    Phil had been singing with Genesis for around 5 years years by the time of this performance, and had fronted four albums and a live album. He is an incredible drummer (as was Chester) The band were probably at their 'tightest' at this time, although they were distinctly moving away from prog rock. My favourite era of the band was 1976 - 1980 (A Trick of the tail - Duke)

    Collins, is a Paul McCartney/ Prince like talent. Dude can play an assortment of instruments. I love the early mid 80's version of Genesis. No reply at all, is my fave. Rutherford is a beast on bass on that track too. My short story of who inspired me, wasn't a song. Actually was a picture. 1982, Van Halens, Diver Down album. When I seen those 4 kicks and the wall of roto Tom's with all the long cylinders and the huge gong. I was in awe. Before that a basic trap set was my visual. I thought gee whiz...how in the hell can he hit all that? Then two years later hot for teacher. Now I know how he does. Haha! Bonzo, will always be my idol. But Alex, is who made me wanna pick up that first pair of 7A's, I ever had. Here's one to add to your arsenal....Artimus Pyle. The Joe Walsh, of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

    Hey Steve, Thanks for doing some Phil Collins drumming excellence!!
    When you first started this channel I subscribed immediately and was quietly (stealthily) waiting for you to sample some Phil Collins on the drums as I know that he gets both admired and crucified for his 80's pop output while many have no idea of his actual "since three years old drummer" origins and how few never understood just how phenomenal a drummer he was far before he reluctantly became a stand out vocalist.
    So here it finally came true and to my surprise Im hearing some pre-conceptions/bias against the prog of the 70's with a bit of dismissal attitude around that "dinosaur rock", "self indulgence" label that got applied to that style to make room for Punk at the time. WHAT???? Without a doubt there was some truth to all of that and while Punk did serve it's purpose of flushing the toilet so to speak I think you will find that in the long run the music of the Prog giants such as Genesis, King Crimsom, ELP, Yes, Jethro Tull and a few others will stand the test of time far better than any of the Punk music that had a Disco-like burst in the late 70's.
    Without a doubt there is some very dated throw away Prog output in the 70's but at the same time there is some cream of the crop Prog groups and albums that stand tall to a listen today that haven't dated an iota and will set you back in your seat IF you are willing to re-open your mind for a good solid listen.
    However, I do respect each's own personal taste in music so all is what it is. I really do feel you were fed an opinion at some point and adopted it as a generalization before you actually had a listen and made the decision yourself. So if you are willing, how about start with an album like Genesis' Duke to hear a Pop-Prog transition moment (and some killer drumming) and then venture carefully backward(if you dare).
    Not done yet... I should add that I never took a single drug to listen to a single note of Prog so please ditch that misperception as well.
    There I have had my rant....I feel much better now. Keep on tubing!!! And let's here some Progressive Rock! More Phil, More Bill Bruford and Carl Palmer etc etc.

      @TheCorrectAnswer56 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is a spot on comment. Seems like a nice guy and all, but he says he doesn’t like the song after literally talking through the entirety of it. You certainly don’t have to like 70s Genesis as it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but to dismiss it outright as self indulgent is insulting and proves you know nothing about it. Some prog rock definitely is, but Genesis is anything but self indulgent. They’ve always been about the song, not the playing which is why they attracted me as a fan.
      I also find it funny when people say how they know Phil Collin’s is a great drummer and then cite In The Air Tonight as the reason. 😂 they have no idea what they’ve never heard from him.
      I’ve also never taken a single drug when listening to Genesis music. The music itself is my drug. Some people will never understand what that’s like and I feel bad for them. But yes, please ditch the stereotype that we’re all high as a kite and our brains are fried. That’s just plain ignorance shining through.
      There’s my little rant.

    This was a medley ending to the 1976 Trick of the Tail album, Collins first singing album w Genesis. His drumming on all the “pre-pop” records was unreal. Worth a study. I loved that you played this but I did cringe when you said you preferred the later pop records better. I think if you gave it the time you’d change your mind. In my opinion Duke was their last great album. ✌️ Peace brother.

