Yeah, when I was 8 (when this movie first came out) and now, Erica was my favorite. And Annelise was my sister's favorite and for Christmas, I got the Erica doll and she got the Annelise doll. 😊
"I close my eyes and feel myself fly a thousand miles away. I could take flight but would it be right? My conscience tells me stay!" They are standing on high balconies when they say this. I just realized how that could have a rather dark interpretation...
I'm 18, I now know where my love for musicals comes from! I was surprised as I revisited the movie with my grandmother and realized how much it is like an actual musical or play
Back when Barbie had real lessons. “I’ll remain forever royal, I’ll repay my parents debt. Duty means doing the things your heart may well regret”. I feel like the morals are lost in today’s Barbie. So many people today have the mindset “look out for number 1” (yourself) and just follow your heart, regardless of how it affects others. Erika was working off a debt she didn’t borrow. She was willing to basically be a slave to madame carp because she was taking responsibility and paying her (I assume dead) parents’ debt. Annalise was going to sacrifice herself and marry a man she didn’t love to save the lives of her people. Sacrifice, dedication, loyalty, true love and determination all taught in just one Barbie movie. Even just in this one song
Jamie Delancy Madame carp doesn’t confirm that they are alive. All that’s said about the parents are “your parents should have thought of that when they borrowed so much” and Erikas response “they did it to feed me”. I could be wrong but I always took it as they borrowed money to be able to feed her when she was younger but then died before they could pay it off, thereby leaving Erika with the debt. It doesn’t make sense that she would be the only one working to pay it back when they borrowed it if they were still alive. But 🤷🏼♀️. That’s just how I always interpreted it
@@brittanywilliford5428 and @Aimee. Stawr I get where you both are coming from, but if her parents are dead then there isn't really anything stopping her from running away. I get that she's trying to repay her parents' debt but if they were dead then she doesn't really have a responsibility to anyone but herself but she remains which is why I assume her parents are still alive. But your point of her parents not being at the wedding is making me rethink
When i was younger, I was less sympathetic to Annalise's situation. I loved her of course, she was a great character, but I've always thought her problems were lesser than Erika's. But now that I'm older and step back I'm like OH??!!! Annalise had to force herself into this marriage because their whole kingdom would be in poverty otherwise like,,,, if at that time Annalise chose to run away from her responsibilities, there would be a WHOLE lot more Erikas in that country. Yikes heavy is the head that wears the crown.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that if there’s one thing this song makes clear, it’s that Erika had hope that one day she would be free to sing to adoring crowds, while Annalise had no hope whatsoever. She had resigned herself to being trapped in a loveless marriage for the rest of her life with no hope of freedom.
@@ia490 yes and the sad thing is that her situation isn't that farfetched from reality. Of course not every girl is forced to marry a rich king to save their country, but there are many girls who are trapped in arranged marriages, where they have no voice or hope for freedom.
"There's more to living than gloves and gowns and threads and seams." I've always loved that line. It's the exact same for both girls but means two ENTIRELY different things within the context of their stories. UGH! I love the old Barbie movies ❤
She didn't mean that she didn't care about this song and all the Barbie classics. She meant that she doesn't care (about what people could say maybe, remarks, how old it is or whatever) and that no matter what, her kids are gonna watch the classics because she it meant something to her childhood.
+Natasha Romanoff OH MY GOD YES. I have such a big problem with the new ones, the plot and the animation. Princess and the pauper, The 12 dancing princesses, and the diamond castle were a couple of my favorites.
Some people have been saying that the princess is being ungrateful for everything she’s been given. That may be true yes, but think about it from her perspective. All her life she’s been controlled, forced to follow rules all her life, and have her life perfectly planned out. She never has any time for herself or even let to be herself. Her entire life is being planned out and followed out so someone else can be happy. But, she herself isn’t. I think that’s why she says that her and the pauper are the same in the other song. They’ve both been trapped in situation from birth and she knows what it feels like to be controlled her whole life. I know the princess has had an easier life and I do admire the Pauper for her determination and hard work, but I do sympathize with the Princess.
LPS DiamondsTV exactly. They were in equally bad situations. Sure the Annalise got gifts. But like she said “every present comes with strings”. She was going to have to marry a man she didn’t love. No present or royal privilege can make up for that.
