Hola Alberto. Your video shows off the best aspects of this little town. The steps up to the Templo del Calvario/San Felipe Ixtacuixtla are quite colorful. Are the orange-pink plants along the sides of the stairs buganvilla? The church interior was too dark for me to be able to discern the altar details. Is it a gilded retablo? How bout the transept altars? Gilded retablos? I couldn't tell. The facade is rather eclectic in style, with the tile work possibly influenced by the churches in the neighboring Puebla. The church of San Francisco must have had a very small convento. I don't recognize it as one of the major Franciscan houses. The early Franciscan conventos, besides Tlaxcala, were Tizatlan and Atlihuetzia. The church facade is really plain too, although the Franciscans were not much for ornamentation. They left that to the Agustinians and especially to the Dominicans and later the Jesuits. Your recent video on Tepotzotlan is testament to that. The dome would probably been added in the 18th century, give or take a decade or two. Perhaps this was originally intended as a visita but was elevated to a convento out of need as the number of friars became sufficient to maintain additional conventos. The left transept of San Francisco has a gilded churrigueresque retablo with estipite columns from the 18th century, while the right transept gilded retablo, with its spiral solomonic columns, appears to be 17th century. I hope whoever is restoring San Felipe has the funds to do a good job. It will probably have a modern look. Gilded retablo makers are in very short supply. I doubt it will even rival Tlalpujahua, an unusually successful post-colonial remodel. Let's hope for the best. Hello to Adriana. Stay well.
Hello William, yes it is a bougainvillea although in Mexico in some places they also call it an azalea. Unfortunately, we entered the church seconds before starting the ceremony and we could not get closer to the altarpieces. In addition, they had the lights off. It is a very small and simple church. What gives it color is the painted exterior on its stairs. In fact, it is a place they choose to go to take the wedding photo or some special event.
