  • This is a remastered version of one of our most popular podcast episodes so far. If you've previously listened to episode 6, the original version of this, there's no difference save for the much improved audio quality this time around.
In episode 6 I get to put forward your questions and the most common critiques of Sri Dasam Granth to Dr. Kamalroop Singh who has completed a PhD at the University of Birmingham, School of Philosophy, Theology and Religions. His thesis was titled, “Dasam Granth Re-examined.”
In addition, he has published two books on Sri Dasam Granth Sahib, “Sri Dasam Granth: Q&A” as well as “The Granth of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Essays, Lectures and Translations. We spend the first ten minutes, as always, getting to know our guest a little bit better, starting with his upbringing, the influence of his Bibi Ji, his own personal identity crisis and academic pursuits leading to and through his PhD in Sri Dasam Granth Sahib.
We then dive into Sri Dasam Granth Sahib and the ‘so-called’ controversy surrounding it. We start with the following extracts:Saturday, 4th April 1846 - Illustrated London News - “Guru Govind inculcated his tenets upon his followers by his preaching, his actions, and his works; among the latter is ‘Dasama Padshah Ka Gurunth,’ or Book of the Tenth King, he being the tenth ruler from Nanc, the founder of the religion.
This work, together with the ‘Adi Gurunth’ of Nanac - their only other sacred book - is held in great veneration by the Sikhs.”Here is another extract, although not included in the podcast: "Sir John Malcolm, while in the Punjaub in 1805, succeeded in procuring a copy of the ‘Adi Gurunth’ from a Chief, who sent it to him at night, after having obtained a promise that he would treat the scared volume with great respect. A Mr. Colebrook, with persevering assiduity, was also able to procure not only the ‘Adi-Gurunth,’ but the ‘Dasama Padshah Ka Gurunth’ - the two most scared books of the Sikhs.”
Below is a breakdown of the questions:
00:00 - Family history, upbringing and Sri Dasam Granth
10:50 - What is Sri Dasam Granth?
12:56 - Was Sri Dasam Granth written by Guru Gobind Singh Ji or could it include the work of court poets or others? Who do the pen names Ram & Shyam refer to? In the process of answering this Dr. Kamalroop Singh outlines a raft of early Dasam Granth manuscripts starting in 1688 and uses further historical evidence to remove any possibility of court poet material being used.
18:50 - Why do some of the earliest manuscripts have compositions ordered in a different order or exclude certain compositions completely?
26:20 - We dive deeper into the history of the Bhai Mani Singh recension of Adi Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji & Sri Dasam Granth Sahib Ji.
30:50 - Parralel parkash of Adi Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji & Sri Dasam Granth Sahib Ji.40:06 - What is Charitropakhyan
    44:38 - Is Charitropakhyan misogynistic?
47:00 - Does Sri Dasam Granth lack originality due to its inclusion of puranic texts? How is Sri Dasam Granth part of the social revolution of the Khalsa?
51:10 - What does Maharaj mean when he states he comes from the khastriya lineage? Is this a declaration of caste?
53:17 - What was the influence of Colonialism and the Singh Sabha upon Sri Dasam Granth Sahib?
1:01:19 - How does the concept of the female divine energy fit into wider Sikh thought?
    1:03:00 - Is there a Sikh theology?
1:12:40 - How do you explain the story of Guru Gobind Singh ji and Naina Devi Yagna found in Bansavalinama by Kesar Singh Chibber?
1:17:16 - What is the relationship between reformists such as the Bandai Khalsa and Teja Singh Bhasauria with Sri Dasam Granth?
    1:22:00 - Bandai Khalsa & contemporary records
1:28:00 - Will Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ever be parkash at Akal Takht?
1:32:30 - How does Jhatka & Dheg fit into Sikhi?

eyes mind opened by excellent warrior dr Kamalroop, listen learn so much, need more. thank you for helping decolnise my mind. truly believe start of something big, revealing deliberate buried truths by colonised singh Sabha, massive distortion in sikhi . Sadly colonised Sikh ism is now entrenched . more lectures how so self styled Sikh leaders conspired with British to create colonised current Sikhism , falsehoods will be blown away soon by these warriors of truth.

Sikhs acknowledging the Dasam Granth does not make sense. To avoid any controversy, it’s best to focus on only the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. If Guru Gobind Singh Ji wanted the Sikhs to follow his writings (Shabad), then he would have included it into the SGGS. It’s not humility to create confusion and Guru Arjan ji included his bani when compiling the Adi Granth. Let’s follow Guru’s HUKAM to follow only SGGS.

Okay in that case please let me know where Jaap Sahib, Chaupai Sahib, Ardas, Akaal Ustat and Zafarnama just to name a few all come from...
Also historically your comment doesn't make sense, Guru Arjun Dev Ji compiled the Adi Granth almost 60 years before Guru Gobind Singh Ji was born. Not to forget all pre-colonial literature give utmost satkar to the Sri Dasam Granth.

@@RamblingsofaSikh My point was that Guru Gobind Singh Ji added his father’s Bani to the SGGS, while not adding his own. I have heard that the 10th Guru did not add his own writings to SGGS out of humility. That does not make sense since Guru Arjan ji added his bani (in fact most shabads are his bani) and did not say that I will only add others bani out of humility!
Let’s say I accept that all writings you listed came from Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He still did not include them in SGGS, which is what he declared would be our Shabad Guru moving forward.

@@JashanPaul your comments aren't making sense. If we follow what you say, there's no ardas, no amrit sanchar and no khalsa.

@@JashanPaulbhai Gurdaas ji’s baani is not in SGGS … however we still give it the same respect and important, as per the hukam of the 5th guru sahib ji.

@@RamblingsofaSikh Please let me know what was read in 1699 when Khande Di Pahul was made. Please let me know what the Ardas was before the Sikh Rehat Maryada was created. Are you suggesting that Guru Granth Sahib ji is incomplete and can't make one into Khalsa? Is that not a slap to the Guru's face?