I do agree with that - but that's me as the third party who can observe everything objectively. If i were Erika, who are working hard to pay her debt, i won't be able to point the Princess and say "I'm just like you~🎵" on our first meeting, i'll surely have some jealousy in me....
@@shinonnaman5529 in the video were the princess and the pauper meet there are some comments that say they don't understand how erika could understand the princess problem of getting married.
I'd like to appreciate how they both decide to accept their positions, like in most movies this would be the part where they get fed up with their lifes and start doing everything in their power to change it, but Erika and Annelise both decide to put their duty above their dreams, soldier on and bear the responsibilities & burdens society and birth put on them. I think that's really admirable
I would disagree and say they forsook neither their dreams or their duties, but rather found a balance between them. Annalese married the man she loved while saving her queendom's economy. Meanwhile Erica paid off her loan, sang around the world, and married her love.
I am 17 and I have literally watched ALL barbie movies including the most recent one but The Princess and The Pauper is THE BEST barbie movie out of all. It has the best soundtracks, story and characters. I wish barbie movies can continue being this classic.
kinda annoyed that my elementary school self didn't get how awful Anneliese's situation was... she has to marry some random rich dude to prevent the whole kingdom from collapsing. but she's in love with someone who she can't marry, and she just has to go along with it or her whole country will suffer. the fate of the entire realm is on her shoulders.
I feel like it’s only when I get older that I understand how horrible Annalise’s situation was. I’ve always adored her character (and admittedly childishly wished that I were her), but now that I listen to this song again I realize her life was downright…sad. “Now I fear I’ll never be free.” She was a caged bird. Erika had her whole life full of possibilities waiting for her, but Annalise’s had been set for her the moment she was born. There would be no freedom, no happiness, and perhaps no love. Her heart was elsewhere while she was forced to become the bride of a wealthy stranger. She knew and accepted that. Erika was full of dreams- but Annalise had no dream. That, to me, is probably the saddest thing in the film
That’s one thing I loved about Erica needing to play as Anneliese. At first she thought it’d be fun and games bc she’s a princess, she has everything. But once she got past the pretty package of it all she noticed how little say Anneliese truly had in her life. And even Anneliese who knew ppl were struggling but didn’t know the extent bc she never went outside of the castle. She realized the problem wasn’t just poverty, it was the way that the poor were treated by those who were well off. I especially loved how Anneliese showed growth by stepping into a leadership role on her own, and Erica’s was learning that loving someone doesn’t make you trapped or weak.
There are 2 little butterflies in this film, a pink one and a blue one but they only appear twice and then they dissappear, I wonder what happened to them.
I can't believe that Barbie ripped off their own movie with "The Princess and the Popstar" This movie was about duty, loyalty, and pushing through hard times, no matter the consequences. The Princess and the Popstar was about how magic hair brushes and microphones can get you into a sticky situation with enough hope. Even though Princess and the Popstar has its own morals, like protecting those you love and whatnot, this movie is so much better. I wish Barbie movies were like this.
They made another rip off which is on Netflix. Ngl I even forgot the title of it. It's about Barbie being vlogger and there's a Princess who looks like her. They switch places and there's a subplot where they must have their freedom of speech. It was pretty average but of course, it doesn't beat Princess and the Pauper.
@@ghadlydevastated2067 it's called Barbie Princess Adventure, i believe this movie was the fourth princess pauper rip off. the third one was the rock and royals
Yeah, the themes went over our heads as a kid "Every present comes with strings" And "Duty means doing things your heart may well regret" Are a few examples
it's almost like they expected the little kids to come back as teens out of nostalgia and fall back in love because this is actually... really deep? like it's got the stuff to keep little kids in. pretty music, basic love, cats, and pretty dresses. an evil villain and ugly sidekicks. but it's got draws for older people too and i think that's really cool.
Yeah,, I didn't get it until yesterday I listened to these songs again. So is the "If you love me for me" and "Cat's meow" Also the "how to be a princess" is pretty heavy actually
I remember being so sad that i had every other Barbie movie at the time but could never find Princess and the Pauper. It always seemed to be sold out or we were in a rush and could not pick it up.I had watched it though,i'm thinking maybe after 10 years later i could get the DVD's.I still have the board game and barbies after all.
