In S. Calif, we plant for a Fall crop. Usually put the plants in July. This year, I'm a bit late in August; so I chose some quicker growing determinate varieties and quick growing cold tolerant ones. Roma and Siberia seem the most promising at this point.
@@mddowdy If you get sun in that location all day, even in Winter.... I think you'll be fine. If they get shade, the day length may slow the growth. If it's up against a short wall that retains heat, even better.

Yes, they are good. Little fingers were the first ones I ever grew. They looked a little funky because of my soil composition at the time but you've motivated me to grow them again after 3 years. Thanks!
Great Video Jess! I started my very FIRST garden on my patio this spring because of you. It is small (only peppers and tomatoes), but an accomplishment for me nonetheless! I asked my hubs to build some more boxes (got the eye roll and next year speech, still working on him) because our summer garden is still producing and I need room for fall items and we still have time for more summer veggies. Thanks for the reminder I need to plant some lemon squash. Never had it before and I bought seeds a few weeks back. Thank you for everything you do. True inspiration and have made gardening fun again instead of a chore.

Never did it before, but thanks to Jess, MIGardener and Mark from Sufficient Me, o and not forgetting Charles Dowding, I am so in love with my fall and winter garden and everything is doing great. Sometimes I have to do a double-take when you post your videos. Just this morning, I filmed my Wednesday video "What I'm Planting in my Fall Garden" LOL! Love your choices. When you roast daikon radishes, they taste like Brussels sprouts.

This year was bad all over with the wonky winter. This summer was the first we had to use frozen bottles for our bunnies and worst mosquitoes I've ever seen up here had to bring the bunnies in for a month and a half because the mosquitoes were really at them for that chunk of the spring. Bugs definitely had a big win this year.
I'm the same way. I have not gotten much from my summer garden so I'm going crazy for fall. And I'm just so happy and excited. Gardening makes my soul smile.

Would love to hear sometimes what you make for supper, with all your produce. Tonight we had.a wonderful pasta sauce, 100% home grown ingredients, including the protein. The only thing I slacked off on was the pasta...that came from a pasta maker at the local farmers market.
Im planting my first fall garden this year...bc of your video last year. I'm happy to see you do another fall garden video! Who know how many will be inspired.
I love to hear other gardeners that are like me.... and their seed boxes... and their hopes and dreams for the next season. I'm in a zone 8b to 9, depending on the year. Riverside County, CA, USA. I'm also planning on parsley, cilantro, dill, and bunching onions. A few fresh herbs added to the canned foods, or even a salad, can really make a difference. I'm glad you mentioned calendula, because I forgot those. I grow pansies and Johnny Jump Ups through Winter. Last Sept, I tried planting parsnips in 15 g. pots and they worked well. They harvested in Spring. You can have your brussel sprouts though. Chuckle. I'm guessing that Winter will be early this year; because our nights have been mild most of the Summer. So, I'm thinking I should plant a month earlier than I normally would, and be prepared to try fleece row covers. I discovered some sprouted potatoes in the garage and I'm experimenting with that as well in 25 g. black tree pots. Hoping there's enough time to get a harvest during the holiday season. We don't get as cold as you do though, rarely below freezing at night. I planted a 4'X6' area with carrots last week. I covered them with trash bags so the soil will stay moist until they sprout. For now, that planter has shade cloth as well, because the days are triple digit heat. Hoping it works, because, like you, we enjoy carrots. They're cheap in the stores, but if I don't have to shop, all the better. Keep up the good work... may God bless it all and prosper your family.

