don't know if anyone's still watching this but an update 4 years later: I went to xinjiang about 3-4 months after this video was posted in 2019, which you could say was the "peak" of these internment camps. My grandparents live there so I have a perspective somewhat, and from what I could gather they know nothing about the camps. In 2019, the security and EVERYTHING was just so tight, there were security checkpoints everywhere, and when we were in the first one, it almost felt like clearing security and customs at an international airport. we almost got denied entry because of my US passport, but luckily my parents are Chinese citizens so they let me through. covid took a MASSIVE toll on all these measures, and i went back just a month ago. now, the security checkpoints are nonexistent. while in 2019 you had to go through a full patdown, manual luggage inspection, a whole 40 minute procedure, now you don't even have to get off the vehicle. the bus/taxi driver just goes up to an officer booth and are let through. my cousin just took the gaokao and is heading to college, yet he STILL doesn't know of the internment camps that are literally just a couple miles from his home. china seems to be taking a different route with xinjiang now, which is tourism. on our flight from Beijing to urumqi, the capital of xinjiang, 80% of the passengers were tourists with tourist groups. my grandparents small town of 70k people has been completely transformed from a run-down small area to a almost bustling tourist hotspot. in just a couple years, luxury hotels, theme parks, full on nature walks (mind you xinjiang is in the middle of the desert), and things like that have rapidly been built. my uncle said it was "unbelievable" how fast all the infrastructure was built. we visited one of the tourist "attractions", which was basically a bustling square with a theme park (that wasn't open yet), a hotel, hundreds of small shops, and a show plaza where uighurs put on dancing shows during the evening. surprisingly the square was packed full of people, most tourists. the same is happening in many other towns.
I doubt the CCP really cares, they killed nearly 100 million of their own people during the great Leap Forward alone, so I doubt they'd worry too much about killing off the 11 million Uyghurs if they have to. Turnip Society ‘Cultural genocide’ is a term interchangeable with ‘cultural cleansing’: you’re not the only person confused by it, as ‘cultural genocide’ is a proposed concept that has no accepted definition. The 1 million detainee figure is unreliable because it is only based on satellite images. No group other than the Chinese government know the real figure. Western media fail to mention that some of these detained Uyghur Muslims are religious extremists who preach Salafism and Wahhabism in Xinjiang. Salafism and Wahhabism are two extremely conservative ideologies based on the belief in returning to a purer Islam as practiced in the time of the Prophet Mohammed. These Muslims have caught the Chinese government’s attention as terrorist groups like ISIS and al Qaeda draw on elements of these teachings. They are different from the Muslims that live in the West who appreciate and abide by western liberal laws and values. Some Uyghurs that are not religious extremists are indeed sent to re-educational camps. These Uyghurs are poor and low educated farmers from Southern Xinjiang who don't speak much Chinese and only know how to farm. Most of these people live in poverty and feed themselves on growing wheat, raise cows and sheep on the oasis using the most traditional ways of agriculture. However, it is extremely vulnerable and sensitive to the harsh climate changes and water scarcity in Southern Xinjiang. Their food is purely based on the amount of water they get. If it is too hot in the summer and if you get little water from the mountains, you might end up with no food or no money. The re-education camps teach these poor Uyghur farmers the national law, Chinese language and new skills (modern farming and manufacturing labour skills) so that they can move out of poverty and move to Northern Xinjiang where there are more opportunities. Western media are lumping the Uyghurs farmers and religious extremists together as if they learn in the same camp/schools, when they're not. They all indeed go to re-education camps because they're there to learn. However, farmers can go home, the religious extremists cannot. The religious extremists are sent to re-educational camps and not prison because they haven't done anything severely wrong, just been caught preaching/practicing Salafism and Wahhabism. Salafism and Wahhabism is extremely backward interpretation of Islam and we should not be supporting these people. These conservative Islam ideologies are flourishing in many Muslim-majority areas of China because Chinese ISIS fighters have returned to Xinjiang to recruit new members. They are recruiting poor low educated Uyghurs farmers because they can be easily radicalized.

Freedom of uncensored knowledge is a human right, tho it’s not possible to have anything uncensored, there should be at least freedom of press in every country. People should be able to see every side of the story and decide for themselves. Censoring and denying acts of violence is wrong in itself, and it is not a problem only within China.