That was my favorite Barbie movie and it still is :) I just hate the new ones everything is pink and full with glitter and anoying popmusic. The old movies had beautiful music, stories and an actually meaning behind them. Hey update, i changed a lot, and found that the main reason i had a dislike for pink and girly back then was internalized mysoginy, yikes! Thr main reason the new movies are bad are honestly the new storylines, and especially,, the animation. It got rlllllly bad, especially in that dolphin one. But even the new ones, at rhe time that i first wrote this comment, have great things abt them! So yea, :3 Also update 2, i rlly love pink. Like a lot. And i wont stop ☆
Anneliese: Now I fear I'll never be Erica: Soon I will forever be Both: Free This part really hit me, like Anneliese didn't even think she had any hope of doing what she wants ever in her life. She was born with a responsibility to her people and she already surrendered herself to her fate. That's actually so sad
Most people think that only Erika was struggling in this movie without thinking about how the movie portrays how everyone has struggles. Erika has a chance to make decisions for herself and marry anyone she may like yet she doesn't have the pedestal and wealth to strive for her dreams. But Anneliese also has her own set of problems. That's why she says "You would think that I'm so lucky That I have so many things I'm realizing that every present comes with strings." Not only can she not choose who she marries, but everything she receives isn't given for genuineness but for something in return. Her gifts aren't gifts, they're transactions. She can't even have a day where she decides what to do as all her moves are scheduled. Both Erika and Anneliese are caged by their social statuses. Erika is a slave to Madame Carpe and Anneliese is a slave to her crown.
But it is kinda sad that Anneliese being of a royal status n a Princess also, had no extra power, freedom or rights and her life was just like a common girl bound with orthodox societal burdens, Because she was princess she wasn't able to choose her own decision freely, She didn't had right to change certain things , She still was treated how a common woman in society might be treated like a doll to follow stupid rules n lectures on 'How to be timid, quiet n attractive all', and please public, just the form of pleasing was royal, If there was a Prince Instead he would have got a chance to choose a partner of choice, not carry burden of walking, smiling or laughing in certain 'allowed way' only, he could have got more rights to change certain administration rules of kingdom , etc. Apart from amnt of wealth, both women's life was difficult where they had no control or choice on things happening to them in their lives
I've lost count of the times I watched this movie as a kid. I even remember making up gibberish words because I was too young (read: stupid) to know the bigger words used in the song. Old Barbie movies were the best.
Dalia Ng yesss! i totally agree with you. i've no plans whatsoever to watch the 3rd generation barbie movies ugh they're nothing compared to these classics
In the year 2035..... Kid: Mom! I don't want to watch all of your old barbie movies on DVD. The animation is terrible. Can't I just watch the new high resolution action movies? Me: No! I don't care if the animation is terrible! The music is great, the plots are actually interesting, and they teach you important life lessons! You WILL watch them and you WILL like them!
As a 23 y/o young man, I unironically appreciate the soundtrack of this movie so much more now than when watching it with my younger girl cousins at around 5.
Damn 2004 omgg.. I remember when it first came out too!!! I used to collect barbie dvds every year it came out. from the nutcracker one(2001) from the one with the pegasus. so many years has gone by i used to love this song and well, still love it
Lenlen Right? I used to pride myself in having all the dvds. I still love the songs AND the movies. Barbie stories just aren't as good anymore, they used to have interesting stories, the newer ones are all the same princess/pink girly, reproduced story lines just to sell toys.
I grew up in an abusive and homophobic household and Barbie movies gave me so much hope. I would sing this song in particular and hope and prayed I would one day be free. I’m now 23 and I’m singing this song and crying because not only am I free but I cut off my abusive family, moved out and independent and getting therapy to heal from all my childhood trauma. In my dreams I was free and now I literally am free ❤️
what you went through is terrible. It’s good that you’ve escaped and now you can start healing. i wish you all the best. My household growing up was homophobic and emotionally abusive too, so i can relate. i was always trapped as a boy when i didn’t want to be one. Now as an adult i am free to live my life as a woman :)
3:20 When you know they are both standing at the balcony at this point, the verse "I could take flight but would it be right" takes on a whole new darker meaning.
THE WAY MY EYES WIDENED OMG shit man i didn't think of it like this...I thought of it more as dissociating but your way makes sense due to the fact that they are on a balcony..
