Menuhin is so full of himself that he failed to observe that K did NOT, in fact, "stand there" at any time he might have observed him. Klemperer SAT in his last years. Menuhin's condescension in his remarks here--and elsewhere toward Casals (likening him to a peasant)--is truly deplorable. But his respect for Furtwangler knew no bounds. Yehudi the humanitarian. @@JackOstinato Thank you for your comment. I agree with you about filtering and prejudices but Menuhin's case is extreme. What you call his "opinions" are invariably self-aggrandingly and ostentatiously "humanitarian" and far-reaching, and yet on the level of basic interaction on a human level--with Klemperer and Casals, his remarks betray a deplorable insensitivity ( as I detailed above). One could say that the real human being is quite at odds with his strenuously deceminated self-image.
One of the best conductors of all time, a genius! His Beethoven's cycle with the Philharmonia Orchestra is a must, a reference recording.
I was in the Philharmonia Chorus in the 60's and 70's and had the honour of being in concerts conducted by Dr. Klemperer. Unforgettable.