Not everyone forgot, it's just that China is very intermixed with the global economy, making actions against it slow and difficult to implement. But in January, Joe Biden signed into law the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, banning all exports from Xinjiang to the US. This is huge because cotton from Xinjiang alone made up 20% of the entire global cotton supply, and more countries are following suit. Also this month the US and Germany have been pushing for the release of a UN report on the treatment of Uyghurs, which is set to come out very soon, and will then allow a motion for an investigation with unrestricted access to be performed by UN investigators. The movement for help is slower than anyone would like, but at least it's remaining steady, and hopefully soon it'll be enough return the rightful freedom to the Uyghurs, and safeguard their culture.
THE so called schools are absolutely concentration camps. Still, they are not murdering people inside. That forces someone to lose their freedom, while at the same time cut the resource of terrorists. USA spent longer time in the middle east, doing worse. Also, China took control of Xinjiang back in Han dynasty, about 2100 years ago, when Muslim didn't even exist. After the collapse of Han dynasty, China regained it in Tang and Qing dynasty, and ROC till today's PRC. So Historically, it's China's land, there's no reason that China shouldn't take control of it. And in Qing, the place is controled by Mongolians, not Uyghurs. Uyghurs are the last people going there after Han, Mongolians and Hui and everyone else, then they claim "it's Uyghurs' land". LMAO.

@@liluzi_9mm78 There is a fundamental problem in Islam. According to Islamic law apostasy is identified by a list of actions such as conversion to another religion, denying the existence of God, rejecting the prophets, mocking God or the prophets, idol worship, rejecting the sharia, or permitting behavior that is forbidden by the sharia, such as adultery or the eating of forbidden foods or drinking of alcoholic beverages. The majority of Muslim scholars hold to the traditional view that apostasy is punishable by death or imprisonment until repentance, at least for adult men of sound mind. Laws prohibiting religious conversion run contrary to Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that "[e]veryone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance." The English historian C. E. Bosworth suggests the traditional view of apostasy hampered the development of Islamic learning, arguing that while the organizational form of the Christian university allowed them to develop and flourish into the modern university, "the Muslim ones remained constricted by the doctrine of waqf alone, with their physical plant often deteriorating hopelessly and their curricula narrowed by the exclusion of the non-traditional religious sciences like philosophy and natural science," out of fear that these could evolve into potential toe-holds for kufr, those people who reject God." And to remind, the biggest fuss leading Islam to the current xenophobic situation, is because there are no working of progression. Take ISIS, they justify Islamic teaching about enslaving women, destruction of scientific researches and somehow 10% Muslims in the world agree with it.

And they'll only leave alone the Han Chinese that don't badmouth the government, too. I can assure you, being 100% Han Chinese is not going to get you anywhere if you dare mention Tiananmen Square. That will get you at the very least fired and evicted, if not exiled. If they don't decide that killing you is the fastest way of getting rid of the problem.
One other detail to note: There is another Muslim ethnic group in China known as the Hui (回). The only difference is that the Hui are basically Han Chinese who converted to Islam. The Hui speak Mandarin Chinese and live both in Xinjiang and east of it, towards central China. What China is doing with these internment camps is no different than what the U.S. and Canada did to the Native Americans in forcibly assimilating them. This is a minor point, but the video initially refers to the Uyghurs as "China's Muslim minority", but there are other Muslims in China too. The Hui people are also traditionally Muslim. The main difference here is geographic location (The Hui are located more in the central interior, along the Gobi desert, iirc), and ethnicity/language (the Hui are sometimes considered "Han-ified", or a subset of the wider Han-category.). This isn't to take away from the video, just to add a bit of nuance, and to stress that this is less about religion (which Western audiences might assume), and more about the Chinese government wanting to secure strategic areas and industries from a population they consider potentially "illoyal" due to several different factors (and the video does go on to highlight this very well).