    You are correct that Progressive Rock caused its own fall from favour, via the Punk revolution against Prog's self-indulgence. However, it was mostly ELP and Yes, especially the former, whose musical masturbations yanked the patience of all but their most ardent lovers -- I mean, their most loyal fans. Genesis saw the writing on the wall by 1978 and realised that they could and should sell out -- I mean, progress to shorter songs. Genesis started trying for shorter Pop songs as early as 1973, when they wrote and Peter Gabriel sang "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)". It was a very catchy and fun tune yet it failed to become a hit.
    Then, their massive concept album, the double-record set of "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", contained mainly shorter Rock songs and ballads, in 1974. Gabriel conceived the idea during the band's first visit to New York City, where they caught sight and smell of their first Punk / Proto-Punk Rockers. The point is that Genesis were ready to move on to more "normal" music by the time of the Punk explosion.
    Furthermore, even in the heat of their Progressive creativity, the members of Genesis always wrote and played in service of the songs, whereas the guys in ELP and Yes, among others, wrote songs in slavish service to their musicianship. This is what caused the next generation to rebel. This, and of course poverty and government ineptitude.

    On the 1973 album "Selling England by the Pound", in the song "Cinema Show", the instrumental section has Phil Collins being powerful yet at the same time delicate and very intricate. If you listen via headphones, it sounds like Phil has five hands.
    I always assumed that they must have multi-tracked the drums, but then I saw the Genesis recreation band called The Musical Box, and their drummer was playing all of those intricate details, AND the big, strong hits, all by himself. And I realized that Phil had developed his skills to that great a degree by the early 1970s. Neil Peart himself has said that when he heard this album, he realized that he was going to have to "up his game" and challenge himself to become a better drummer -- because of what Phil Collins was doing.

The "full" band minus PG played and the Los Endos recording is definitive. The story goes that when Phil auditioned for Genesis as a drummer, he just tagged along with a mate who was auditioning as a guitarist. The audition was taking place in the grounds of a posh house. I think it was Rutherford's parents house, because the band were basically a bunch of privately educated posh kids. Anyway, there is Phil, who came from much leaner roots, swinging his legs off the side of the swimming pool, whilst listening to all the other drummers doing the sane set routine. When it was his turn Peter Gabriel, remembered how he shuffled in, in a very understated matter of fact way. And how he sat down at the drum kit, made a couple of adjustments, and then just belted out the routine backwards!! How cool is that? Although he was not musically trained, he had a natural god given gift. The band were blown away, and the rest is history.

I was around 3 during the But Seriously and We Can't Dance tours, and 8 by the time Genesis final album Calling All Stations came out (sadly without Phil, but still a great album with a drum solo!) Check out "The Dividing Line" song, one of their best drum-focused songs of all time, and it was on their LAST album, drummed by Nir Z who replaced Phil on drums.

    You NEED to listen to get into his 70's Genesis prog work. Odd times out the wazoo!! Selling England By the Pound is my Go To. LOS ENDOS is from Trick Of The Tail, the first album AFTER Peter left and Phil taking over as front man. The overall tone was infectious and beautiful and his drumming was always top notch. I copied and pasted from a spot from a 1997 interview by William F. Miller:
    “Los Endos” was a tune composed around a pattern that Phil “borrowed” from rhythm-master Airto. “I got that beat almost directly from a Santana album that Airto played on called Borboletta,” Phil admits. “I don’t think it was one of Santana’s most popular records, but I was really inspired by it.”
    “Los Endos” doesn’t quite sound like a tune you’d hear on a Santana record. (“I was trying for that feel,” Phil jokes.) Yes, there’s that salsa-esque bass drum pattern, but it’s played at such a hyper-space speed that the feel ends up being much more aggressive. The pattern Phil plays with his hands is blistering."

