"Contrary to popular belief, it's not a competition out here. We watch and respect each other's work." I love that so much and wish everyone could adopt that mindset. It takes all the joy out of it if you're trying to be the best in the world.Just try to be better than you were yesterday and you're good to go!
Right on brother, it's not about trying to play like, or copy anyone else...Its about making it a point to Express what you want...And have fun doing it
It takes a REAL individual to state “watch other videos”. To me that is INTEGRITY similar to an honest salesman versus a dishonest one. This is why I follow you and by 12/31 I want to be able to have full control of the hi hat with all the amazing beats it can make. Currently practicing to Another Brick on the Wall and that itself has helped me some.
At 66 years old,all about the groove. Nothing inspires me more than listing to people like Jeff porcaro, Bernard Purdie,or John Bonham. What they can do with a bass drum with one foot,is just incredible. I will be setting the double pedal aside and concentrating with a single pedal this year.As long as that double pedal is set up I find myself getting side tracked. So my practice setup will be a snare, hihat, and single pedal on my kick.No distraction with all the fluff, and got me a recorder to track my progress. At the end of the day,the recorder don't lie. Thank you sir,for sharing your videos with us drummers.
Rob's channel is excellent for getting real practical instruction. Doesn't matter what level you are, his instructions can be used. I think the secret is that he keeps it simple.
I can personally vouch for the Rob’s Pocket Builder play-along album. I bought it on Amazon, downloaded it onto my iPad, and it’s now an important part of my daily practice routine. There’s 10 tracks in it. Every day I pick up a random track and play along with it. Awesome stuff. It’s been a couple of months now, and I feel like my grooves are getting tighter and more precise. I happen to be a firm believer in the “tighter pocket drummers are more wanted than fancy chops drummers” ideology.
I played along to this album yesterday and today after watching this video and seeing your comment. It is so much fun, and the percussion in some of the songs really help to guide you along!
I'd like to add that it always makes me smile when I see drummers commenting on each others channels, reminds you that it is a community and a generally pretty friendly, supportive one at that. And that's something we all need right now.
Well for this year I decided that I will not give up no matter how many times I'll mess up. I picked up drums without thinking much of it, just to try and challenge myself. But I really love drumming now. It's very challenging physically, but strangely relaxing for the mind. I love it. I want to enjoy it even more.
I'm gonna invest in some merch because you are literally my teacher. I am 37. I started playing when I was around 16 but I have had long gaps where I haven't been playing. I have picked back up my journey on the kit and this is my go to channel. I am suggesting you to friends. My goals are to sharpen my coordination, develop my speed and find my way back to the groove. You are playing a huge part in my journey. Thank you.
Your the man ...started after over 35 yrs love your advice is awesome learning again I'm 61 yrs old with your help after a month with my ekit i feel like a teen again
Man, when i first discovered you last year, i subscribed after watching 1 video, and i have no regret. You quickly became my favorite drummer, and i learned more last year than i learned in the three years that i had been playing before. You introduced me to jazz and fusion and the great performers in those genres. As well as yamaha drums and evans drumheads man i hope i can get my hands on a kit like yours one day. I just want to thank you for everything i have learned, and im looking forward to learning much more in '21. Happy new year Rob!
Rob, Thanks again as always your straight forward, no nonsense advice which has helped me a lot. The one thing I haven't done yet is get a practice pad. I plan to buy one today! I look forward to your videos this year and improve my game
Good advice for all level drummers. My goal this year is to improve my limb independence, the touch and sound I play grooves in my drums and more knowledge in recording topics. Thanks from Puerto Rico.
Gotta say, I watch and follow several drum channels, this one is my favorite! I feel like there's information for every level of drummer on here. I've been playing in total, little over 2 years. Been playing at my church for the past 18 months, and the majority of "useful to me" content came from here, so thank you Rob for helping me get started!!
