Really interesting to learn about compost pack barns. Look great for cows and people.

Do you find the ripper more effective then a roto-tiller would be? Do you have specific moisture content and temperature you are trying to reach?

Where do cows go when you are remowing compost?
How is it with high moisture and foggy weather

The cattle are moved into a large alley adjacent to the feeding trough as new shavings are added and the tractor works the pack with the small cultivator. As you can imagine, this becomes very routine for the cattle as it occurs twice a day every day, and the cattle soon learn the drill and when the herdsman starts to rustle the first tip gate the cattle get up and move off the pack and towards the loafing alley. Parts of this process can be seen more clearly in our second pack barn video: th-cam.com/video/NBwXcdF1wxo/w-d-xo.html
The process of adding more shavings and a couple passes with the cultivator through the pack take only a about 15 minutes, and no one gets very disturbed.
Moisture control is one of the most important management factors in bedded pack barns, saw dust is generally the material of choice in Ontario Bedded pack barns, as a carbon source and water absorbent, better than, drywall scraps, chopped straw or chips. Also large ceiling fans run almost all the time to keep the cattle comfortable and move moisture into the air for removal by air currents. The farmers admits that humid, cool fall weather and very cold weather, both present challenges in fog removal at times, but they like their systems very much for cow comfort and management.

I'm completely happy that the cows are healthy and happy and that they have an improved lifestyle but how is it a good lifestyle for cows that are never outside that seems really odd