I love how despite the fact that these movies were basically made just to sell dolls, they put so much effort into them, the story, the characters, the songs, the messages. Just, they didn’t have to do all this, but they did.
The older Barbie movies are way better than the new ones. This has always been my favorite. It's the music, the story, the characters, just everything. The songs in the newer Barbie movies sound too modern and pop-ish. One reason the songs in this movie worked so well with everything is because it sounded fitting enough for the time and it's much catchier. If the now new Barbie movies came out when I was younger, I wouldn't still like Barbie as much as I do now.
Classic Barbie movies being the ones to portray complex, good female characters with themes of capitalism, duty over love, impoverishment, hope and courage truly brings tears to my eyes.
The thing is, Erika’s situation is blatantly fucked up, everyone realizes that. She is working, under not very good conditions mind you, to pay the debt she didn’t borrow, and the woman she is working for her is terrible. And all the while, all she wants to do is to be free and sing. But I feel like most people understand how equally messed up Annaliese’s situation is, only when they get a little older. She is a princess, she is going to marry a king, there is no problem, right? Wrong. She will forever be trapped in a loveless marriage, while being in love with someone else. And if she doesn’t go through with it, the poverty of her people will be on her hands. She has no hope of freedom, and she knows and accepts it. Meanwhile, Erika hopes that one day she will be free, once her debt is paid, many years later.
I feel like people at some level do notice the loveless marriage thing, but what they really miss is the fact that sure she's living a luxurious life and all but her life is literally scheduled and controlled by others. She has no freedom to choose what SHE wants to do. Even in little things like when she says she can't even go to the library and read at her own will. That's just so sad. I mean what's the point of having things if you can't even enjoy them. And while Erica has the hope of repaying her debt and moving on, Annalise will never stop being responsible for her people and will have to live her life according other people.
People also only focus on the love part. They ignore that Annaliese has no hope of escape, that she never gets to choose her own life. She will always be in service to her kingdom. She doesn't get to be mad or sad either. She has to be perfect all the time.
this song is actually quite dark if u think of it. _"i close my eyes and feel myself fly a thousand miles away. i could take flight but would it be right, my conscience tells me stay"_ Both of them were walking towards the end of the balcony, wanting to jump off which explains "i could take flight" but their mind tells them to stay. *damn*
I think that's just one of those "messed up childhood" theories, and I don't think it the original lyrics insinuate suicide. More like they want to be free like the birds who can go wherever they please with their freedom of flight.
Hey, it just occured to me: Anneliese's part in this song is about when you are young and going to school and Erica's part is about when you are a grown up...
Especially, that part about others thinking being a kid (Anneliese's part in this case) is "so lucky". It's not, it's just a different kind of low-key slavery.
to skip the beginning ----- 0:32 to skip Madame carp ------ 1:51 to skip the queen --------- 2:36 To skip bridge ---------3:31 Repost of what @Ace said
This was a repost of someone else's comment, you don't HAVE to skip the bridge, I probably usually would because I don't want to hear all the talking interruptions in the beginning portion of the song, which for me is annoying.
I just got the "I'm starting to realize every present comes with strings" line has a double meaning to it!! That's actually really cool that they did that, cause besides that, the literal meaning of the line doesn't really make sense in the song, it's just kinda there.
+Juliette Braden I only just realised it too! The Barbie films used really complex language in cases - this one especially - and it's interesting to watch it now.
How is it possible that 10 years later (god I feel old) this song just becomes more and more perfect?!?!? Oh yeah, because I actually relate to the lyrics now XD
I never realized as a child just how well-written this song is...as well as other Barbie songs but I'm incredibly happy that I can appreciate them even more now as an adult
It's not Cabary, it's cabaret. It's like an old dance hall of sorts. 13 and I still watch these. My dad agrees that these are actually really good quality movies. I think my favorite is either this one, Rapunzel, or Swan Lake.
I love the fact that when you read through these comments, there are no hate comments about this movie and the other oldies❤️ It just shows how much better the older ones are; how they have such a deep meaning and how non other new movie can compare to the older ones such as this one. ❤️
I'm honestly just now realizing how deep and message filled these songs are now that I'm literally 17. Wow. I love this movie and soundtrack sm it's unhealthy.
This is one of the best barbie movies ever created - it has real meaning behind it, unlike the crap they play for kids now. I will always love this movie.