So inspiringI’ve been playing drums since I was five years old just picking up again after a two-year hiatus love your channel love your message keep up the great work thank you
I've been playing for 1 year now and what you said about the pad is so true, I was grinding on the pad for a few months and that is where the bulk of my progress and technique and time have come from, these days I don't so much because I can play a lot more freely on the kit but that stems from pad work but I find I'm starting to get stale on the kit so for 2021 I'll get back on the pad a lot more and freshen up on my everything and your pad videos have been so Important so thanks my man for everything
Rob, thanks for all the advises & tips. Always nice to get some new objectives early in the year. 2021 goals is to improve independence & speed, as well as shuffle groove. I'll stay tune to the channel. Best from France
Can't thank you enough, Rob. Super inspiring and a great way to get the year started. As far as 2020 was concerned, I ended up spending a TON of time on the pad. I now feel like my hands are at a place that I never even knew existed in all my years of drumming thanks to guys like you, Marcus Hawkins, Austin Burcham and Juan "Carlito" Mendoza. On the other hand, I didn't spend nearly enough time on my kit. I wasn't feeling inspired, especially after all the gigs went away. So I'm hoping I can tip the scales a little bit this year: Spend more time in the practice room, on the kit, playing with some tracks. Happy New Year.
Rob thats exactly what I do got a drum room and Roland TD17KL and record. And play to Jazz and fusion mostly in 70s i did Old Jazz and alot of rock , Zepplin , Sabbath, and Santana etc. Now at 66yrs old Jazz and Fusion.Rudiments for at least an hour. And of course I watch you and Austin and Todd and Simon .
I've been doing many of these things already ... But the Basic fundamentals tips is probably the one that will improve my playing most.. I'm pretty sure of it! Thanks a bunch my friend for your help on my journey!
Hi Rob, I've a[ways thought that no one teacher can teach a person everything about a given subject and you have exemplified that in this video by recommending us to watch others. I'm loving the new lighting in studio and am looking forward to your tips and lessons for us this year. For me, all I want to do is to be able to play along with friends and have fun and to know that maybe I'm too shabby a player. I wish you all the best,Rob,and keep them videos coming.
Thanks for all you do Rob. Really appreciate your collegial approach to working with and viewing others. That is the hallmark of a true teacher and mentor and is what sets you apart. Great work! BTW, that is a SERIOUSLY fine looking kit.
I decided that this is the year to learn to read notation. It's tough and it's made me get real and a lot more humble about my own ability but it's so rewarding, even just managing to play the most basic exercises in Ted Reeds Syncopation book feels like proper progress. And I would like to say a big thank you for all the content you've put out, Rob, all been really helpful and got me back in to drumming again.
Hey Rob, My new years resolution is to tackle the traditional grip. Your videos are really keeping me inspired and motivated through this lockdown in the UK. Also it goes without saying that they are the best and most honest lessons out there. Cheers, man!
I think you are 100% right on everything you said. Especially play along with music. One crazy thing I found is my 3 year old niece wanted to play drums like her uncle (me). So she now has a pink drum kit and im working with her on it and by me teaching her the basic things makes me work on the basic things and its helped me. 2020 was a crazy year for sure but it did give us more time with the kit didn't it?
Always appreciate your insights. I've been a drummer at heart since I was 10 (thanks Peter Chris), but got my first kit last year. You've been the guy who "says the right thing" for me, and makes it click. This video made me realize how I've been doing the right thing (with the possible exception of enough work on the pad). This year, I'll be taking your advice on the basics even though my temptation is always to riff over the top of a simple song I like, just for fun. So yeah... more ideas to make padwork fun & more exercises for separation of the major extremities on the kit, please! :D
Cheers Rob and happy new year. What would I like to have achieved by the end of the year? Well, a gig with my band in front of friends and family and having a blast! Missed gigging soooooo much.
My drumming goal is to learn to think more like a musician. Focus on musicality, feel, and the space between the notes. I think it would be cool if you made more videos about how less is more and how to not clash with other musicians. When it comes to grooves, I'd like to learn more about "why" than "how".
