- The antibiotic doxycycline belongs in the tetracycline family and treats a wide range of infections ranging from the mundane to the unusual. This broad spectrum drug treats acne, rosacea and staphylococcal abscesses equally as well as some atypical pneumonias, Chlamydia, early Lyme disease, cat scratch disease, syphilis and spotted fever. It even prevents cutaneous or inhalation anthrax after exposure and may be used as prophylaxis against malaria for short term travel to endemic areas.
Unfortunately excessive prescriptions of antibiotics have allowed bacteria to become increasingly resistant to medication. Doxycycline once provided reliable treatment for infections due to Strep. pneumoniae, Shigella and the organism responsible for gonorrhea. This no longer is true.
Doxycycline acts as a bacteriostatic drug often wounding or slowing bacterial growth rather than outright killing them. For this reason, combination therapy with antibiotics in the penicillin family should be avoided. Penicillin and derivatives such as amoxicillin and ampicillin actually are bactericidal and kill the bacteria.
Two major forms of doxycycline exist: doxycycline hyclate and doxycycline monohydrate. Brand names and generic preparations of each are available. While some differences exist regarding solubility, once absorption occurs, both provide the same active ingredient. Selection among the options should be based on price, availability and compatibility with one’s system.
Due to a combination of factors including manufacturing issues, 2013 marked the year when the price of generic doxycycline soared. The wholesale commercial price of a bottle of 500 pills that previously sold for $20 witnessed a price escalation to nearly $1800. Obviously the retail price and copay for the consumer at the pharmacy spiraled upward in parallel. While the price eventually moderated, it remains considerably more expensive than during the early 2000s.
Pharmaceutical companies continue to charge an amazing premium for their iteration of much cheaper generics. For example with a discount coupon from goodrx.com the cash price for a 10 day course of Vibramycin is about $250, Monodox $400, Doryx $1300, Oracea $725 and Acticlate $740. With much less expensive, equally effective alternative therapy so readily available, the reason for such continued price gouging remains unanswered.

I literally threw up after taking it in a empty stomach. Then after the course it completely screwed up my stomach and now I have massive IBS symptoms over it that I can't kick now. I recommend not taking it if you don't need to.
Poor US patients. In Australia we pay maximum about $16-20 for 30 pills. That’s about $13.9 USD. Maximum!

I had a MRSA, MSSA, and Diphtheria infection in my spine, and was on several other antibiotics that didn't seem to work - then they gave me Doxycycline and it was like a wonder drug! I went from the doctors thinking I was going to die soon (as the infection was out of control), to feeling better in around 6 months!

Very informative, thank you Dr. Landow. It's good to know that Doxycycline doesn't kill bacteria but still allows the body's immune system to work normally, giving the body a chance to fight. I'm a firm believer that antibiotics are a bad thing if prescribed for every little infection that happens along. My theory being the body's immune system needs to be "exercised" occasionally to remain strong, which isn't a bad thing. Only as a last resort when there is a real danger, not just discomfort, should they be used. That's my opinion anyway. Again, thank you for the information.

@@adriannaarena0414 No, just coffee water. About 16 oz. I have always typically skipped breakfast my whole life so i didnt eat anything with it.
I was on it daily for years and years and the nausea side effect never went away, but if I drank 16 oz. Of liquid then i would get nausea.
You can split the pill in half with a pill cutter. Take half a pill in the morning amd themother half at evening. That will probably not make you nauseas.

Just started taking today for RMSF that I found out I had in September… is it too late? This stuff is scary but so is RMSF. I’m exhausted - any advice greatly appreciated!
What about Opoids such as Hydrocodone (Vicodin)or Oxycontin (Oxycodone ) and Benzodiazepines such as Alprazoelam (Xanax) Klonopin (Clonazepam) Restril (Temezepam) LOrazepam (Atavain) and Diazepam (Valium) effect this,meds. I Think opiod and Benzos also interact with the is med well.
What about effects on the brain? Cause I’m starting to loose focus and if that starts to go permanent then I ain’t taking this
God I m so glad to see this comment because i have the exact same problem : in class I can focus on what the teachers say and I focus on people talking behind me, I even loose focus in simple conversations with friends it s so annoying

No your body is detoxing hang in there, don’t take no suppressing drugs to make you feel better quickly let it go away on its own
maybe if you can reduce the dose or milligrams and or drink a lot of water or juices to dilute the dose

Of course it can, depends on your body. I took it 2xs a day for 10 days and it messed me up, felt high, drugged, sensitive to bright lights, spaced out. Throat felt tight, head pressure, feeling confused. This is just me and took a while for me to get back better. Also this was actually the first antibiotic I ever took in my life so maybe my body couldn’t take it. Best of luck

I wouldn't even reccomend taking doxycline for clear skin just get a refferal from a dermatologist because doctors these days never explain the side effects. I've went on doxycline and the first day I got the worst headache and blurred vision. Scared me.
This is my 4th day taking doxycycline, dermatologist prescribed it for my back acne, honestly, worst side effects, I’m suppose to take it for 2 months, thinking not to at this point

@@seds94 I would stop taking. And go to doctor or Er and tell them what it’s doing. They’ll switch you to cephlexin or what ever you need. I’m not a doctor and I can’t recommend anything but my girlfriend and plenty of others have gone through it after I’ve looked into it. Lay off dairy, it helps a lot.

Mr Dr prescribed me Doxycycline monohydrate and I had an old prescriptions Doxycycline hyclate that I for got to throw away. I accidentally took a hyclate while taking the monohydrate will it hurt me??

I don't think antibiotics cause bacteria to become resistant, but antibiotic use might select inadvertently for non-susceptible strains. Archaeologists have unearthed multi thousand year old mummie, and found resistant bacteria in the gut. It might be some strains weren't susceptible in the first place.