This movie taught us the REAL lessons. No matter what we want to do, we must always fulfill our responsibilities first, and everything will work itself out later and you'll be able to do what you want, after you handled things responsibly.
I’m not regretting having to grow up watching these barbie movies, this one is my favorite, no magic or any complicating plots just pure love and meaningful songs.
Jake English I love your name. And yeah, but I started watching it when I was, like, 5 and I still remember every song. I was such a hugeee fan or barbie especially the old ones!
I releazed something I didn't when I was a little girl. "I'm learning every present comes with strings" has double meaning. What we see is ribbons on every gift, but what she's really saying is that everything comes with strings attached; everything comes with a condition; a responsibility; an expectation; a rule; something required in return. Nothing is given simply because someone wants to be nice. It's really quite sad when you think about it and it applies to both girls.
God I'm back after a year and this is still so well put together. beautiful and a deep meaning behind every line. both of their situations were hard. Erika was personally always my favorite for being so hardworking and relatable but I loved Anneliese for everything she stood for: elegance, beauty, intelligence, and selflessness. Anneliese had to face the world with a smile on her face, know she had to marry a man to take the burden off her mother's shoulders, and leave behind the man she truly loved to save him and the entire kingdom from starvation and poverty. Dom is a good man but he wasn't the one she loved and that would've haunted Anneliese forever.
Am i the only one who heavily relates to this song😭 its so healing i always wish to be free and im also trapped in my circumstances with a lot of responsibilities and i wish i could escape😭 But this song reminds me to keep being strong, push on, stay hopeful and positive and hold onto the dream in your heart and work hard dont give up. The pain is temporary and one day the sun will shine again. Stay hopeful. One day you’ll be free
I am 22yrs old and I still love this film...I have not watched this in ages whih is pretty shocking...I was watching Frozen the other day and I couldn't help but think how similar the songs both seemed to be and after watchimg Frozen all I was doing was humming this song...it is such a lovely song and I dont feel embarrassed singing along to it...I really need to watch it again ♡♥♡
I really wish society collectively would seem to pretend that Princess Analise isn't practically being sold to a stranger for political reasons and that that's a very good reason to be unhappy
I was 6/7 years old singing this song with random lyrics happily (im not native btw) and now im 22 crying to this because i related to the lyrics so much in life
Me staying in university to meet filial and societal expectations instead of dropping out and pursuing my true passion: "I close my eyes and feel myself fly a thousand miles away. I could take flight but would it be right, my conscience tells me stay. Duty means doing the things your heart may well regret." :'( I have more than one year left to waste in this place. It's not 37 years, but every second here is killing me more and more and I'm so scared that by the time I graduate, it will be impossible to go into the career of my choice. Way leads on to way, and I might never have the chance to turn back and change my path. I'm so scared I won't end up becoming who I potentially can be, who I know I can be, if only my family's financial status was vastly better. I'm so scared I'll only be free in my dreams.
@@valj137 ❤️❤️ glad to hear that your financial situation is doing better. You're still young and have so much life left... hope you keep fighting for your dream and continue to pursue your passion!!!
I wish elementary school me understood the horrible situations Annalise and Erica went through. They both had it equally horrible. But old Barbie movies had a moral that portrayed a beautiful message like in this movie “Duty means doing the things your heart may well regret”. “I’m realizing that every present comes with strings”. “I’ll repay my parents’ debt”. Like there’s a moral about following your heart and doing the right thing even if you end up regretting it. Nowadays it’s pink glitter and annoying pop music and sucky animation that just talks about how you’re always #1 (which is good) but it doesn’t teach about empathy, sympathy, selflessness, or helping others. I prefer the classic Barbie and always will.
You know, it’s weird that I am a grown man, and I actually like this movie to this day. Mainly it’s because my little sister would have me watch the old Barbie movies with her when we were kids, and I honestly started to like a few of them after a while. And I also can’t deny the soundtrack for this one is the best out of all of them.