You'd have to get in to actual war (probably a nuclear war) with them to get them to change anything. the only real thing that political activism does (especially from foreigners) is make them more defensive and nationalistic to be honest. and possibly incite muslims to attack innocent overseas chinese in retaliation as well.
Where is the difference ? Since China is ,,imprisoning,, ,,political Enemies,, its the same. They are concentrating the political opposition in camps... It wont surprise me to find out they actually kill them time by time.
@Vsatyk the main difference i would say is connotation. Internment, at least in the US, carries the memory of Japanese Internment during WWII, isolating a population with a reasonable level of amenities like education and recreation. not as good as life outside, and for many a significant downgrade, but not the worst. At the time, people could say it was for the interest of national security, that the Japanese might have dual loyalties. those who objected could be convinced it was for a greater good without need for coercion (we understand now that it was wrong to do so) also, as far as i know, the US Internment camps didn’t have a re-education aspect to them “Concentration camps” is loaded for the Nazis and the Holocaust, with camps that systematically exterminated the population, and had no illusions to what they were doing. anyone who disagreed faced reprisal. No attempt for re-education, certainly not even basic amenities. China’s camps are somewhere between these two, closer to “concentration” than “internment” i would argue, but not quite there. Since outright exterminating a population is unfeasible politically (China certainly could do it, but that isn’t something you can try and sweep under the rug) They instead focus on Re-education
But what they don't tell you is the thousands of terrorist attacks in the Xinjiang region by outside extremist forces from 1990 to 2016. Those camps are to detain the extremists in the region, and there has not been one terrorist attack since 2017. They're not even always targeting Uighurs. Uighurs and all minorities in China weren't even subjected to the One Child Policy, so how could someone make a point of genocide? Fun facts, there are 39,145 mosques in China, which is 18.6 times more than US, despite there are 7 times more muslim than there are in US. the number of mosques are even more than Buddhist Temples in China, which is mostly Han Chinese's religion. And the government only sat one child policy to han chinese, which helped the Uighur population grow to 8.41 percent of the total population. Uighur chinese, korean chinese, and a lot of other ethnic groups have their own schools that teach their own language and culture. If you've been to china, you would see Muslim food at almost every street corner, and muslim food area in any large supermarket. By seeing so much superiority living as Uighur muslim in China, I dont think these people in the camp are there only because they are muslim or uighur, are you sure they have absolute nothing to do with real terrorism that 've happened?
@@Meryem-lc5pn my man if they are actually concentration camps you would see mass exodus of uighurs out of China. What you actually see is a mass immigration into Xinjiang from neighboring countries. There are literally laws in place to help the 56+ minorities including uighurs get free education, added points to the college entrance exam, free healthcare, and added benefits. You're being lied to by think tanks and CIA backed NGOs such as ASPI and WUC that are on the forefront of pushing this narrative to destabilize the area just like how they did in Iran and other non-US-friendly countries.
@@brooksl445 they can't escape Xinjiang because the border is closed and also there are bounty hunters in neighbouring countries capturing Uyghurs who escape and turning them in for money. This has been documented
@@user-lp7tx1fe6t Please provide your source of bounty hunters. The Xinjiang border is almost always open, and that has been documented very well with reports as well as TH-cam vloggers visiting the region
Xinjiang is a massive region - the enforced labor camps can be seen on google earth and on satellites like shown in this video. They are strategically placed a 15 hour drive away from the tourist attractions. The chinese news sources hire vloggers to go to big Xinjiang cities to show the good outward conditions, while obviously not showing the camps placed in to the faraway fields. Literally one of these kinds of travel vlogs showed the same exact people following the vlogger around, even spying on the vlogger from outside windows while they visited a khazah home.

don't know if anyone's still watching this but an update 4 years later:
I went to xinjiang about 3-4 months after this video was posted in 2019, which you could say was the "peak" of these internment camps.
It take at least 15 hours from urumqi to one of those camps with car

What frustrates me is this was a big thing among most of the world, but then everyone just forgot about it after a few weeks.
“These are... uhhh” *looks at paper* “ah, boarding schools.”
Seems legit.
@8:25
These people are so indoctrinated they cannot tell the difference between truth and lies. It would be so satisfying to call them out though.

Laws prohibiting religious conversion run contrary to Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that "[e]veryone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance."
The English historian C. E. Bosworth suggests the traditional view of apostasy hampered the development of Islamic learning, arguing that while the organizational form of the Christian university allowed them to develop and flourish into the modern university, "the Muslim ones remained constricted by the doctrine of waqf alone, with their physical plant often deteriorating hopelessly and their curricula narrowed by the exclusion of the non-traditional religious sciences like philosophy and natural science," out of fear that these could evolve into potential toe-holds for kufr, those people who reject God."
And to remind, the biggest fuss leading Islam to the current xenophobic situation, is because there are no working of progression. Take ISIS, they justify Islamic teaching about enslaving women, destruction of scientific researches and somehow 10% Muslims in the world agree with it.

