FANTASTIC! I've owned an 01/W FD since the mid 90s, my first real synth. Only recently have i come to appreciate synthesis beyond 'bread & butter' samples, sadly just in time for mine to die. Ugh. Two decades ago I'd managed to produce some incredible Rhodes, wurlitzer, Hammond/Leslies, bass, guitar, & sound effects I've not heard anywhere else. I can't wait to share some day. I'll just have to buy another unit now. Ugh.
The most powerful Workstation from Korg imho! I'm a big fan of 80s & 90s Korg Workstations! They ooze character and personality in both design and sound!
Not even remotely close to most powerful, (and it was the 01 which made me a Korg fan)... Every generation since has built on the original M1 PCM engine, with the 01 being only the 3rd generation of a line that now stretches to... eight generations in total I believe...
@@looneyburgmusic Got any recommendations for any newer-ish Korgs with a similar character when it comes to Pads as this one? Big fan of sounds like Dreamwave and animotion etc. I like the sparkly moving high end.
Love that choir pad around 1:42! I have the Wavestate and it does have all the Wavestation waves/drum kits and more. It can sound really phat/wide and other patches/samples can sound very flat and almost one dimensional. I also have the Wavestation VST and it still sounds different than the Wavestate, I mean on the same waves/samples. Of course, hardware sounds different than software. Thanks for sharing!
03:32 Ether Bells was my one of favorite sample sound from arranger Korg i3(1993) . This sample in combination with choir sample was called Brightness (B 55 General MIDI patch from Korg i3 banks). I found last year this sample in Korg Wavestation (VSTi). But this time I hear for first time that sample is coming from Korg 01/Rack
I am just about to buy a Kawai K4 and a Korg 01/FWD - for drone ambient/evolving pads, which will run thru fx pedals. Should I look maybe elsewhere in the synth world? :)
Mine had Gary Barlow as it's last owner! Even so now I've been forced to downsize to a flat & am trying to decide whether it's a priority synth enough to justify keeping it in the flat along side other definite priorities like my D550, Triton rack, M1R, JV2080, Morpheus, TX816, FS1R & many more, or keep it in storage nearby???
Easy answer. You don't sell synths = storage 🤗 Among the ones above.. It would be down to this, the M1r ot the triton. Probably the M1 as this contains most of it and the triton doesn't do this.. 🤔
Cheers... the next one on my List (01/W).... gotten flashed by the waveshaping... Everyone wants the mainstream forced Rolands... I like the underrated ones
Thank you for your video. I wonder if you could help me understand how I can set up the Korg 01R/W with a Roland A-80 Midi Keyboard controller with a Focusrite sound module and working with logic pro on a Mac. I would greatly appreciate it. If you could tell me what the Midi inputs and outputs should be from what to what, to make this work. Nobody has been able so far to help me. Everybody talks about USB but I'm stuck with Midi. Thank you so much in advance for your help.
Most characterful rompler I have heard. What a concept, true synthesizer part that allows for some programming of non-realistic sounds. Was it an answer to the SY series or an own attempt to break out from the full realism that the M1 offered?
Well Roland had ringmod on the D50 and Yamaha had AWM into AFM as you mentioned so I think Korg where a little late on ball with "Pcm shaping". But it is a really nice feature which also where left out on later romplers...
Enginewise they are different. The 01/w has that crossmod thing going otherwise they are similar in sound. If you don't need the trix of the wavestaion just have 01/w. I don't see a big need other wise to own both. So overlap in sound but not in features. So depends on your use.
Completely different multisamples and synth engine....I don't feel there's much overlap, the 01 is pretty unique. The SR does share the same pcm cards(some) as the 01/W series.
Hi. In my opinion they are extremely different machines. The Korg Is a complete workstation, has effects on board, has samples on Rom, has the waveshaping option and can merge different sounds. It Is the successor of M1, and we say that the Holy Trinity of the '80s Is M1, DX7 and Roland D50. Just to Imagine how different are these classy synths and how complete each other. DX7 Is very good. Maybe only two sounds may be layered. And You need an external effect. But It Is a good original machine! EDIT: I now am listening to the waveshaping option. Yes, It sounds very close to Dx7 FM synthesis in many examples! So It could be and interesting option to purchase the Korg!
Waveshaping was more or less forgotten because just like Yamaha's RCM feature on the SY77/99 it's really not that useful. Or, at least, not useful enough to be worth the bother of programming patches which use Waveshaping...