You know why I love old Barbie movies so much? Whenever I had a bad day, or I'm scared about something, they always make me forget when I watch them. The nostalgia just makes me forget my worries and calm me down. I will forever treasure them no matter how old I get
I heard "society tea" in class and then this song which I hadn't heard in over a decade popped in my head only for me to realize that I still remember every word of all of the songs in this movie by heart. And now that I'm older I see all of the second meanings and more mature themes that went over my head as a child. I will always have this movie and soundtrack in my heart at all times. I mean: -being smart about interest/money/loans, -meaning of duty, -how we are all connected one way or another even if we don't see it first hand (when they meet and the princess is -wearing the dress she made), -be yourself (wolfie and the rocks when they are going to drown to death) [nothing new in movies or barbie movies, but --worth noting], -harsh or unusual labor, -no good dead goes unpunished/no matter how pretty the gift wrapper may seem there are always strings attached, -putting what needs to be done over your own personal(or selfish) feeling/wants -knowing the difference between want and need -no one is alone in any issue or problem there will always be someone going through or has gone through your troubles who is willing to help ect.
I feel for Annalise. Yes she had her needs catered to but she had no autonomy. She didn’t get to make choices about anything, even who she were to marry. She had the resources to do anything and still wasn’t allowed to do it. She was an academic at heart and knew she was fit to be regent, yet she was nearly made to marry a king she did not love who’d run the kingdom instead.
Everyone gets annoyed with Erica for being upset at her situation but it really is a strain on her and it’s fair to be depressed about it. And she was strong and doing it anyway!
"I'm realizing that every present comes with strings." Damn, that's deep.
What's wrong with deep
+Super Kangaroo who said deep was wrong? lol
What does it mean?

It was my dream as a kid to have a balcony because of this movie. Still don’t have one but at least I still know the lyrics haha
I do like what your saying but it's confirmed by Madame Carp that Erika's parents are still alive when she mentions how much they borrowed

She had resigned herself to being trapped in a loveless marriage for the rest of her life with no hope of freedom.
I wish more people realized this. I see so many comments in the other songs belittling her struggle.
@@ia490 yes and the sad thing is that her situation isn't that farfetched from reality. Of course not every girl is forced to marry a rich king to save their country, but there are many girls who are trapped in arranged marriages, where they have no voice or hope for freedom.
Never have I ever related to a character so much in my life ☺
That's why Erica says she's just like her.
"There's more to living than gloves and gowns and threads and seams."
I've always loved that line. It's the exact same for both girls but means two ENTIRELY different things within the context of their stories. UGH! I love the old Barbie movies ❤
I don't care shit, my kids are gonna watch classics.
This goes right in the childhood
If you do not care about this stuff, then you shouldn't have commented then
She didn't mean that she didn't care about this song and all the Barbie classics. She meant that she doesn't care (about what people could say maybe, remarks, how old it is or whatever) and that no matter what, her kids are gonna watch the classics because she it meant something to her childhood.
Same and I love 5sos too BUT BARBIE
Same. Like, Ima just buy all my old cartoons and old movies and just have my children watch them.
Bluestar797,
YOU GOT DAT RIGHT! XD
I miss these kinds of Barbie movies and the way they looked.
+Natasha Romanoff OH MY GOD YES. I have such a big problem with the new ones, the plot and the animation. Princess and the pauper, The 12 dancing princesses, and the diamond castle were a couple of my favorites.
+Aliya Zaidi ikr! I miss these so much!!!!
I love this song it's really nice and I love all the songs from barbie princess and the pauper and I love the songs from barbie in diamond castle too

LadyOfBroadway333 lmaooooo
LOL that's fucking sad
@@brittanywilliford5428 and also erica could repay her debt while annalise had no way of escaping her problems
Who is saying that? She literally sings about it in a song
This is by far the most inspirational comment I’ve ever read! It made me really emotional reading this! 💛
Agreed 100%
best comment ever
I would disagree and say they forsook neither their dreams or their duties, but rather found a balance between them. Annalese married the man she loved while saving her queendom's economy. Meanwhile Erica paid off her loan, sang around the world, and married her love.
I am 17 and I have literally watched ALL barbie movies including the most recent one but The Princess and The Pauper is THE BEST barbie movie out of all. It has the best soundtracks, story and characters. I wish barbie movies can continue being this classic.
I agree, I'm still in love with this movie, completely. It's honestly the best out of all barbie movies!
Still my favourite and I’m almost 18 XD
it’s my fav, 2. fun fact: it came out the same year I was born
Same this one and the Diamond Castle are my top 2!😃
And it has preminger.

