    35hz at the bottom is compared to most devices more like a woofer than a sub. This is what I find a little problematic with the shaky term sub woofer, as some totally don't sub. :)
    Most 3 way standmounts and floorstanders go lower, like 22hz for a standmount and even have some more room below. I would consider buying a regular woofer sold as a sub a waste of money, even when it would have tight bass, because as a sub it needs a sub.
    I haven't tested the other ones mentioned but I would say that the B&W Asw608 is awesome bang for buck. It is a serious sub in probably the smallest possible form factor. It is heavy for its size and has a really tight bass and loads of options.

    Bought this 2 months ago to throw in home office. Used included RCA wires to hook up to my old Avr X 1000 Denon receiver. The connections on the sub twisted off as I tried to plug them in. Needless to say put it right back into box and sent it back. Picked up the Monoprice instead.

  • @sidesup8286

    A gallon of milk weighs 8 pounds also. I love milk. I can drink half a subwoofer in an evening. The woofer in that obviously doesn't have a very heavy magnet. I had an expensive Scan Speak tweeter that had an 8 pound magnet, and it was a tweeter. A good magnet is good for transient response. I used to like to play a selection that had someone playing a triangle real fast. The heavy Scan Speak tweeter was the only one that could keep up with such fast playing and complex harmonics. Speakers with bosomy ill defined bass should at least be tried elevated off the floor several inches and away from corners. Randy didn't mention if this is a Chinese product. If you don't know how to internally brace the cabinet or make the cabinet into a transmission line bass enclosure like I do, then you might be stuck. Muddy bass is usually mostly due to the enclosure needing to be more inert, otherwise there's a problem with too many cabinet resonances. If too small a magnet is used on a driver, don't expect state of the art transient response either.

    There is a downfiring version. I thinks it's better. I have this side firing one and it's not that bad for small systems, PC, small room, small garage, etc. I put polyfill in it and have it sounding tighter and it's not sloppy. You don't need a lot of volume on it otherwise it distorts quickly and is sloppy. I was surprised how low it needs to be. I may put a Dayton driver in it.

    Here is the thing to remember about subs, you are paying for a large driver that needs a stiffer cabinet than bookshelves, and it has a power amp built in. That just can't be done well for cheap. In my opinion, you should generally spend at least as much on your sub as you speakers to get similar quality.

    Hey Randy thanks for your honesty with this review, and lets bring some honesty to Amazon Music and why they keep removing music from the paid library. I was an Amazon Music fan paying for Family UHD, but my playlists are dwindling to nothing, and even if I purchase the songs, they still aren't available on anything more than mp3 quality (even if they were UHD when they were still in the streaming library - this has me finding all my lost tracks on Spotify. Such a narrow 6" sub looks catered to the soundbar market - probably tailored to home theatre use, with a c. 5 dB boost at 50 Hz per "Movie" mode of yore. This could probably be extended downward for better music listening via some added cone mass, e.g. a thumbnail sized daub of Blutack. The Monoprice 8" sub looks to have the customary large diameter, thick, weighty "dustcap" for added cone mass.
    Thanks for the honest review, it's probably a flubby "one note" sub as far as musicality is concerned.

    Randy, I finally stopped laughing enough to comment on this video. 2 hours of laughing can be hard on the body. But I watched it again anyway. And again and again.
    All of that aside, the integration of digital (with built-in DAC, I assume), analog, and Bluetooth into an El Cheapo powered speaker-especially a sub-is the kind of "Why not?" tech fusion that's going on right now, mainly under the "mainstream" radar.
    Who cares that the actual loudspeaker engineering is mostly nonexistent? That's easy to improve on...especially starting at this level. It's the tradition-shattering mash-up that earns Bestisan a gold star in first grade. Bravo.

    Of all the speakers one might buy, I think subwoofers are the least crucial for spending a lot of money. The narrow band that a subwoofer covers can be handled by a cheap subwoofer more than a full range can be handled by a cheap speaker. My opinion.