Not because they think it's morally right necessarily, but because it would make pushing their agenda harder.
Can't keep on shouting "big government" when the biggest government in the world is disappearing people into concentration camps, just because of their religious beliefs or segregating immigrants and minorities from the system that only benefits the Han Chinese, constantly violating human rights and freedoms that you would guaranteed in any other country.
And they'll only leave alone the Han Chinese that don't badmouth the government, too.
I can assure you, being 100% Han Chinese is not going to get you anywhere if you dare mention Tiananmen Square.
That will get you at the very least fired and evicted, if not exiled.
If they come to the conclusion that extradition is way too much trouble they WILL send you to a camp, where they most likely will try to break you.
The only difference is that those North American countries acknowledge what happened and allow for free and open discussion of that history, whereas China tries to hide what it is doing.

This isn't to take away from the video, just to add a bit of nuance, and to stress that this is less about religion (which Western audiences might assume), and more about the Chinese government wanting to secure strategic areas and industries from a population they consider potentially "illoyal" due to several different factors (and the video does go on to highlight this very well).

oaim50 ur freedom is always “dictated by current laws”... unless somehow you can change your laws singlehanded. Lol
Yeah, just let the islamic law freedoms prevail
@@idizzzful While you and I might not be fans of Islam, there's such a thing as a time and a place. This oppression of the Uighurs is just not on, and I don't care whether they're Muslim or not. A sense of perspective, my friend.

@@idizzzful dude I get your point, but those are innocent folks, the don't deserve to die
There should be more than one video until it becomes no.1 in trending in whole world.
even if it becomes trending in the whole world the chinese will still never hear it because youtube is banned in china and the CCP wont stop . They'd probably prefer to blow up the entire world than stop anything they are doing. so yeah. good luck with that. china isnt the west. its not a country where whining and political activism can work. You'd have to get in to actual war (probably a nuclear war) with them to get them to change anything.
the only real thing that political activism does (especially from foreigners) is make them more defensive and nationalistic to be honest. and possibly incite muslims to attack innocent overseas chinese in retaliation as well.
@Bosin Bishaaa If the CCP is against these muslims, then these muslims must be doing something very good. That's how I see it.
Shame on world who is sensitive towards holocast but what about these innocent humans are they less human?
@Hernando Malinche Even the five-years-old children and the eighty-years-old grandmothers?
Money
Salman Rafique maybe because a lot of countries depend on China and it wouldn’t be politically correct to shed light on their dirt
Well that's what you get in return after spreading terrorism to world I wish other countries starts adopting it as well
@Hernando Malinche agreed with you young ones ought to be get rid of their terrorist knowledge by giving them good education
I am a citizen of China in Beijing, and I felt truly horrified and ashamed
dont be ashamed of yourself , it is purely the government and unless you support it, you did nothing bad
its a diary factory
Chinese Hitler, instead of “Jude” a freaking QR code next to the guys’ picture
I'll bet the qr code was so that the people had to use their phone to scan it and "check in" with the government.

Currently: internment camp.
Not too distant future: concentration camps.
Where is the difference ? Since China is ,,imprisoning,, ,,political Enemies,, its the same. They are concentrating the political opposition in camps... It wont surprise me to find out they actually kill them time by time.
Well, they are torturing people very brutally in these camps. Check out @east_turkestan_ on Instagram for some footage.
@@thenewbrazy9997 I dont know it, im assuming it. Im 100 % sure tough, they execute people there...
@Vsatyk the main difference i would say is connotation. Internment, at least in the US, carries the memory of Japanese Internment during WWII, isolating a population with a reasonable level of amenities like education and recreation. not as good as life outside, and for many a significant downgrade, but not the worst. At the time, people could say it was for the interest of national security, that the Japanese might have dual loyalties. those who objected could be convinced it was for a greater good without need for coercion (we understand now that it was wrong to do so) also, as far as i know, the US Internment camps didn’t have a re-education aspect to them
“Concentration camps” is loaded for the Nazis and the Holocaust, with camps that systematically exterminated the population, and had no illusions to what they were doing. anyone who disagreed faced reprisal.
Then plz send troops to fight us lol, our army need some target practice
This is history getting repeated in a much brutal way and in a more developed world.
@@brooksl445 are you trying to justify the concentration camps? Lol wow