Thanks a lot Rob for the inspiration. I played drums on and off in the nineties, then, for a number of reasons I stopped. I started watching your channel only a couple of months ago and with convincing cool videos, your great attitude and wit you played a major part in making me pick up drumming again after 20 years of idling. I believe I can still make it @50+ :) Excuse me now, but I am going to unbox my old Yamaha kit...cheers man!
I once watched a video a various drummers giving instruction which included Dave weckl. And he said this is not a sporting event or a competition. This is music. It's all good. Completely ties into what Rob said about the drumming community supporting each other. I think that is so totally awesome! Also what he said about focusing on the basics more than the fancy stuff. I have a tendency to do just the opposite so I guess I need some discipline in that area. Also in the area of recording myself. I have a huge phobia about it. Fear of what I'm going to hear about myself. That's a tough one. And you gave me an idea Rob. I have a metronome in my e kit built in but I need one on my phone also. Think I'm going to go find a metronome app right now. Thanks
I’m here to learn. I’ve made an end goal for the year. Thank you Rob for teaching the beginner. I’m sure it may be tedious for an advanced drummer but, slow and good camera angles with advice and technique are key to me. Thanks again man!
I think getting out of my rut, I've been in the last 15 years, would be something I long for. Getting back to the fun of playing drums again. The first 10-12 years of my drumming was fun. I could notice my small improovements. Then I got stuck on a plateau for about 2-3 years, wich led to my rut, and I didn't play at all for almost 3 years, when I did surgury on both wrists. It was quite recently when I picked up drumming again. I've lost a lot of hand teqcnique and stamina.
I will definitely be recording myself more after watching this. It's simple and effective, but one of those things that it doesn't hurt to be reminded to do.
Thanks for another great video..! I watched you all thru 2020, and I lifted some good stuff from you...I'm a 30+ year player, and I still learn alot from watching yours, and other drum channels...This year, my goal is to have better stick rudiments, and better independence ..and yes I got me my first practice pad, in 25 years!! 👍
I'm a returning drummer. Ignored rudiments as a kid, but I was half decent for how little practice I did. I think if I actually had any idea how to stick at anything back then, I'd be disgusting now. This year, I want to get as solid as I can with the fundamentals. I want to really work on rudiments, and think about how to use them creatively in music. If I can afford it, I want to pick up a double bass pedal and try kicking them out too.
The last tip is one of the most important you'll ever heard; thank you Rob for every video you made 😁 In 2020 i made the best progress in my drumming and I'm on the way to get better this year ❤
Hey Rob, I watch other channels too but your's is my go to. Your lessons have already accelerated my progress more than any other online teacher. Your content is the most relevant and I enjoy the delivery. Please continue to give content on what helped you as an aspiring professional and avoid doing any reaction videos 😜. Thanks again, Elred
Honestly Rob your channel is one of the best. I'm always finding someone new like just last night I discovered Steve Holmes, good stuff over there too!
Happy New Year Rob and all aspiring drummers out there. Thank you for the tips. I actually got a practice pad for Christmas and after watching this I'm going to focus on pad work and film myself. Keep safe out there and once again, thanks.
Because you asked... I'd like to clean up my playing, become more polished. I can figure out how to play a lot of parts. But nailing it the way it sounds on the "radio" is another animal. Aside from not hitting the rims or my other stick. There's so many other aspects to nailing a part, feel, dynamics, dynamics between each drum. (I catch myself hitting snare too hard, bass drum too soft etc... Are there things you specifically thank about or do to "polish your act"? Thanks keep up the great work!