    • @biteme263
      @biteme263 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say it is the opposite actually. A good well designed subwoofer is actually hard to do on the cheap. It requires a larger/better driver, a properly designed and braced cabinet, well designed port and its own amp with decent power. Not to mention the crossover and other features you might want. A bookshelf speaker would be far easier to make on the cheap. And I think center channel speakers are WAAY over priced too. There is simply no reason a center channel should cost twice as much as a pair of bookshelfs which some do.

    Hi Randy! What if I want a home theater that can sound good at reasonably low volume? Half of the time we watch movies the kids are asleep. Will regular 5.25” bookshelfs do fine or I should look at smaller speakers? You have like less than 12 kids, as you mentioned, so you must know. Thank you.

    • @cheapaudioman
      @cheapaudioman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For sure. Properly crossed over, 5 1/4” drivers can deliver in big rooms even at reasonable levels. Once you limit the bass from the smaller speakers they can really surprise you as far as how they perform

    • @biteme263
      @biteme263 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to watch movies at low volumes and not bother people but still want bass effects look into some bass shaker transducers and a separate amp, like a plate amp for a diy subwoofer. You can get them at parts express. It isn't the same as a subwoofer but it comes pretty close and the effect is pretty cool. They are a little tricky to get crossed over correctly and dialed in but its worth it in the end. It will get you into that 20 hz rumble zone without shaking the whole house. I used to use them in my home theater set up but now I use them for headphone set up. They are awesome paired with headphones. They work really well in cars too. That is what I think they are mostly marketed for I think. Which makes sense since mine are 4 ohm drivers.

    I'm a muscian who busks. I'm looking for a small battery powered speaker to reproduce bass frequencies for my stereo rig. I've used aux in on several bluetooth speakers but oddly, had latency issues with several. I already use two small battery powered acoustic amps for the mids. Using a small Tascam D60 4 track camera audio recorder as a mixer/ recorder. Need a sub for kick drum and bass frequencies down to 50 or 60hz minimum. Lower is better, 'cause I also rock a Volca bass synth. Entire rig needs to fit on my bike's rack in a small duffle bag. Any recomendations? Thanks!

This rig isnt about melting faces. I've got a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier for that, lol... Also have a pair of Hartke ACR 5 50 watt acoustic combo amps. They sound great, but are like bags of cement to lug around, (very solid - Hartke is famous for their bass guitar speaker cabs) and require AC power. This is a "fly rig" small, light and portable - Highs are covered - just needs a little low end grunt to hold down the fort. I have become quite sceptical about subwoofers, as two out of three I have/have had are humming. I currently have a System Audio one stored because of the humming. The amp in it has been changed twice without any improvement. The supplier says it is supposed to be this way. Many years ago I purchased a Paradigm sub, which the shop took back due to the hum. After that I got a cheap Jamo sub which has a hum level I can live with (masked by any minimal background sound). I have tried all advice I can find without any improvement to the (by my standards expensive) System Audio, so the last resort is to try to find an alternative power amp for it, but who knows if that one will hum as well...

      @brandonbrodbeck6688 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had 2. Subs one was expensive for me around 600 and one was around 200. The expensive one would hum unless it was at or below the crossover range I had put in the receiver for the speakers to be. Wasn't anything bad. I was the only one that could tell. Was just wierd that after playing around with it it was exactly at that level each time.

      I'm currently starting to hear the same problem with an ancient Polk PSW10 next to my desk. Nothing else has changed. Pretty sure it's an internal power suppply filter issue. It exactly aligns with startup of the house furnace blower. It sounds like almost pure 60 Hz. Usually, I expect there to be a ton of 120 Hz and 180 Hz buzz in power supply issues.
      Let's think... should I buy a PSAudio $6,000 power line regenerator, or should I repurpose the PSW10 as a buoy anchor...?

      Most subwoofers have speaker in and out plugs for that purpose. The sub then does the bass management. Look for videos on the subject, there are plenty out there.
      Shop for subs in your price range and then look up the owners manual online and that will explain how that particular sub need to be connected. Good luck!!