Still loving your gardening videos the most! I recently heard of a trap for squash and melon bugs that I will try this fall and again next Spring. Even at my age, I learn new things and like to try them out. This trap is sort of a decoy. You take some rinds/trimmings or damaged fruit off your melons and squash plants and put them in a shallow bowl or plate in the garden, covered with a paper plate, or a board or something to shade it and make it more attractive to the pests. In the mornings and afternoons you grab up that plate with the bugs and feed it to the chickens or drown the bugs in soapy water. Like I said, I haven't tried it yet, but will do so. Can't really hurt anything to try! Noticed your shoe box file method of storing your seeds. I keep mine in those little binder-type things made to hold DVDs/CDs in the plastic pockets. I can then clearly see the envelope (if any) or my labels (printed off the internet with pics and reference info). I used to add little index tabs to help me organize by type, like Brassicas, Legumes, Melons, etc. Now I have so many seeds and varieties that I keep separate 'books' of most kinds and organize them alphabetically. They fit on shelves easily and I can keep them near my canned goods where the temps and darkness are best for them. Any seeds I plan to store for long-term are treated differently, but the ones I need ready access to for planning and planting are easy for me to find or peruse, and I have a lot less trouble with spilling open packets. I can even create a 'Using these seeds next' binder to carry out to the garden with me on planting day, complete with a copy of the garden plan and important dates/notes in a plastic page protector, and the plastic sleeves keep them dry. If you have a food saver, you can create your own pocketed pages by heat-sealing little pockets in heavy duty page protectors from the office supply store and putting them in a regular 3-ring binder.Just snip the tops of each pocket on one side for access. I use a lot of my Autumn greens like kales, sorrell,and spinaches in my soups and stews, added torn in small pieces towards the end off the heat to just let them get wilted into the broth and fortify it with all those great vitamins. One of my favorite ways to use it, even if I had to freeze some for use deep into the winter.
Great video! Never even knew about fall gardening until this year. I'm gonna try it! I have peas, carrots, radishes, and some pumpkin and melon plants I'm going to put where my zucchini were. I grew that purple cauliflower last winter and boy was that fantastic! I have just started some of those along with the green macerata. I also grew a lot of the Violaceo di Verona cabbage - so beautiful and they just really glow! Tasty, too.They were also more bug resistant than the Brunswick cabbages.
Great information as usual. This time of year is tough, the heat is intense the humidity drives you inside and I am sick of watering. It’s rained on everyone but me this summer. But the fall garden is going to be amazing this year, I’m already planting.

Today I wanted to start treating a little piece of my backyard for fall gardening but I sprained my foot. 😭😭 I'm a complete newbie but if I don't start now, even if I do have some fails, I won't gain any experience. It's refreshing to find another person that has trouble growing red orach! I've had no problem with the green, but the red, it's so stubborn. You've got me excited to plant fall crops!

Summer wasn't very productive for me but I am hoping fall will be better. Being a newbie at this, I would like to know in future videos as we walk through your fall garden with you, when things are ready to harvest. I grew one summer squash but waited too long to harvest and it's skin was thick. Thanks for all your encouragement and support ❤🙏
Great video Jess! We only had 1 frost last year in Central Florida zone 9b. I'm not able to Grow too many veggies and herbs this fall and winter because were moving, but I have to plant something lol we can usually grow a lot all yr round except between June and September. I can't wait to start harvesting for the winter. I'll be planting tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, beans, lettuce and spinach for the fall through winter. We won't get the damaging cold weather until end of dec to January. Thanks for sharing as always! Can't wait to see the garden.
One advantage to living in the desert is root crops can be grown year round if you have the space. I planted my fall garden last week, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, bush beans, beets, leaf lettuce, yellow squash. My tomatoes are still producing so I only have one bed and a few pots to plant in. Sadly when I built my chicken moat I made a small garden area (it should be double the size at a minimum). Planning to put our little former Paradise up for sale by the end of next April due to encroachment of a 6.5 acre parcel being split into 4 properties and houses going in 😢🙅 I like people but I don't like people that much.
I didn’t get to do the summer garden due to the move but next weekend I’m gonna throw a couple seeds into the garden just so I can get my fix 😂. Thanks for another great video Jess! God bless 💕
A few weeks ago I had decided to give my garden a rest because the insect pressure has been so hard this year. I pushed some of my fall crops through the winter, and started my peas in November for winter and early spring harvest. What I found was that I had spider mites on my peas, that were growing up near a South facing wall, way back in February, and pulled the peas while they were still in active production because they were so heavily infested in early March. It's been rough ever since. Having said all of that, there are currently planting supplies on my dining table! A gardener must garden. I will avoid most of the crops that attract the mites... I hope.
We are living vicariously through you guys at the moment. We are currently trying to sell our house to buy another. So zero food gardens this year which has been sad. Theres always next year right lol?!
I started and planted red veined sorrel several years back and it has done really well in a shaded area. It's a harbinger of spring and the one of the first we harvest. It's wonderful addition to a food forest.
Hi jess ! I planted carrots in barrels ! It’s working out ! I also planted two different types of kale and spinach which hasn’t germinated yet. I’m waiting to plant my cabbage Till after my corn is done drying and my tomatoes are done producing .
I'm growing a lot of the same stuff. I love mache. It's one of my favorite salad greens. I'm going to try celtuce and orach. I tried both in the spring and neither did well. I've never been able to get carrots to grow either and I have a buuunch. I'm most excited about radishes and chard lol