Great encouragement for 2021 and beyond. Learn so much on your channel. My drumming has improved because of your channel. Keep the content going and continue to inspire sir
I've been playing drums all my life since I was like 5. (I'm 16) the past 4 years I have started to take it more seriously. And try to progress. Somewhat serious, if I took it too serious i wouldn't do it and enjoy it. I jam with my cousin a great guitarist and sometimes a bassist when I can get one and that's my whole reason of practicing so i can play well with others. Anyways these past 4 years I have seen major progress. I think the main reason is the time I spend doing it whether I feel in a rut or am feeling really inspired I play. And o have seen myself play through what feels like a rut numerous times and that's inspiring too. So time is a major thing and the other is playing with music and learning songs. When I started I'd lean songs halfe assed and they were very simple songs. As I've gone the songs got more and more technical and challenging. I picked up a lot of techniques through learning songs I'd find out what I need to do to pull it off and I'd learn it. Now I can learn a song so fast and memorize it. The hardest songs to learn along my journey were fool in the rain by zeppelin and nobody weird like me by the chilli peppers. Check those out. Anyways my point is keep playing and you will watch yourself break through the barriers using consistancy. And keep challenging yourself and you will keep climbing up the latter.
I agree ROB / 90 percent of the time I don’t like the way I sound / I’m very critical of my play / have a hard time playing in front of people / kit has not been set up in more than 10 yrs. NEED A PRACTICE PAD & STICKS!!!!! Gotta go back to STICK CONTROL / back to square 1 / back to BASICS. THANKS ROB / WILLY CA 😎🥁😎
Hey Rob! Last year was tough but also the year I started playing the drums, and I took it seriously! I made a lot of improvements, especially because of you, so thank you for all your great content. My objective by the end of 2021 is to play Tom Sawyer by Rush! Greatings from Toulouse
Lockdown with beatdown. 👊💙 I live in an apartment. Or a flat as we call them in the uk. So I got an electronic kit. But my neighbours still hated me. So the bass player has become a better drummer in lockdown. He has a house. I’ve only played twice in 10 months. 😱🥶 Ah well. Such is life. Maybe the practice pad on a pillow is the way forward.
Thanks for your tips and exercises! Have been following you atleast two years, love your content! My 2021 main goals are to develop my weaker hand as good as possible and start practicing double bass drumming.
YES..........Record YOURSELF ...........you can use your LAPTOP with a cheap (overhead) mic that plugs into a USB port with an adapter...........less than $20.00 . Works great.......no ambient noise to worry about.
You and Steven Taylor are my practice bois. The slow breakdown of the beats that’sound impossible, Have helped my brain more than my hands. Plus I owe you for adding 30 bpm to my paradiddles In a month. 🙏🏼 it took year’s for me to get to 130bpm, and then I relaxed.. 😎. Thank you brother! From the bottom of my heart. 2021 is gonna be my greatest year on the drums yet!
What Carlos said!
I’ve learned so much about drum technique and good practice methods on your channel. Thank you!
Thanks for watchin, man 🤘🏾
Rob's channel is excellent for getting real practical instruction.
Nice. Thanks for pickin it up man 🙂
I played along to this album yesterday and today after watching this video and seeing your comment. It is so much fun, and the percussion in some of the songs really help to guide you along!
Rob Brown you are awesome man. Love what you said about community, other TH-cam channels and it’s not a competition. Always appreciate your insight!
Props to you for acknowledging the other teacher friends on the TH-cam Rob.
I'd like to add that it always makes me smile when I see drummers commenting on each others channels, reminds you that it is a community and a generally pretty friendly, supportive one at that. And that's something we all need right now.
Recording myself sometimes is...frustrating and confronting BUT ...a very important matter to improve myself.
My dad came in because I was recording drums for my band. And he said you have gotten better and I said. “All I have to say is Rob Brown”.
Well for this year I decided that I will not give up no matter how many times I'll mess up. I picked up drums without thinking much of it, just to try and challenge myself. But I really love drumming now. It's very challenging physically, but strangely relaxing for the mind. I love it. I want to enjoy it even more.
Bro, seriously a Stand up video Pure class man. .... specially during these times. Be safe and peace.
Thank you.
