    People that don't use compounds to fill holes a lot, don't understand the magic that is learning the proper hole filling technique. Learning the technique you demonstrated is 100% the difference between filling the holes once, and having to fill every hole twice because it always shrinks a little and misses a small moon shape on one edge. Excellent demonstration :)

    Knowing Lou for several years now, I can say I have never met someone as talented and knowledgeable. Lou is truly one of a kind and is a part of a dying culture. I have the pleasure to work next door to Lou's shop and always love talking and learning about his new projects and ideas. I can't say enough good things about what is going on in that shop and it is hard to put into words the experience I have had around Lou. Hawlys (producer) is a very talented cinematographer and has done a fantastic job bringing Lou's passion for shipwrighting to life. The attention to detail in the making of this video is amazing! Watching these guys film and build the boat is unmatched when seeing it in real life. I hope these videos spark the interest of someone to pick up a saw or grab a hammer, I know it has for me. Keep up the good work guys, see you around the yard!!

    so cool - i have been obsessed with all these videos lately - cant get enough.
    I was actually surprised by the beginning of this video. The process of going through EVERY single screw hole on the boat an scraping seems like it is VERY labor intensive and time consuming. I would think it would pay huge dividends in time savings to make sure when the screws are going in that things remain clean - and to be super careful with the poly-sulf so as to not gunk up the holes.
    Never having built a boat i dont know if thats possible or not - or how long cleaning all the screw holes actually takes but that just shocked me somewhat.
    Either way - so awesome.

    He must have read the instructions on the side of the can. Really that is an art that takes practice. If it isn't over full it's called a birds eye when sanded. My first rodeo on filling holes like this looked terrible and had to spend some time learning how to make that hump he's speaking of. I'm not sure how he would be with one on one lessons but doing this series it feels like I'm in his class. He's the type to show the manufacturers how to use the products they make. He's top notch in my humble opinion😉

    Thanks for showing the two part fairing compound. I’m getting ready to build a boat and had no idea anyone had that, was gonna use a one part which was bothering me (everyone knows that one part adhesives aren’t nearly as good as two partners without having some seriously caustic chemicals in them - not that all two partners are “green”)....
    I like that you use the scraper before a sander......already too much sanding involved in boat building.....so many boat builders spend more than a quarter of their time sanding, most of that is wasted time trying to create a polished mirror only to cover with 3 to 10 more layers of epoxy, primer, paint, clear coat......

  • @Multiverse27

    Alternatively you can use any epoxy combined with dust from your palm sander.

    • @RealLuckless
      @RealLuckless 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sawdust and epoxy can make an excellent filler for a range of uses, but care does need to be taken when choosing a product for capping screws. Don't forget that you want to cap them with a material that you can dig out without ruining the rest of the wood involved.
      Building a good boat is one thing. Building a good boat that is also easy to fix later on is another issue entirely.

    I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the knowledge you have shared and have watched most of this series 3 times. I anticipate each new video, as all the others who are following. I do have two question. Most of the dimensions of the boat have been shared, but the transom dimensions are not. Could you provide those dimensions? Also, working aft from the transom, the vessel flares to its widest width in the beam (maybe 6'6") then tapers back to the transom. Is there any rule of thumb to determine the taper from midship to the transom? I have a few other questions, but want to work through my own process of what I want before I ask. I hope to build this boat, as well as a few others. Thanks

  • @nedkline886

    why care about a little stain or pencil line when you are going to paint over it anyway. i noticed the hardener in the resin too. that fairing compound looks really cool, next spring when i fair my keel i am using it, the hell with west system and all that filler that takes forever mixing. are you selling the skiff when finished, you never told us how long the boat is,, i think i saw 19 feet on one of the side planks. lou thank you very much for all you have taught us.

    Shower thought: what if you put the putty into a piping bag (like the kind you would use for frosting a cake) and cut a fine tip and just pipe the putty into the holes? Would that not work better than a knife?

  • @silva69ers
    @silva69ers 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could put the putty in a zip lock bag and mix by kneeding it, cut a tiny corner off the bag and squeeze it out into the hole like you would icing a cake

  • @gary24752

    If you were to put masking tape down before drilling the holes you could fill the holes without getting the putty were it did not belong. Right after placing the putty pull off the masking tape and you have a clean job.

    When you put the spatula with paste of the one part of the epoxy to the other without cleaning, it does not affect the rest of the hardener in the bucket?

    • @southjerseysound7340
      @southjerseysound7340 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really on this type of product.Worse case is you have a tiny string of rubbery like trash to pull out.But that is only if it sits for a long time.It can touch and wont really harden until you actually mix and work it together and chances are that'll little bit will get mixed next.
      You try not to do that but on a big project like that its not a big deal since it'll get used next.Now if that was the only batch you're making I'd recommend getting it out of there though.Because after sitting you'll have a partially cured piece that wont mix in that needs to be trashed.

    • @polakis1975

      Polis Dimitriadis No problem,I know if you do that with some stuff it'll ruin it.But in this case its not as critical.Most fairing compounds like this wont fully harden until they change colors,worse case is it turns to a rubbery waste.