i watch your videos and find them informative and enjoyable. I hope you read this,it's about planting a tomato plant with an egg: when then the roots break the the egg they will eventually get the calcium from the the egg shell and this will help avoid blossom end rot, from the yolk phosphorous that will increase fruit production and trace minerals. so keep it up, I hate it when people don't explain why to do you should do things. If you put a pinch of chewing tobacco under your tomato plant when you plant it , it will deter chewing bugs they don't like the flavor of the leaves. It does nothing to the flavor of the fruit only the leaves and the stem also does not hurt or deter the beneficial bugs ie lady bugs eat eat aphids not leaves, bees pollinate and don't eat the plant , apparently using tobacco this way is not as uncommon as you think.
My brussel sprouts (catskill) are about two foot high in 8 week and were started when our nights were averaging 5 deg c. I stared them on a heating mat with a basic LED desk lamp. I think you will be wildly succesful with proper lighting. Btw in SA corn salad is also known as Lamb's lettuce.

Love that collection of seeds, to late for fall planting up here, But that's 3b for you, Next year we are moving off the Mountain and currently looking for our homestead, building it from scratch in zone 4's unless we go to the Idaho border along I-90 that is the only zone 5 and 6 in Montana, and we are looking at that area as well. 8B here...it's hot and I can see why people don't want to be out in the garden. I go my cabbage,peas,beans,bell peppers and hot peppers in the garden...I have a few tomatoes have yet to put out there.

weve planted all the things in our fall garden and we arent having much success. I think our seeds are too old, because we have very little germination!!! But thankfully I dug out my old baker creek seed catalog and have a "wish list" for spring. We can always try again :)
Jess, I always worry about what to do when everything starts needing harvested at once! What do you do with it if you can't eat it before it goes bad?? How do you know hat to can etc?? THIS keeps me from growing anything beyond basic like green an and tomatoes!!
In MN, not -30 or lower until December.. january. But yes if you want to grow invest in a slightly heated greenhouse. We hit -60, 2 years ago.. oy!! Thats when ur doors can freeze shut. I love it!
I am always grateful for and inspired by your videos, thank you for this incredible information and advice for fall gardening. A part-time and small-time gardener, I am vowing to plant more basil and tomatoes next summer, as we love that, and they did so well. I did see and try the soil-bag idea for baby greens last fall and I think it would work ideally if I started it earlier, like now, after the 100 degree F heat, but not much later, (central/Piedmont area of N. C.).
Regarding places with really cold winters, check out Eliot Coleman. He's a pioneer in 4 season organic gardening and lives in Maine. He said that each layer of covering gives him 1.5 zones, so he has low tunnels inside of a bigger hoop house which allows him to grow cold hardy plants year round. It's pretty incredible!
I have noticed basil are biannual plants, mine have gone to seed and come back in the spring. I need to remember to collect the seeds but between work and my mom usually times flies by until it is to late. I usually find basil growing in pots i have not planted them in lol.

@@Debbiesnc I currently live in a rental house in Tuttle, OK. I usually buy a couple of basil plants too. I have discovered basil growing in with my iris & mint plants or an empty pot of soil the following year. All of my plants are in containers. Also I have notice the Thai basil doing the same.

