the difference, is the size of the theatre by the amount of seats it has, anything 1,000 and over is considered Broadway anything under 500 to 400 is off Broadway and Off Off Broadway is 90 or less seats its all about the seats not just the building and theatre.

I have seen wicked and phantom of the opera on broadway, rock of ages off broadway. All great shows in their own right.