Slightly annoyed that my elementary school self never fully understood how crappy Erica's situation actually was...
Love your profile pic 😍❣️
kinda annoyed that my elementary school self didn't get how awful Anneliese's situation was... she has to marry some random rich dude to prevent the whole kingdom from collapsing. but she's in love with someone who she can't marry, and she just has to go along with it or her whole country will suffer. the fate of the entire realm is on her shoulders.
Agree to all
Magpie ok but that random rich dude was Dominic & he’s a sweetie☺️ you’d think a king would be a lot older & not as nice as he was

Michelle The doll when they start singing
Yup.
It is sad, they are both trapped, but only Erika thought that she would be free
"now i fear I'll never be"
"Soon I will forever be"
*"Free"*
really show's the difference between them aswell
Hear, hear.
There are 2 little butterflies in this film, a pink one and a blue one but they only appear twice and then they dissappear, I wonder what happened to them.
I can't believe that Barbie ripped off their own movie with "The Princess and the Popstar"
This movie was about duty, loyalty, and pushing through hard times, no matter the consequences.
I love both, but this one is just so much better.

Yeah, the themes went over our heads as a kid
"Every present comes with strings"
And "Duty means doing things your heart may well regret"
Are a few examples
it's almost like they expected the little kids to come back as teens out of nostalgia and fall back in love because this is actually... really deep? like it's got the stuff to keep little kids in. pretty music, basic love, cats, and pretty dresses. an evil villain and ugly sidekicks. but it's got draws for older people too and i think that's really cool.
Yeah,, I didn't get it until yesterday I listened to these songs again. So is the "If you love me for me" and "Cat's meow" Also the "how to be a princess" is pretty heavy actually

7 year old me anxious to beat up her matron but I have to finish singing the song first
Anneliese: Now I fear I'll never be
Erica: Soon I will forever be
Both: Free
This part really hit me, like Anneliese didn't even think she had any hope of doing what she wants ever in her life. She was born with a responsibility to her people and she already surrendered herself to her fate. That's actually so sad
Erika had it worse tbh
@@narizota at least she had hope
@@narizota In real life Annelise would of most likely married a man twice her age.
That's why she says
"You would think that I'm so lucky
That I have so many things
I'm realizing that every present comes with strings."
Not only can she not choose who she marries, but everything she receives isn't given for genuineness but for something in return. Her gifts aren't gifts, they're transactions. She can't even have a day where she decides what to do as all her moves are scheduled.
Both Erika and Anneliese are caged by their social statuses. Erika is a slave to Madame Carpe and Anneliese is a slave to her crown.
Very beautiful observation
But it is kinda sad that Anneliese being of a royal status n a Princess also, had no extra power, freedom or rights and her life was just like a common girl bound with orthodox societal burdens, Because she was princess she wasn't able to choose her own decision freely, She didn't had right to change certain things , She still was treated how a common woman in society might be treated like a doll to follow stupid rules n lectures on 'How to be timid, quiet n attractive all', and please public, just the form of pleasing was royal,
If there was a Prince Instead he would have got a chance to choose a partner of choice, not carry burden of walking, smiling or laughing in certain 'allowed way' only, he could have got more rights to change certain administration rules of kingdom , etc.

Wmpumpuml
Lgmpump😢❤
The older Barbie movies are way better than the new ones. This has always been my favorite. It's the music, the story, the characters, just everything. The songs in the newer Barbie movies sound too modern and pop-ish. One reason the songs in this movie worked so well with everything is because it sounded fitting enough for the time and it's much catchier. If the now new Barbie movies came out when I was younger, I wouldn't still like Barbie as much as I do now.
yeah and they're more traditional
Yes I agree
I feel like people at some level do notice the loveless marriage thing, but what they really miss is the fact that sure she's living a luxurious life and all but her life is literally scheduled and controlled by others. She has no freedom to choose what SHE wants to do. Even in little things like when she says she can't even go to the library and read at her own will. That's just so sad. I mean what's the point of having things if you can't even enjoy them. And while Erica has the hope of repaying her debt and moving on, Annalise will never stop being responsible for her people and will have to live her life according other people.
Phmog
Zmono
People also only focus on the love part. They ignore that Annaliese has no hope of escape, that she never gets to choose her own life. She will always be in service to her kingdom. She doesn't get to be mad or sad either. She has to be perfect all the time.
