Dom isn't playing the beat just on the kick. He's doing the accent on a floor tom on the opposite side of the snare. The kick pattern is a basic single stroke on 2 and 4.

Then watched the live version and he uses a floor Tom. Still glad I learned it this way as much as it was absolute pain. Is your hi hat loud enough to get picked up by the left overhead mic? I know it gets picked up a little bit by your snare mic, but if you want to mix your drums more heavily, you should buy another mic and mic up your hi hat.
