The very first, the SL-1, had a geodesic ("basket-weave," like the fuselage framework of the RAF's Wellington bomber) framework, and later ones used ring-and-longitudinal girder frameworks like the Zeppelins.

My family is Spiess (I don't know about the link to Joseph, though it could be..) it is a German name, but my ancestors were from Germany/Bohemia, later France, then went to Bohemia again (Czechoslovakia at that time)..
