    Fun to watch. I'm trying to learn how to do this in a flight sim. Crabbing is fairly intuitive, but I'm still a disaster at straightening back out, and getting a clean & controlled touchdown.

      Pick the right aircraft. get a lot of height. slowly apply aileron and balance with opposite rudder until you get desired angle. all the time adjusting fore and aft stick to keep correct airspeed. Ease off aileron and rudder smoothly just above ground level might need some forward stick. practice and have fun.

      Thanks Ken. A good way to practice landings is with r/c airplanes. You can get a ton of practice and the skills do transfer to full size. You just have to have the right r/c airplane. What's funny is that experience with full size doesn't transfer too well in the other direction to r/c. I flew r/c as a child and it helped when it came to getting my private pilot certificate. When I've let a pilot with no r/c experience (or little) fly one of my models, they typically are diving the plane to the ground within seconds. Never too late to learn r/c if you don't fly them. Now with that said, I practice landings full size every time I fly and practice many different scenarios. Landing is fun!

    With such a short landing roll, why not just land directly into the wind. I landed a Cub across the runway when the winds came up. I knew the tower operator and ask him to clear to land without any runway number.

      I did but it was farther down the runway and not captured on video. I usually will only land across the runway if the crosswind is too much for the airplane, which is rare. If the airplane will fly away while just sitting on the ground without me in it, then that means it's too windy. If people have to hold the airplane down, that's my guide to not go flying. 🙂

      The manufacturer will say 70 (I think 80 is now on their website) but I cruise at 45 to 50 mph. Easier on the engine and air-frame.

    do you position the carbs level with the engine or tilt them forward to make them level in flight?

      Level with the engine. The engine is level in flight but not on the ground.

      @@stlmusic around rpm does the EGT start reading around 1000 degrees. I'm trying to dial in jets for my mikuni carbs, I'm at around 900 degrees at 5000 rpm. I can't really run it up to full speed where I am right now.

      That is a runway (09/27) and airport. On the charts with over 25 plans based there.

    Hey there!
    Great CW training! You figured out that you were turning straight too soon on the first few landings, but you got it sewed up TIGHT!
    I learned to fly in Casper, WY, where we flew training right up to 30mph sustained (Central WY, Casper, Daily Average wind is usually 15mph-17mph give or take the year). Gusts for CW training usually were 40mph-45, above 45 we shut it down.
    My training was in a Cessna 172, with a 150hp engine; loved that bird.
    Could you provide some context on your bird?
    Engine, prop, flaps, etc., it would help.
    Great watching you nail it time and again....brought back some great memories, and some of them were indeed, white knuckle moments!!

      Actually I was not kicking it too soon. You need to know how much of each control you will need, especially when it's gusty. 2 inches off the ground is not when you want to find that out. Some people are of the mindset to fly a large portion of your approach with the cross control in, others at the very last second. I'm in that foot or two off the ground group.

      @@FourthWayRanch I’m guessing you are flying a firefly with 13”. The tires for the firestar are usually 15” with 6” rims. I’m nut running the original rims but they are 6”. All the firefly’s at our field are using the 13” tires without issue on grass.

    Looks to me like you have spent some time in a 233 glider the best way imho to learn how to FLY an aircraft

      Hi Chris. I'm not a glider pilot but I have flown in them with my dad when I was a kid. Although I'm have my private pilot rating, the greatest help in learning to fly was flying r/c gliders as a kid. When I was 10 my brother and I would take turns launching on a high start and just shooting landing after landing when there were no thermals. Eventually I started flying glow models and would just shoot landing after landing. I wouldn't be surprised if I have over 100,000 r/c landings. I'm around 10,000 in my firestar as I find landing the most fun I can have flying. I'm fortunate to have a flying field where if no one else is flying, I can practice landing from either direction. You can get a lot of landings in a short time. Learning how to control an aircraft in windy conditions opens up a lot more days to fly. You also might get the airport to yourself ;-)

      Imagine A World 20 to 25. Flew in similar winds last week but no video of those crosswinds landings.

      Only flew one once as the owner wanted me to take up a new pilot to show him some things. No wind that day. I would imagine they would but the original firestar does even better than the firestar 2.

      Wrong. You don’t try to hold cross control for all of final. You feed it in right near the end. Much more control.. if you’re slipping when it’s not needed, someone taught you incorrectly..

      @@stlmusic well then I guess I’ve been doing it wrong for almost 50 years and I have been in some winds when you would have transitioned from a crab to a forward slip I would have been blown off course during the transition if my instructor would have caught me landing like that there would have been an abrupt butt chewing. Not to say there isn’t times to use a crab in a cross wind but every body who learned from my instructor learned to crab on final just not right to touch down. My two cents problem no one teaches the good fundamentals of flying any more.

      @@wreckum56think about what you said. You don’t have the cross control needed when transitioning to land but somehow you do if you already have the control input? Sounds like you don’t know how to transition. You have a lot more control of the airplane if you are approaching in stable flight (crab compared to ground but airplane doesn’t know that. It’s bad technique to fly cross control for final. Cross control is fed in as needed when in the final couple of feet. Now if your high on final, sure, slip to get down and slip in the direction as indicated by the wind direction.

      @@stlmusicI think your getting mixed up between a the two slips the difference between a side slip and a forward slip there totally different one is for rapid altitude loss at a certain speed and a forward slip is for directional control in a crosswind

      @@wreckum56 both the same thing. Dislike it when I hear incorrect information. The internet is full of it incorrect information. Just look up downwind turns. If you want to slip all the way in, keep doing it if your comfortable with it.