Nate is awesome to! 80/20. Love this channel to, no matter how much better I get I’m still always trying to learn something new ! 🎵🤘

This is the year I progress the most! I'm with you!
thanks for all your teaching rob :)

Rob Brown for Life Coach of the Year! 🙌
I'm in agreement with my fellow drummers.Your uniquely kind giving spirit sets you apart. You have become my teacher and now mentor.Super cool!✌
Can't thank you enough, Rob. Super inspiring and a great way to get the year started. As far as 2020 was concerned, I ended up spending a TON of time on the pad. As always, great advice again. Will be tuned in again this year as always. Best to ya brother. Let’s all stay healthy everyone. 🇨🇦👍🏼
I will definitely be recording myself more after watching this. It's simple and effective, but one of those things that it doesn't hurt to be reminded to do.
This is one of the best videos we've seen from you man, thanks for sharing! Jorge from Panama
Hi Rob, thank you for your highly instruccional videos, I've learnt a lot with them. Thanks
Rob you are an awesome teacher! Such a great mentor.
"Competitions are for horses, not for artists." (Bela Bartok) thnx Rob for everything!
🔥🥁🔥 Killer tips as always.
Thank you for reinforcing what I believe as well, I always go to basics and it has served me well - Excellent Video!

If I can afford it, I want to pick up a double bass pedal and try kicking them out too.
I'd really like to progress to playing in front of people again! That's pretty much my drumming goal for 2021. Keep up the good work Rob!
The last tip is one of the most important you'll ever heard; thank you Rob for every video you made 😁 In 2020 i made the best progress in my drumming and I'm on the way to get better this year ❤
valuable words man. thanks for all your effort in bringing real stuff!!!
Love this video, full of great advice. Esp about pad and kit work and sticking to basics.
Dude you are so awesome!! You’ve helped me so much and you’re videos are so entertaining 🎶❤️🎶
Good lawd...Don't you worry about THAT 🙄lol
Honestly Rob your channel is one of the best. I'm always finding someone new like just last night I discovered Steve Holmes, good stuff over there too!
Steve Holmes is a BEAST. His channel needs to blow up.
Happy New Year Rob and all aspiring drummers out there. Thank you for the tips. I actually got a practice pad for Christmas and after watching this I'm going to focus on pad work and film myself. Keep safe out there and once again, thanks.
Spot on! I came a long way in two years. Still a lot to learn.
Just started drumming about two months ago! I'm going to be practicing my timing and braking my right dominants. Thanks Rob 😁
You da man buddy! Thanks so much for the lessons
Like the upgrades to the studio man ! Thanks for the tips !
The most amazing teacher of Drums is back !! Happy 2021 Rob !! Happy to hear from you !!
Thank you for the inspiration coach Brown.
Hey Rob!
Last year was tough but also the year I started playing the drums, and I took it seriously!
I made a lot of improvements, especially because of you, so thank you for all your great content.
My objective by the end of 2021 is to play Tom Sawyer by Rush!
Greatings from Toulouse
TOULOUSE? Shout out to France. Tom Sawyer's a tall order but you've got plenty of time 🙂🤘🏾
Tom Sawyer is actually on my list. And I agree Tom Sawyer is one of the hardest rock songs to learn.
Lockdown with beatdown. 👊💙
I live in an apartment.
Or a flat as we call them in the uk.
So I got an electronic kit.
But my neighbours still hated me.
So the bass player has become a better drummer in lockdown.
He has a house.
I’ve only played twice in 10 months. 😱🥶
Ah well.
Such is life.
Maybe the practice pad on a pillow is the way forward.
Your lessons are outstanding ! Really thanks ! Realy
I enjoy your content rob, your approach is refreshing.
Thanks for your tips and exercises! Have been following you atleast two years, love your content! My 2021 main goals are to develop my weaker hand as good as possible and start practicing double bass drumming.
Hello Rob, You have very nice drum videos here , interesting content and topics.
Greetings from Warsaw , good health in these difficult times !

It's Stephen. At least spell the name right, BPMs, later 😎
@@krashboomboing is that really the point?....my bad though. Sorry to Stephen
