    Also funny that you recommend watching a lot of English, Australian, and American TV shows to study English because you can follow the subtitles.. yet with trying to learn Cantonese, no one seems to write the subtitles in 口語 and instead write it in 書面語 and then wonder why ABCs, CBCs, and BBCs are not very literate or don't have good speaking skills.
    I think there should be a movement to change and support this for the future of Cantonese learners.

    • @MrMilanoLau
      @MrMilanoLau 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, if you watch HK movies, you will find that a lot of the subtitles are not in standard Chinese, but in Cantonese. However, to me, it is quite weird. If one speaks Cantonese, he / she does not need to read the subtitles. For those who do not speak Cantonese, they cannot understand the subtitles. Just don't know what those Cantonese subtitles are for.

    • @puccarts
      @puccarts 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrMilanoLau I guess it's the difference between a 'closed caption' subtitle and translated subtitles. If you know any HK movies with subtitles in Cantonese please let me know! I only found subtitles for God of Gamblers.. and I'd like to find more. I think that for those who don't speak Cantonese, but do speak a variety of Chinese (Mandarin, or other dialects) it would be easier for them to learn Cantonese through exposure with BOTH audio and written content, and not just audio content. This way, you could pause the video, and look up the characters that are unknown to you; it gives you a base to look back on.. instead of just guessing what the speaker might be saying. It would also make it much easier to preserve the Cantonese language (writing it down is a form of preservation.) Having those subtitles are there for a more accurate visual representation of what was said in that movie.

      So for encore and entree both have stress on first syllable. But for ensuite, the stress is not on the first syllable.

    • @elaine34567
      @elaine34567 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@roverwl2068 thanks. But I have to disagree with you. The stress for ensuite is on the second syllable. That's how it's pronounced and that's what I learned since my time in Canada. Only recently I learned it's pronounced "differently" thanks to more TH-camrs. I also checked Oxford, Cambridge, and Merriam Webster dictionaries. You can see where the ' is placed for words ensuite, entree, and encore respectively. How we pronounce a word is mainly coming from our teachers when we first learned English, then the people surrounding us are most influential as we grow up. Of course if someone pronounce ensuite with the stress on the first syllable I am not going to bite. Likewise if someone pronounce ensuite correctly with the stress on second syllable please respect and don't bite because that's how it should be pronounced.

    Rice isn't necessarily an uncountable noun like "the sunshine" would be; when speaking of rice you usually use it in terms of what I believe is a collective noun. (Like how a few sheep is plural for a single sheep.) When you want to make 'rice' a singular noun, you use "a grain of rice", and "grains of rice" for the plural form, which would be similar to 一粒米.
    It's 3 chicken combos, not 3 chicken combo.
    I don't have a linguistic major but I'm a native English speaker. Hope this helps. (Btw, Pur-CHASE is just just wrong; if I would have a hard time understanding someone if they just dropped that on me in conversation.. it would take me a few moments to realize they meant PURchase.)
    Overall, great video :)

    • @pwong802
      @pwong802 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In fact, in Hong Kong, people have a lot of problems of stress placement. Your example of the word "purchase" is a prototypical one. Other similar examples include: meCHAnism and memBRANE (where the main stress is erroneously shifted to the second syllable). Thanks for your sharing. : )

    • @puccarts
      @puccarts 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pwong802 If you want to say it's correct using HongKong English, then yes that's fine. I can understand that, and it can be understood as a dialect or regional quirk. However, most, if not all, native English speakers outside of Hong Kong would argue that this is simply wrong.
      Also, I know I'm being a grammar-nazi here (this is a video about being nitpicky, after all), but your first sentence should be "people have a lot of problems with stress placement."
      Anyways, I encourage everyone to try and learn English, or try and better their English. And even if you have the "wrong" stress or pronunciation in a word, there are many native English speakers that would be happy to help you increase your level of English :) My Cantonese also has a long way to go but I also know I shouldn't be imposing my anglicized pronunciation like "BOK choi" instead of 白菜 lol.. Imagine if I did that and then argued with a local saying that BOK choi is correct.. lol XD.. I know I'd get some crazy stares.. It's a similar thing.

    • @joeywan8550
      @joeywan8550 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Puccarts, both “rice” and “sunshine” are uncountable nouns. There are different types of uncountable nouns (like abstract nouns, amorphous objects, physical objects that are numerous and very small, etc). Collective nouns and uncountable nouns are two different types of nouns and shouldn’t be confused.
      In the example you provided, “a grain of rice” and “grains of rice”, the noun “grain” is singular whereas “grains” is plural. The word rice remains uncountable (therefore, no plural form).

    • @puccarts
      @puccarts 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joeywan8550 Great answer, I was thinking of that myself, actually. I thought in terms of this video, that I could draw parallels to using the counter 一粒 to represent a grain and simply saying you are able to count the singular and plural version.
      I also always thought sheep (singular) was just the same spelling as sheep (plural) instead of being an uncountable noun, they simply had the same spelling and pronunciation as the plural version. (Would this make 'sheep' uncountable? What will I have to do at night?! jk..) I assumed this was the same for 'rice'.
      Anyways, as I said earlier, I'm not a linguistics major, and what you wrote makes sense so thanks for the correction.