I miss the old Barbie. :( And yes, I'm still watching this on 2016. I feel so damn old why..

this song is actually quite dark if u think of it.
_"i close my eyes and feel myself fly a thousand miles away. i could take flight but would it be right, my conscience tells me stay"_
Both of them were walking towards the end of the balcony, wanting to jump off which explains "i could take flight" but their mind tells them to stay.
*damn*
'Flight' just means leave and go far away, they're on a balcony because that's a super princess thing to do.
Or run away far from home.....
I think that's just one of those "messed up childhood" theories, and I don't think it the original lyrics insinuate suicide. More like they want to be free like the birds who can go wherever they please with their freedom of flight.
I don't think they mean it that way, it probably means that they can fly, freely like a bird, away to somewhere
IK I'm 5 years late BUT I don't think kids are forced into a arranged marriage so their kingdom doesn't go into poverty.

Sitting here in quarantine with a barbie song marathon. I'm 17 and always will love Barbie. I don't care if I'm 60, I will still collect these movies.
Quarantine has gotten me into this movie again. I relate to Anneliese (even thought I'm brunette.)
Where are the kids that grew up watching this on tv? This inspired a whole generation.
2002 kid here
I releazed something I didn't when I was a little girl.
For me this is the best Barbie movie, brings back so much memories :')
Am i the only one who heavily relates to this song😭 its so healing i always wish to be free and im also trapped in my circumstances with a lot of responsibilities and i wish i could escape😭
But this song reminds me to keep being strong, push on, stay hopeful and positive and hold onto the dream in your heart and work hard dont give up. The pain is temporary and one day the sun will shine again. Stay hopeful. One day you’ll be free

No but she did get freedom.
Yup she she got freedom, the store closed at the end of the movie
A question ive been asking for 10 years
Ikr i always felt bad when I laughed at her for asking that as a kid
Me staying in university to meet filial and societal expectations instead of dropping out and pursuing my true passion:
"I close my eyes and feel myself fly a thousand miles away. I could take flight but would it be right, my conscience tells me stay. Duty means doing the things your heart may well regret."
:'( I have more than one year left to waste in this place.
Hope you’re doing ok now ❤️
@@Neptunethelovebird Hi thank you so much
@@valj137 ❤️❤️ glad to hear that your financial situation is doing better.
“duty means doing the things your heart may well regret” I’ve never forgotten this line, it really hits deep
28 having my first child and I cannot wait to watch Barbie and Disney movies with them 🥰
Years ago as a child...i never knew barbie songs had such great meanings.....🥲
I'm 21 and I still love this movie. I still have the Erika doll. XD
LUCKY YOU!!!! I wish I had the old classic barbie dolls!!!!! I only have the Rapunzel one!!!! 😣
I have both the anneleise and erika dolls ( Im 15 though) They arent in good condition though lmao
Do they still sell them? I'm almost 17 and.... I actually would really love having them hahaha
You know why I love old Barbie movies so much? Whenever I had a bad day, or I'm scared about something, they always make me forget when I watch them. The nostalgia just makes me forget my worries and calm me down. I will forever treasure them no matter how old I get
2:09 uhhh this verse was my favorite!! especially the "marry whom i choose" one omg mom i'm sobbinhgghg
Turning 25 and I'm still listening and singing to this album. My childhood 🥺❤
Need to watch this again. Was by far my favorite barbie movie ever, im 16 and still watch the newst ones!
I really like the contrast of the lyrics,
Anneliese: "Soon I fear I'll never be"
Erica: "Soon I will forever be"
Both: "Free."
I mean:
-being smart about interest/money/loans,
-meaning of duty,
-how we are all connected one way or another even if we don't see it first hand (when they meet and the princess is -wearing the dress she made),
-be yourself (wolfie and the rocks when they are going to drown to death) [nothing new in movies or barbie movies, but --worth noting],
-harsh or unusual labor,
-no good dead goes unpunished/no matter how pretty the gift wrapper may seem there are always strings attached,
-putting what needs to be done over your own personal(or selfish) feeling/wants
-knowing the difference between want and need
-no one is alone in any issue or problem there will always be someone going through or has gone through your troubles who is willing to help
ect.
