- Today- it is my birthday :)
and the only thing I really wanted was to share a song with you. It’s been a long time coming, and over the years… so many things had to go just so- there are many moving parts that have contributed and brought me here. I owe more thank-you’s than I can even count. Especially to those who encouraged and even pushed me as I dragged my feet- often heavy with fear and doubt.
“Waukegan Woods” was the first song we recorded in the studio, and possibly the only song that we felt like we got right the first time around. The video, I see as almost a tribute to the past. One last look back before going forward.
Thank you to Dave @waybackwhenpictures7801 for the cinematography. For being here from before the beginning, and getting it all on film. I could always count on you to be that familiar face, cheering me on when it seemed like no one was listening. Thank you for all the adventures and the saving…

What a lovely song. You remind me of Nancy Griffith. You even look a lot like her, which is haunting in a good way :) Maybe a bit more somber in tone, but your approach to your music is sincere like hers and beautiful as well. I love the work of lots of singer/song-writers: John Prine, Iris DeMent, Joni Mitchell, Steve Goodman and so many others like them. But when I discovered Nancy Griffith by chance, I never felt like any performer was able to touch me so deep inside like that before (and I'm a pretty emotional person LOL). She was about my age (69) when she died--just shortly after I "discovered" her. Like thousands, possibly millions, of others, I would love to have had the chance to tell her how she was like a great friend to me through her music. She died way too soon and I miss her so much, like I would miss a best friend. I know you're not her: you are your own person with your own great style. But you remind me of her because of your great talent and similar level of sensitivity. At my age, I've learned the long way that it's always best to say something nice about someone who did something good for you while you can. So, "I wish you love, And happiness, I guess I wish, You all the best." Thanks! :)

Just gorgeous! I’m not sure how this one escaped my hearing/seeing it prior. Thanks to your YT short it popped up. Great storyline to your recording/filming of this, and all the support system to get this accomplished. Kudos to all that encouraged and perhaps pressed you to follow through.

@@Oliasn8 Well, I will have you know that your two-cents really do go a long way-thank you… it’s only been about six months since I really started being active on here, and I can not get over how uplifting and eye-opening this experience of connecting with strangers (mostly) over music has been. I know I will never forget this time… I have grown and been influenced for the better in so many ways. It was hard for me to accept a compliment when I started, and I never would have thought to comment on anyone else’s channel. The biggest realization that I’ve had in all of this, is that people don’t know what you don’t tell them :) haha-it sounds so obvious, but it wasn’t to me. Messages like these have positively changed my perspective and have given me the needed push to share my words of encouragement/admiration/appreciation with others too. Even if it might be, at times, redundant and long winded 😊. I really appreciate your words, thank you! x

I have had the fortune of meeting and having conversations with many of my favorite artists, and the parallel to great artistry seems to me to be the truly humble nature of the artist. You definitely exhibit this quality. I feel that it is part of the process and journey of refining one’s craft that lends to this grounded and whole beingness.
Beyond this though, is how you in turn are an example by virtue of the heartfelt commitment to your art, but also in the transparent way you acknowledge the growing audience you have…and, that you take the time to respond.
On a personal note for me, when you stated that you’ve only been really active on here for six months, you have really emphasized the idea of just beginning. Taking that risk. Being willing to be vulnerable.
I am a musician, albeit in a very different genre, but you have no idea how inspirational this is to me to own it, and put my work out there. The whole “ journey of a thousand miles “ thing.
Bottom line, thank you for however unwittingly being an inspiration to me.

Waukegan? That is the name of the town I was born in. A Town on the Illinois Coast Of Lake Michigan. good music.
That’s the one 😊. My sister lived there for a few years and I was fortunate to visit often. Some of this video was shot there (and also in Utah). I have an earlier video that was shot in Ray Bradbury Park too. Ray Bradbury is my favorite writer of all time, so I was pretty excited when I found out my sister was moving to “Green Town.”

Waukegan caught my attention also. We live on a few acres just North in Wisconsin near Alpine Valley. I had a very dear friend and fellow Boundary Water canoeist, that owned a Music Store on Hy 31 in the middle of Waukegan. Ragoni's. Also, I have noticed a little of the Nancie Griffith in Kelli's music. That is a great thing! Burlington Bill busking on the road and here on You-Tube.

@@kellimoyle The special thing about kxci, the station, is that it's an unaffiliated non-profit community based radio station. It's DJ driven meaning that no one gives us a playlist. Each DJ or programmer (We're all volunteers.) shares the music they like. The Station has been on the air for over 40 years. I've been doing my show, American Traditions, for 20 years. Best of all we get to support local music and businesses. I'm not on any social media. My online presence is basically YT, a backpacking forum and my flickr photo page.
Keep writing, singing and playing. We are listening. The wonderful thing about YT is that anyone can share their life and their talents. Twenty years ago, a musician singing his or her songs on the front porch could have never been heard on the radio no matter how well the quality of the recording. Now they can. Thanks again for the music. And, to quote John Prine, "I wish you all the best."

I wrote this back in 2012 after my first visit to Waukegan, Illinois... at the time there seemed to be nothing but uncertainty in my life and I knew I had a lot of difficult decisions that I really didn't want to, but inevitably would have to be making... it felt pretty scary and incredibly lonely... I was really worn down emotionally and feeling myself shut down a bit. Suddenly nothing felt very familiar anymore or real. Trying to avoid things, I spent my evenings sitting in the backyard- writing and quietly playing music, and retreating into my head. Escaping unpleasant realities... The house directly behind mine, at the time, was set up right up against our shared fence. I never did meet that neighbor, but one day they suddenly had a sword hanging in the window and I used to wonder about it... Actually- I didn't think about this part until now, but in the first scene of the video- it's hard to make out, but that window is behind me in the top left corner.
The song both is and isn't about one specific situation... it is about how "sorries" can't erase all of the words. They can leave scars. And there are some things that you can't quite come back from- also things you shouldn't. It is about how you can end up growing smaller and not as strong as you thought you were/might be.
I think in difficult times the thing we need/are looking for most is to just feel seen- scars and all, and offered a little understanding and compassion.
Time is something I write about quite a bit... It makes a little more sense now after learning a few years ago that my perception of time is literally skewed. But time is also the the only way through to the finding out- to the answers... it's always "wait and see." We don't get to skip ahead to the ending...
I hope that at least kind of answers your question :) Sorry, it's a little all over the place.
