    I am from Canada. If I lived in America I would have died when I got cancer instead I got surgery and radiation for free.

      It's funny... many that get cancer in Canada come to the U.S. to get cured. I wonder why? The quality of universal healthcare goes downhill after a while... months of waiting in a long line.

    • @Cameron-hu6hg
      @Cameron-hu6hg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +SokemRokemRobot I think it's something around 80% of canadians that receive documented care in the US is for emergent services, not even because they wanted to, just because they couldn't make it back to canada for free healthcare in time. The figure for 40/50 K leaving the country for 1, is VERY small compared to the amount that leave the us (In the millions), secondly, it doesn't account for US care, it accounts for care outside of canada, which can mean anywhere, and third, the most highly cited 'research' on canadians leaving/going to the US for care 'in droves' doesn't even ask patients or american doctors, it simply asks a relatively small group of CANADIAN doctors what they THINK their patients do, getting a percentage, and applying that percentage to the Canadian population and converting that to real numbers, which leaves around 40-50K leaving per year. *one more thing* the data is decades old.

      Here's my question then. Would someone be better off waiting months for health care or getting no care because they couldn't afford it?

    • @bendover04me
      @bendover04me 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      not true. reasons why few canadians are part of statistics receiving care in the US 1) they were in the US and cant get back in time to canada due to extenuating circumstances 2) few diagnostics and treatments are currently unavailable in Canada ie: ( tests or treatments that are experimental or pending health canada approval) 3) few canadians cant wait. CANCER is a big word. some cancers are manageable but when people hear the word they panic. it's a case to case basis.
      regarding wait times, tests and treatments are managed according to urgency and outcome. when you really need it youll get it right away hence the wait times. prioritization is the key.

      Horse Head. We Canadians make an appointment to see a doctor like anyone else. It may interest you to know that wait times for Americans in their medical system are 10 per cent longer than Canadian wait times in our medical system, and no one is screened out because they can't pay. By international standards our medical care is ranked higher than that received by Americans in their system. We have more nurses per person than Americans do, while at the same time our expenditure per capita for health care is half of what Americans spend. We outlive Americans, on average by almost three years, 81 to 78.6 years. We have more hospital beds per person than Americans do. Our rate of deaths from from heart disease is much lower than that of Americans. Death rates of children in childbirth are 75 per cent higher in the United States than in Canada. You should also know American children under five years of age die 28 per cent more often than Canadian children. The stories we hear from out of the United States on the health care system there are simply appalling.

    • @seamusin1697
      @seamusin1697 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      George's Opinion Actually, PBS, MSNBC, and CNN are covering it. CNN and MSNBC both interviewed Senator Cassidy this morning and mentioned Jimmy Kimmel as well.
      In fairness, this bill was rushed via a closed door process in only a few days after Democrats had already been discussing amendments to and improvements for the Affordable Care Act with members of congress like Senator Lamar Alexander (R) and other Republicans who, at least initially, seemed amenable to working in a bipartisan fashion together after the failure of their last bill on the Senate floor. This is nothing more than an attempt by the Trump administration and Republicans to ram through a repeal and replace bill without even a Congressional Budget Office score attached to it to allow average Americans to see what it's costs will be and how much they stand to lose in terms of coverage if it passes and becomes law. In short, from what little has been presented thus far, the Cassidy-Graham amendment will result in block grant funding to states and more power and discretion for private insurance providers.

      The ACA is not perfect, but it saves lives. People who otherwise were unable to obtain coverage are getting healthcare under the ACA. Fixing the ACA should be a priority, but the GOP Congress and Trump are sabotaging it every step of the way. Universal health care (not necessarily single-payer) should be the long-term goal. Can the ACA take us to universal healthcare? Probably, if there is a bipartisan effort to do so. Some estimates put the figures at an additional 9% income tax, and 11% payroll taxes as necessary to fund universal healthcare in the USA. Providing universal healthcare for a citizenry is not "socialism" but good governance and good business sense, not to mention, as human beings, we are supposed to take care of each other. We already have a military that is the paragon of socialism. We paid for highways, and roads, and other infrastructure as a developed economy should. Universal healthcare is no more socialistic than mandating auto insurance for all drivers.

      I am America but grew up in Canada, from when I was 2 to 16 years old. My grandmother, legal guardian and step brother died because socialized medicine killed them. They weren't wealthy enough to come to America for ( cancer treatment, liver transplant or Alzheimer's ). Medicine was "free" (30% federal government tax GST & 15 % state tax PST). There is this thing called rationing healthcare where it's. First come first serve health. There isn't enough money to compensate doctors for treating patients thus forcing backups in the system.
      This system does not work and there is a reason well off foreigners come to America for healthcare. If they can pay more, they go to the front of the line.

      Interesting to see a video on public policy getting a significant number of intelligent, sincere comments on TH-cam.
      The fluffy, meaningless video clip of Colbert's opening for the Emmys, however, gets a huge number of remarkably similar complaints about Hollywood liberals and The Left not understanding real Americans and not "making America great" or whatever. It reeked of an organized effort from online "activists," but it was strangely pointless.

