Mm I want dat purple stuff. P.S. That point you made about patience is fairly on-point, but what I've done instead of having patience is substitute the classic "buffs are for fast weapons" - which was absolutely the case in DS1 - for "buffs are for hyper armour weapons" motto. Especially in an invasion setting, the most important things for a buff build is the ability to be aggressive and to finish all of your combos, uninterrupted.
I think you could play that both ways to an extremely effective extent, though something like a Fume can still be reaction-rolled as easily with the buff as without, at least during a 1v1 setting when there are no overconfident gankers or idiotic blues charging headfirst into a 1000-ton truck on a stick. Of course, Darkmoon Blade on a Fume is more about making a statement to players than actually being a good build. It's the kind of thing you want to show up in to make players go "oh fuck me" (and then ideally you grant them their wish)

Dark Souls remembers. Fun informational video and entertaining as always. Never took a buff build for a spin in this game, too concerned about the thing wearing off and my damage going to shit.
Even just regular estus punishment is a lot harder in 3. I remember in 2 my go-to was sunlight spear for punishing Bad Dragons that tried healing on the bridge (or halberd beyblades), since it was basically a guaranteed kill if you could actually land one, and you didn't even need to outdamage the estus if you dealt the damage before they got the full heal, since healing wasn't instant. Now heavy spells won't cast in time to hit a player before they can roll after using estus even with 50 DEX, and even if they did, they're weaker, caster hybrids are worse overall and you probably wouldn't outdamage the estus most of the time. Punishing estus just feels like a Sisyphean ordeal in 3, even this method of using a buffed true combo to make sure you outdamage the heal means keeping a short-duration buff up and ready. Still, it's cathartic and nostalgic to see basically a montage of estus punishes, so props for that!
So I was on edge with this opinion at first, but at the part with the 2 Cathedral Knights and the priest that buffs & heals them PROVES invaders were intentionally designed to be considered additional mob enemy as NPCs can not only buff the Invader but heal them too just like the general NPC enemies.
The classic Obobobo build is OP at level 34ish. Fachion has a high base damage, so it's great with a raw infusion. Lighting urns do massive damage at those levels too. -Brought to you by 2017 Dark Souls 3.
Since you're getting into curved swords, I recommend trying out the rotten ghru curved sword. It's shorter than most curved swords, but the stamina cost is super low. Phenomenal pressure on hosts/phantoms, I usually just roll-catch them indefinitely. Super fun to pair with its dagger counterpart, poison infused as well. (dagger main hand, curved sword off-hand for parries/two-hand)
The cold weather reminds me of a long time ago when I was good at invasions in Dark Souls III, so I thank Miyazaki for the final nerf: password matchmaking
Let me let you in on a little secret for low Str builds: the Follower's Shield. Only 85% physical block, but it has incredible stability and low weight. And people think it's a weaker shield than it actually is, so they get hella aggressive trying to spam into it.
I use a dark falchion with my high level. Love it even if i die a lot because there is no room for fun at that level. I love sl 50-80 because even a non twink has fair chances of beating twinks if leveled right. My alltime favourite weapons are the mace, the bastard sword and the falchion (all equipped with that dlc oakwood shield with the regen on it) the bastard sword may not be as long as the claymore and you hardly hit anything with the r2's but its good for ultra weapons. The weaponart gives you just enough hyperarmor to tank though 2 r1's and punish a spam. When buffed or chaotic infused it does fairly enough damage to erase half their health. The falchion to quickly run in and retreat after you hit them in their spam and the mace... basically for everything else. Poise, rollcatch hell, trades, guardbreaks, to water your plants... It only has 3 weaknesses: 1: backstabs on the 3rd r1 or perceverance so dont spam it on a good player 2: players with actually decent parry skills (rare but they do exist) 3: quick weapons like poke-sticks. In all these cases just switch to bastard sword

I know you talk about punishing estus with your damage output, but it seems like there are times when the host or phantom backs off to heal, and you might throw a Lightning Urn and tag them. What about Undead Hunter Charms? Seems like getting a few R1s in, then hitting them with the charm as they back off would be totally demoralizing
I like Hunter charms on some builds, but not all. They send people running a lot of times. With this build, I'll maybe throw one at the start of the fight, but when they get low on health, I want them to go for the heal.
Talking about using a shield on this build to get close, does the 1 handed R2 still combo into WA? If so, using a WA shield would be great, since you get the benefit of the range of the 1 handed moveset
That first steam invasion was confusing. Like, why did the gold randomly choose to follow you, alone, with a terrible shield and little stamina as a very bad turtle when you were on next to full health? Why was the host fatrolling and trying to circle around you? I'm convinced they thought you were an NPC somehow. The gold at least expected you to hit his shield once then just stop.
Oro, this may sound like a dumb question, but how exactly do you get Darkmoon Blade? I tried making a buff build and I've put 50 hours into here, around 25 of which are waiting to be summoned for the concords, and I was only summoned about 11 times in that period. Is there a particular SL sweetspot or is it because I'm on PC?
This isn't Oro's YT channel. With the low number of new players using Way of Blue nowadays, fastest way to grind DMB is farming the silver knights for concords at Anor Londo bonfire.
His whole schtick here is just applying pressure and then punishing them when they do something with commitment that leaves a safe opening to attack them (healing), so reach is a much smaller factor than damage. When you're building around punishing estus use, there are really only two factors to consider: How fast your highest burst damage (defined as damage in a single hit or inescapable (or "true") combo) can come out, and how much damage it deals. Factors like reach, accuracy, hitboxes, etc go out the window, which is why in past games heavy duty spells like wog, sunlight spear, CSS etc were so good for estus punishment (when normally they were very easy to just dodge- Can't just roll through while you're healing). Reach is for spacing, which you don't need to just get a few hits in here and there- In fact, if you're confident and always at least trade, you can trade on every single hit with something like this and still win since a win is a win even at low health, and you win as soon as they go to heal.