Hello, I need inspiration today. I've been outside cleaning up the old, pulling weeds, planning on what should be put in now. I think I'll start some cherry tomatoes and Roma's. Our estimated first frost is later than yours, but I will be direct sowing them. I'm planning on planting the cold weather crops, too. I'll be just a couple weeks ahead of the recommended dates. We have a forest of Orach reseeded from last year. Probably have double to triple what we had last year. Going to seed now, but still some leaves to pick. We had three different kinds.

I grow a sweet daikon called Minowase or something. We even add a few of the younger leaves to salads.
For Carrots I love the little finger variety. They grow fast and they are so sweet. My fall garden has them planted now.

I am growing some fall crops this year for the first time! Thank you for your encouragement to use all the seasons available to us!

Never did it before, but thanks to Jess, MIGardener and Mark from Sufficient Me, o and not forgetting Charles Dowding, I am so in love with my fall and winter garden and everything is doing great. This is much better than having to wait for the next Spring. Thank you guys for helping us in the right direction.
Sometimes I have to do a double-take when you post your videos. Just this morning, I filmed my Wednesday video "What I'm Planting in my Fall Garden" LOL! Love your choices. When you roast daikon radishes, they taste like Brussels sprouts.

Took your advice from last year and am harvesting Parisian Pickling Cucumbers (making relish!) and almost 40 lbs of Abe Lincoln Tomatoes so far!

This year was bad all over with the wonky winter. This summer was the first we had to use frozen bottles for our bunnies and worst mosquitoes I've ever seen up here had to bring the bunnies in for a month and a half because the mosquitoes were really at them for that chunk of the spring.
Bugs definitely had a big win this year.

I'm the same way. I have not gotten much from my summer garden so I'm going crazy for fall. And I'm just so happy and excited. Gardening makes my soul smile.

Would love to hear sometimes what you make for supper, with all your produce. Tonight we had.a wonderful pasta sauce, 100% home grown ingredients, including the protein. The only thing I slacked off on was the pasta...that came from a pasta maker at the local farmers market.

I love to hear other gardeners that are like me.... and their seed boxes... and their hopes and dreams for the next season. I'm in a zone 8b to 9, depending on the year. Riverside County, CA, USA. I'm also planning on parsley, cilantro, dill, and bunching onions. A few fresh herbs added to the canned foods, or even a salad, can really make a difference. I'm glad you mentioned calendula, because I forgot those. I grow pansies and Johnny Jump Ups through Winter. Last Sept, I tried planting parsnips in 15 g. pots and they worked well. They harvested in Spring. You can have your brussel sprouts though. Chuckle. I'm guessing that Winter will be early this year; because our nights have been mild most of the Summer. So, I'm thinking I should plant a month earlier than I normally would, and be prepared to try fleece row covers. I discovered some sprouted potatoes in the garage and I'm experimenting with that as well in 25 g. black tree pots. Hoping there's enough time to get a harvest during the holiday season. We don't get as cold as you do though, rarely below freezing at night. I planted a 4'X6' area with carrots last week. I covered them with trash bags so the soil will stay moist until they sprout. For now, that planter has shade cloth as well, because the days are triple digit heat. Hoping it works, because, like you, we enjoy carrots. They're cheap in the stores, but if I don't have to shop, all the better. Keep up the good work... may God bless it all and prosper your family.