Even Australian current affair programs fly over to America to interview people because they're so gobsmacked that a first world country could treat it's citizens so poorly. Based on your complete lack of a cohesive argument, I'm guessing you're not a journalist or a healthcare professional - just another disgruntled voice on the internet who puts party before country.

    • @Cameron-hu6hg
      @Cameron-hu6hg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +bulldogsbob it's not nearly as bad for someone making hundreds of thousands a year or more, and if you're a family of 4 making $75,000, you can get by pretty okay. If you're blessed with good genes and won't experience significant medical problems until they're past age 65 when you're eligible for medicare, then you're also okay. If you're an average american, one that uses medical services at LEAST once per year (not including general doctor visits) you have no money to spend at the end of the year on anything but the basics and maybe a few cell phones and a nice dinner or two for birthdays/etc, and if you're the average american, you're paying between $5000 and $10,000 a year on health care costs for your family (between premiums, copays, deductibles and out of pocket costs, and your employer is paying between $10,000 and $20,000 on top of that for the rest of your health premium.
      Most people focus on the health care side of it, with people lacking insurance and hundreds of thousands going bankrupt each year because of medical bills, but we also should focus on the economic benefits and the immense savings for businesses, individuals, and families if we had universal single payer health insurance.

    Canadians care about each other - our health care is provided to EVERYONE and paid by our tax dollars. We can go to any doctor we wish. Serious cases are given priority, but wait times for non-serious cases are minimal. I can phone and see my doctor the same day. Health care is essential for every citizen and should not be a profit motivated commodity, like cigarettes. Work and products are profit motivated. Good health should not be.

    • @slashismyhommie8182

      Wayne Maxwell it's a crime against humanity that conservatives in the U.S. keep pulling up wait times in Canada like people with life or death situations have to wait months, and that just isn't the case. I know this because of so many PS4 players on my friends list have shot down ignorant people who believe what they hear on news media by pundits who obviously are pushing a false agenda. Then there's also the "all the insurance jobs will be lost" health of citizens who pay taxes should come first in society. It's sickening to me to think that the pay for healthcare idea is even a talking point. For profit business is good for making products, not providing basic services to the public.I live in Los Angeles where we have the worst public transit system which received taxpayer funding year in and year out as well as public funds for any project they want, and it is a for profit private entity. It is a prime example alongside health care why a private for profit entity doesn't truly provide a "better product" to the tax paying consumers

    Thank you so much for speaking up. I have a 13 year old who has basically been on life support since day 1 due to his GI tract not functioning properly. This will devastate his Medicaid funding both his disability Medicaid and his Medicaid waiver. I won't be able to find affordable private insurance for him. He will without a doubt have multiple pre-existing conditions under this new bill. I estimate his medical bills this year to be over $300,000. This is just one year he has always needed a high level of care; his medical supplies alone exceed $20,000 a year. If this bill passes, I may very well have to institutionalize him because I will be left with no other affordable options. I definitely couldn't pay jacked up premiums nor would I be able to cover his expenses out of pocket. They intend to defund Medicaid slowly with this bill until Medicaid coverage is basically worth nothing.

    • @TeddyKrimsony
      @TeddyKrimsony 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      so other people has to pay $300,000 every year to keep 1 person alive who's not contributing anything to the economy. As heartless this is I think he and everyone else would be better if he didn't make it past day 1. sorry, but natural selection is crucial for evolution.

      People shouldn't have to choose between paying a ridiculous amount of money for healthcare or dying from a treatable injury/disease because they can't afford healthcare.

      No it isn't treatable. He is disabled and has a Medicaid Waiver. The state has acknowledge he needs nursing level care that would result in institutionalization, thus the waiver.

    If there's one thing I'm happy about in my country in Europe is health care. I'll gladly pay taxes to give everyone quality medical care, it's the one thing everyone needs (and also education). If you're poor, you'll get help (affordable too), same if you're rich (but since you're rich you're free to buy the care you want anyway). Americans need to start calling these things out.

      will be my end Because we will get into more debt. The fact that we may have to pay more taxes. Obamacare isn't even working, Medicaid for all will not even work. A utopian healthcare system has never existed without it's faults.
      If we say, implement single payer healthcare system (Medicaid for all) in California, did you know the cost exceeds the budget?

      Cute. A short tutorial for you:
      In the VERY unlikely event that Obamacare is overturned, guys like YOU will get diddly-squat when it comes to healthcare coverage. So, I hope you're wealthy. Otherwise, when you're ill, your only option may be a trip to the emergency room, which MY tax dollars pay for. As a voter, I'm working to change that. In this life, I don't believe in free rides. I don't want to pay for your free healthcare. So.... my advice to you -- stay healthy.

      I guess it comes down to priorities - Health and humanity or wealth and warfare.
      I'm lucky, where I live no-one gets a bill for going to an emergency room, riding in an ambulance, visiting a GP or having a baby. My taxes go towards supporting other people when they need healthcare and they in-turn support me. It's the benefit of being part of a civil society.
