I hope Vice could have emphasized that those atrocities were only true to some areas in the Southern Philippines. I am a Filipino and this things were shocking even for me. They're making it look like it's completely normal for us to see these things when in truth, we're just as shocked as anyone.
This issue really hits close to home for me. In 2017, (i was 13 at the time) I went to the Philippines to visit family with my mom and little brother. We stayed at my mother's village for 2 weeks. 2 days before we were supposed to go back to the U.S, my uncle (who was the leader of the village, and was running for mayor of the main city) was assassinated. I remember coming back from the village church in a red dress, sitting down on a bench, facing the fan watching Peppa Pig. I was on my phone, the clock was around 9:15. Around that time, a man with a black mask, sunglasses and red jacket came inside our family's home. Though i found it unusual, i just let it go since everyone in the village knew one another and 80% of the people living there were relatives of mine, so just assumed he wasn't someone dangerous. I stepped out of the house shortly to get something, and came back, but as i walked through the narrow gateway that same man came out. i was shoulder to shoulder to this man, just inches away from my uncles killer. later i sat back down, and moments later i heard 3 pops outside. i thought they were just fireworks. they were not. after hearing the most bloodcurdling scream, and others screaming and running, i ran out as well and saw my mom standing along with almost 60 other folks who ran and drove over to see what happened, i ran to my mother and saw her crying i looked up ahead and saw my uncle being dragged and carried out of the house limp with his blood all over the floor, a broken mirror, to a van where he could be driven 30 minutes away to the nearest hospital. I can never forget how hard i cried while i was hiding behind my mothers back. Injustice, pure injustice. My uncle was not corrupt. He took in kids with unfortunate backgrounds, poor teens struggling to get an education, and hosted the weak, while treating them like family. i never knew that they weren't related to me until i was told. that's how welcomed he and my relatives made them feel. My uncle was wrongfully killed, a kind man with a kind heart, and a reliable leader. At his funeral, more than 400 people came to show their condolences. While we walked to the graveyard i looked behind me and saw people flooding the street wearing white tee shirts and flowers in hand. Seeing how many people looked up to him, trusted him, and loved him makes me feel good. But to have such a good soul taken away so quickly makes me feel terrible. I am just one of many others who have been affected by political corruption in the Philippines. I pray that this practice will stop and that corrupt leaders will finally realize that greed and power will lead them to a dark end. Thank you Vice for covering this topic, i wish i could have seen this sooner.

I hope Vice could have emphasized that those atrocities were only true to some areas in the Southern Philippines. I am a Filipino and this things were shocking even for me. They're making it look like it's completely normal for us to see these things when in truth, we're just as shocked as anyone.

This issue really hits close to home for me. In 2017, (i was 13 at the time) I went to the Philippines to visit family with my mom and little brother. We stayed at my mother's village for 2 weeks. 2 days before we were supposed to go back to the U.S, my uncle (who was the leader of the village, and was running for mayor of the main city) was assassinated. I remember coming back from the village church in a red dress, sitting down on a bench, facing the fan watching Peppa Pig. I was on my phone, the clock was around 9:15. Around that time, a man with a black mask, sunglasses and red jacket came inside our family's home. Though i found it unusual, i just let it go since everyone in the village knew one another and 80% of the people living there were relatives of mine, so just assumed he wasn't someone dangerous. I stepped out of the house shortly to get something, and came back, but as i walked through the narrow gateway that same man came out. i was shoulder to shoulder to this man, just inches away from my uncles killer. later i sat back down, and moments later i heard 3 pops outside. i thought they were just fireworks. they were not. after hearing the most bloodcurdling scream, and others screaming and running, i ran out as well and saw my mom standing along with almost 60 other folks who ran and drove over to see what happened, i ran to my mother and saw her crying i looked up ahead and saw my uncle being dragged and carried out of the house limp with his blood all over the floor, a broken mirror, to a van where he could be driven 30 minutes away to the nearest hospital. I can never forget how hard i cried while i was hiding behind my mothers back. Injustice, pure injustice. My uncle was not corrupt. He took in kids with unfortunate backgrounds, poor teens struggling to get an education, and hosted the weak, while treating them like family. i never knew that they weren't related to me until i was told. that's how welcomed he and my relatives made them feel. My uncle was wrongfully killed, a kind man with a kind heart, and a reliable leader. At his funeral, more than 400 people came to show their condolences. While we walked to the graveyard i looked behind me and saw people flooding the street wearing white tee shirts and flowers in hand. Seeing how many people looked up to him, trusted him, and loved him makes me feel good. But to have such a good soul taken away so quickly makes me feel terrible. I am just one of many others who have been affected by political corruption in the Philippines. I pray that this practice will stop and that corrupt leaders will finally realize that greed and power will lead them to a dark end. Thank you Vice for covering this topic, i wish i could have seen this sooner.
