the land
this state of independence shall be
Say, yeah-e-yay, yeah-e-yoyeah
e-yay, yeah-e-yo...
be the sound of higher love today
yeah-e-yeah (hey, hey)
I see Donna..I click. Didn't know about QJones controversy till I read the comments. And then reacted with who gives a shit. And looked for another Donna Summer gem "The mystery of love." Miss you Donna.
Donna was the Queen of Disco, she was awesome. RIP Donna x
quincy jones said mj stole this and it became billie jean but... im not hearing it
the bass line in billie jean is a slowed down version of this one
She copied the song made by Jon Anderson and Vangelis. Donna and Quincy may they rot in hell!
@@fatlazypole Covering a song is not "copying" or "stealing". Jon Anderson and Vangelis got paid a lot of royalties for this. This is one of the very few songs where I loved the original but think the cover is actually better. Besides, Donna Summer was a fine and decent human being. May she rest in peace.
SpinyNorman2 Exactly. And what did Donna do? Quincy was the one opening his big mouth.
bcoz Quincy aren't famous thass why he makin some shit in media tobe fame again hshs.
Amazing to think it was that long ago,. I was just 7- yrs old when it came out in the UK. Loved it then and still living it today.
the voice of donna!, wow!
Who else is here because of Quincy Jones???
meeeeeeeeeee
!
DJBLAKMAGIC Quincy is full of shit.
Me and, I really can not find any reasons for the accusations.
Me...and I must say the signature beat of Billy Jean is just faster here. But MJ said he took the beat from the Hall and oats group....but they told him that they didn't think so.I'm a fan of MJ but not a blind fan...FACT IS FACT.
th-cam.com/video/xaz2n6L5XwA/w-d-xo.html This is the proof of Billie Jean REAL Inspiration.
Sounds like somthing from Hair. This video would fit right in the movie.
Hair - Aquarius
Classic Donna Summer..!
My fav DS song x
It's so beautiful to listen to her the way she sings this lovely heartwarming song , she's amazing
Just Great!! I love It...it's totally diferent from what I'm used to listen from Donna!
Fabulous Song!!!!
Simply beautiful!
May she RIP.
Am I the only one that doesn't hear not one but of Billie Jean in this damn song??? Also here because of that outrageous Quincy Jones article. I think he's becoming senile.
me too
Girl, you said it lol I was like I don't hear shit am I crazy? Quincy is losing his damn mind how are trying to stay relevant at 84 yrs old damn that's desperate.
Put at .5 speed and listen to bassline
Anything less like Billy Jean than this is hard to imagine. Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata perhaps?
if mj was not found out to be nonce would he have said this
