I bought a 2024 M3 Macbook Air in June. I paid $200 to upgrade to 16GB unified memory and $200 to upgrade to 512GB Storage. I paid $1499 total refurbished from Apple ($1799 new). I inquired about upgrading and it's too late to return and too early to upgrade. They suggest using a reseller to sell my Mac and the highest offer is $955 for my Mac. I really do not need a pro but considering I paid for 16GB upgrade that is now free and the price difference between what I paid and a M4 with the same configuration as my M3 is $100, I thought maybe, just maybe Apple would understand. I was wrong.

Will the base MacBook m4 Pro last years (9-10) if all you use it is for writing, web surfing, and just use the apps that’s already on it? I have a 14 year old 4 gig ram windows laptop that’s still going, and getting updates. I see a lot of videos with people replacing maxed out Mac’s every 3 or 4 years and MacBook keyboards getting oil on the screens.
I continue to receive updates on my 2019 MacBook Pro 16-inch, which is equipped with Intel processors. Despite its age, it continues to perform all of my necessary tasks effectively. Therefore, I would not characterize it as lacking or suggest that it necessitates replacement within a five-year period or more. Although I understand that it can be enticing to want to update when new software and features are added to these laptops. I use my MacBook for college assignments, workplace paperwork, gaming, music production, and web surfing, so you should be fine.
@@j.j4090 I've used my 2013 Macbook Pro for 11 years and it's still great for basic tasks!! Apple's pricing strategy is exceptionally clever. They use a technique known as "laddering," which takes advantage of cognitive biases to guide customers toward higher-end products. For example, a customer initially interested in a base-model MacBook Air is often inclined to pay a bit more for added features, like extra storage. However, the mid-tier MacBook Air models are priced close to entry-level MacBook Pros. This proximity in price leads the customer to think, "I might as well get a MacBook Pro." Consequently, they continue moving up the pricing ladder, ultimately spending around $500 more than they originally intended on a more premium product.