Still loving your gardening videos the most! I recently heard of a trap for squash and melon bugs that I will try this fall and again next Spring. Even at my age, I learn new things and like to try them out. This trap is sort of a decoy. You take some rinds/trimmings or damaged fruit off your melons and squash plants and put them in a shallow bowl or plate in the garden, covered with a paper plate, or a board or something to shade it and make it more attractive to the pests. In the mornings and afternoons you grab up that plate with the bugs and feed it to the chickens or drown the bugs in soapy water. Like I said, I haven't tried it yet, but will do so. Can't really hurt anything to try!
Noticed your shoe box file method of storing your seeds. I keep mine in those little binder-type things made to hold DVDs/CDs in the plastic pockets. I can then clearly see the envelope (if any) or my labels (printed off the internet with pics and reference info). I used to add little index tabs to help me organize by type, like Brassicas, Legumes, Melons, etc. Now I have so many seeds and varieties that I keep separate 'books' of most kinds and organize them alphabetically. They fit on shelves easily and I can keep them near my canned goods where the temps and darkness are best for them. Any seeds I plan to store for long-term are treated differently, but the ones I need ready access to for planning and planting are easy for me to find or peruse, and I have a lot less trouble with spilling open packets. I can even create a 'Using these seeds next' binder to carry out to the garden with me on planting day, complete with a copy of the garden plan and important dates/notes in a plastic page protector, and the plastic sleeves keep them dry. If you have a food saver, you can create your own pocketed pages by heat-sealing little pockets in heavy duty page protectors from the office supply store and putting them in a regular 3-ring binder.Just snip the tops of each pocket on one side for access.
I use a lot of my Autumn greens like kales, sorrell,and spinaches in my soups and stews, added torn in small pieces towards the end off the heat to just let them get wilted into the broth and fortify it with all those great vitamins. One of my favorite ways to use it, even if I had to freeze some for use deep into the winter.

I grew that purple cauliflower last winter and boy was that fantastic! I have just started some of those along with the green macerata. I also grew a lot of the Violaceo di Verona cabbage - so beautiful and they just really glow! Tasty, too.They were also more bug resistant than the Brunswick cabbages.
I have a Collard plant that is still growing from last years spring planting.
Great information as usual. This time of year is tough, the heat is intense the humidity drives you inside and I am sick of watering. It’s rained on everyone but me this summer. But the fall garden is going to be amazing this year, I’m already planting.

Summer wasn't very productive for me but I am hoping fall will be better. Being a newbie at this, I would like to know in future videos as we walk through your fall garden with you, when things are ready to harvest. I grew one summer squash but waited too long to harvest and it's skin was thick. Thanks for all your encouragement and support ❤🙏
Great video Jess! We only had 1 frost last year in Central Florida zone 9b. I'm not able to Grow too many veggies and herbs this fall and winter because were moving, but I have to plant something lol we can usually grow a lot all yr round except between June and September. I can't wait to start harvesting for the winter. I'll be planting tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, beans, lettuce and spinach for the fall through winter. We won't get the damaging cold weather until end of dec to January. Thanks for sharing as always! Can't wait to see the garden.
Have you ever tried growing kallettes....they grow on a stalk much like brussels sprouts. Growing them for the first time this year, quite neat!
I was inspired to grow NOW ..not next year. I ordered seeds and they finally came came in and have been sewn. Thank you!

One advantage to living in the desert is root crops can be grown year round if you have the space. I planted my fall garden last week, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, bush beans, beets, leaf lettuce, yellow squash. My tomatoes are still producing so I only have one bed and a few pots to plant in. Sadly when I built my chicken moat I made a small garden area (it should be double the size at a minimum). Planning to put our little former Paradise up for sale by the end of next April due to encroachment of a 6.5 acre parcel being split into 4 properties and houses going in 😢🙅

A few weeks ago I had decided to give my garden a rest because the insect pressure has been so hard this year. I pushed some of my fall crops through the winter, and started my peas in November for winter and early spring harvest. What I found was that I had spider mites on my peas, that were growing up near a South facing wall, way back in February, and pulled the peas while they were still in active production because they were so heavily infested in early March. It's been rough ever since.
Having said all of that, there are currently planting supplies on my dining table! A gardener must garden. I will avoid most of the crops that attract the mites... I hope.

We are living vicariously through you guys at the moment. We are currently trying to sell our house to buy another. So zero food gardens this year which has been sad. Theres always next year right lol?!

I started and planted red veined sorrel several years back and it has done really well in a shaded area. It's a harbinger of spring and the one of the first we harvest. It's wonderful addition to a food forest.
Hi jess ! I planted carrots in barrels ! It’s working out ! I also planted two different types of kale and spinach which hasn’t germinated yet. I’m waiting to plant my cabbage Till after my corn is done drying and my tomatoes are done producing .

