Hi! You only need a Silhouette if you plan on creating a stencil (for painting signs or creating t-shirts) for a project. If you simply want to create an image and print it off and frame it you can do that in wordart by saving it as a jpeg. If you don't like using wordart you can absolutely use photoshop to create your word/shape image but it is a more complicated process. Hope that helps!
I'm not familiar with design space :( Can you import jpeg's into design space and then trace them? Perhaps by choosing file then import. Sorry I'm not more help.
