The LBS sold their facing tool! My fixed drive side shell looked worse than that! 4 hours later after filing and testing the shell with machinists bluing against the cup flange, I got that result! Test a prospective bike shop and ask if they have this tool. If not, I'd question their commitment to service. Threaded Shimano external bearing cranksets are still common and square, octalink, and Issis still are out there. Threaded is coming back with its warts and all.
A noisy BB is usually due to be installed dry. This tool is really good when you add a chain guide BB mount. Because cranks becomes to short and chain line is ruined because of the thickness of the chaineguide. This tool is practical but not for what you are claiming about.
well if the BB is not seating all the way down because of a big paint chip if it rotate under pressure it may move but this tool is precious to fix a chain line that stick out too far.
I understand your point to make the surface parallel between right and left faces, because the bb shell will sit on them. But I'm not sure how much precision you can achieve with that tools? It is about bearing alignment, right? So it should be in a very tight tolerance of parallelism.
the exact width of the BB shell is usually not as important as its facing. Most of the BB has a tolerance +/-1mm in a shell width (or even a bit more) with no issues. Also one could use the width adjustment washers, which is widely sold
The facing tool's main problem is the poor surface finish left behind . Also the thread in the bottom bracket may not be perfectly perpendicular . I lap the surface afterwards to keep dirt from entering absolutely best standard possible .

I bought a pair of taps for bottom bracket thread cleaning which is much more effective . They were $800 dollars , Australian for a pair .

I draw filed mine.
The facing tool's main problem is the poor surface finish left behind . Also the thread in the bottom bracket may not be perfectly perpendicular . I lap the surface afterwards to keep dirt from entering absolutely best standard possible .
I don't have enough tension at all, so my facing doesn't progress. Too much cutting oil!
This procedure is more aimed at press - fit bottom bracket problems .