I'm growing a lot of the same stuff. I love mache. It's one of my favorite salad greens. I'm going to try celtuce and orach. I tried both in the spring and neither did well. I've never been able to get carrots to grow either and I have a buuunch. I'm most excited about radishes and chard lol

i watch your videos and find them informative and enjoyable. I hope you read this,it's about planting a tomato plant with an egg: when then the roots break the the egg they will eventually get the calcium from the the egg shell and this will help avoid blossom end rot, from the yolk phosphorous that will increase fruit production and trace minerals. so keep it up, I hate it when people don't explain why to do you should do things. If you put a pinch of chewing tobacco under your tomato plant when you plant it , it will deter chewing bugs they don't like the flavor of the leaves. It does nothing to the flavor of the fruit only the leaves and the stem also does not hurt or deter the beneficial bugs ie lady bugs eat eat aphids not leaves, bees pollinate and don't eat the plant , apparently using tobacco this way is not as uncommon as you think.
My brussel sprouts (catskill) are about two foot high in 8 week and were started when our nights were averaging 5 deg c. I stared them on a heating mat with a basic LED desk lamp. I think you will be wildly succesful with proper lighting. Btw in SA corn salad is also known as Lamb's lettuce.

Love that collection of seeds, to late for fall planting up here, But that's 3b for you, Next year we are moving off the Mountain and currently looking for our homestead, building it from scratch in zone 4's unless we go to the Idaho border along I-90 that is the only zone 5 and 6 in Montana, and we are looking at that area as well. 8B here...it's hot and I can see why people don't want to be out in the garden. I go my cabbage,peas,beans,bell peppers and hot peppers in the garden...I have a few tomatoes have yet to put out there.

weve planted all the things in our fall garden and we arent having much success. I think our seeds are too old, because we have very little germination!!! But thankfully I dug out my old baker creek seed catalog and have a "wish list" for spring. We can always try again :)

Jess, I always worry about what to do when everything starts needing harvested at once! What do you do with it if you can't eat it before it goes bad?? How do you know hat to can etc?? THIS keeps me from growing anything beyond basic like green an and tomatoes!!

In MN, not -30 or lower until December.. january. But yes if you want to grow invest in a slightly heated greenhouse. We hit -60, 2 years ago.. oy!! Thats when ur doors can freeze shut. I love it!
I am always grateful for and inspired by your videos, thank you for this incredible information and advice for fall gardening. A part-time and small-time gardener, I am vowing to plant more basil and tomatoes next summer, as we love that, and they did so well. I did see and try the soil-bag idea for baby greens last fall and I think it would work ideally if I started it earlier, like now, after the 100 degree F heat, but not much later, (central/Piedmont area of N. C.).
Regarding places with really cold winters, check out Eliot Coleman. He's a pioneer in 4 season organic gardening and lives in Maine. He said that each layer of covering gives him 1.5 zones, so he has low tunnels inside of a bigger hoop house which allows him to grow cold hardy plants year round. It's pretty incredible!

I could be wrong, but I think orach is a summer crop. I know that it at least tolerates extreme heat.

I have noticed basil are biannual plants, mine have gone to seed and come back in the spring. I need to remember to collect the seeds but between work and my mom usually times flies by until it is to late. I usually find basil growing in pots i have not planted them in lol.

@@Debbiesnc I currently live in a rental house in Tuttle, OK. I usually buy a couple of basil plants too. I have discovered basil growing in with my iris & mint plants or an empty pot of soil the following year. All of my plants are in containers. Also I have notice the Thai basil doing the same.
I planted kale, lettuce, radishes and they all sprouted within two days! It's really hot still but they're in the shade so hopefully they make it...

Hello, I need inspiration today. I've been outside cleaning up the old, pulling weeds, planning on what should be put in now. I think I'll start some cherry tomatoes and Roma's. Our estimated first frost is later than yours, but I will be direct sowing them. I'm planning on planting the cold weather crops, too. I'll be just a couple weeks ahead of the recommended dates. We have a forest of Orach reseeded from last year. Probably have double to triple what we had last year. Going to seed now, but still some leaves to pick. We had three different kinds.