    How in the world can you say you prefer their pop songs to this? Especially as a drum teacher, don't get it. Admittedly I'm a dyed in the wool prog rock fan but this is one of their finest arrangements in their history (although there are better clips available of it). I'm disappointed in your reaction even having claimed to like his In The Air Tonight sound as an early music memory. I have been loving drums and drummers for well over 60 years as a music lover.

    If you are a drummer, especially a professional drummer, you are doing yourself a huge disservice by not being aware of Phil Collins’ drumming work with Genesis in the 70s. You’ll also realize that the In The Air Tonight drum fill (it’s not a solo) is just another day at the office for Phil. He was one of the most creative, inventive, groovy drummers there ever was and he obviously had a great pop sensibility on top of it.

      Junkdrummer TV wasn’t necessarily directed at you since you are obviously a drummer and like Phil Collin’s. But I think it’s important to be aware of the greats and what they did to become great if you are looking to improve as a drummer, which we all should be. I don’t particularly like jazz music, but I am certainly familiar with Buddy Rich’s work. All I mean to say is don’t dismiss Phil Collin’s work in the 70s just because you have your preconceptions about prog rock. You are seriously overlooking some incredible drumming that will stick with you forever.

    This was five years (and four studio albums) after Peter Gabriel left, and already very much into the "pop" Genesis era, at least where radio play was concerned. They'd already had two big radio hits in the States by this time (one off the album they were touring here, one of the one before). They never stopped being an amazing live band, this tour being a case in point, but for me their recorded output really started to suffer after the Duke album. It's strange to me that, as a drummer, you aren't that familiar with Phil's seventies work with Genesis. For my money, that's where most of his finest playing is to be found. I'm no Gabriel era purist, but I do much prefer the seventies Genesis stuff, on the whole. Half of his solo stuff used drum machines. Not something I condemn out of hand, but certainly a lot less interesting from a drumming perspective. Each to their own, I suppose. They certainly made a lot more money for themselves during the following years.
    Also, I'd take issue with the notion that nobody tried to take the Collins drum sound. There was a period there in the 80s when you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing that gated reverb drum sound. Of course, half the time the records we were hearing had been produced by Collins in any case! Everyone from Eric Clapton to Adam Ant had Phil on the desk, but a hell of a lot of people tried to copy that sound back then too (interestingly, it actually first appeared on a Peter Gabriel record, not a Collins set). It often shows up as a kit selection on modern drum machines and sequencing software as well, so we'll keep hearing it here and there for a while yet.

    • @njits789
      @njits789 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I rather think it's the Hugh Padgham sound you're hearing. He engineered / produced their 80s albums and the albums of many other artists of that era.

    • @robashton8606
      @robashton8606 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@njits789 Yes, Collins and Padgham (who was also the engineer on the Gabriel record I mentioned) were messing about with mics and desk effects, in this case an old spring reverb compressed and fed through a sound gate, whilst trying to get the drum track for The Intruder recorded. Gabriel heard it and said "Use that. It's weird." The sound was copied by just about everyone after Collins began using a more polished version on both his and Genesis's records. It wasn't exclusively Padgham or Collins who came up with the sound and it wouldn't have become a thing if Gabriel hadn't piped up at the moment he heard it either. Many of the people who tried to copy it didn't understand that you needed concert toms like Collins played to get the full effect, which is why the Collins version of the sound is the one people tend to remember.

    Peter Gabriel left after The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974). Genesis released Duke in 1980, which is probably their last real "prog" album. "Los Endos" was was the last song on A Trick of the Tail (1976), but there are also bits and pieces in this medley from a few other songs, including "Dance on a Volcano" off aforementioned album. Some outstanding Phil Collins album tracks would be "Nuclear Burn" from Brand X's first album Unorthodox Behaviour (1976) or "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight" from Genesis' Selling England By the Pound (1973).
