“Throw Your Mask Away” is a worthy #2 spot especially seeing the Phantom Thieves have “I Believe” as their response to what Maruki’s song states Edit: if you listen to both songs one after the other you can really tell that these songs are responses to each other, and I love that.

I'm so happy to see Throw Away Your Mask on here! I'm super into Persona 5 now that I've watched Let's Plays of Royal and Strikers, and this song captures the spirit of the Third Semester antagonist so well (not to mention it's just a beautiful song).
@@KingdomHeartsBrawler On the other hand, it could be said that the beauty of Edge of Dawn is that it makes her out to be the villain of her own story regardless of if you side with her. I didn't expect them either, but I can definitely see why he put them on the list. While I, personally, prefer God Shattering Star as a song overall, Edge of Dawn is definitely the better "Villain Song", and when it comes to Throw Away Your Mask...I'm not the biggest fan of it or the game it came from (I've always been more of a Persona 4 fan), I acknowledge that it's worthy of being on the list.

One of my favorite villain songs is With Me from Sonic and the Black Knight, mostly how it's song from two villain perspectives let me explain this song is seen from both Sonic's perspective and Merlina's perspective basically the lyrics from Sonic's point of view paint him in our eyes/the player's eyes as this noble borderline anti-hero but from Merlina's point of view Sonic is the noble anti-villain the one using noble actions in order to hasten Camelot's end and only she can stop him from causing Camelot's end, and the lyrics from Merlina's point of view reveal her to be this tragic anti-villainess who had noble intentions she just wanted to protect Camelot, and it's inhabitants but she let her fear of Camelot's natural end drive to commit acts we can clearly see as villainous acts. This final bit of dialogue between Sonic and Merlina before their fight kind of hint at the theming of the song: Merlina: "By helping haste Camelot's destruction you have proven to be no noble knight." Sonic: "Guess I can't play the hero all the time." And yes I liked Sonic and the Black Knight.
I think as soon as I heard "King Dice" in the number transitions, I knew that it would be an honorable mention. Also, shouldn't we have a musical video game by now? Like, as in a video game with characters breaking out into song? We clearly have the capability. We should be far beyond the one-offs by now.

@@captainandrew45 Yeah Oggie's Revenge is definitely the closest we've ever gotten to something like that. Also, you could argue that rhythm games could count as musical games, but the only other rhythm game besides Oggies Revenge I can think of where villain and hero sing is Guitar Hero 3.

Having listened to FF14's "To the Edge" I still personally consider it one of my personally favorite songs. I am not fully sure it counts as a villain song but it has always given me the vibes of it representing the laments of the Ascians and their fight against the Scions. From the perspective of Elidibus.
You know if you think about it, To The Edge reminds me of Throw Away Your Mask, and not by lyrics but by the point of it, The Unsundered and most obvious Elidibus are the heroes of their own story, Emet-Selch and Lahabrea may have been devious with their actions and Elidibus' plan is basically butchering a title, but their intent is to restore their home and bring their people back, that is something I love, Lahabrea may not be the least interesting character, but Emet-Selch he's a sympathetic mastermind who has a point, and Elidibus nearly succeeded in his plan if weren't for The Warrior of Light, plus their songs are just fantastic!
SO GLAD that Throw Your Mask Away made it in. That is by far my favorite villain song of all time because it's not. Really a villain song. "Is Maruki a villain?" is such a good discussion and that song is just BEAUTIFUL.
Would this include boss themes, cause those are technically villain songs Well I was wrong, but I’m still would want to see a top then boss themes in his boss marathon... even if number one is very obvious.
I agree as long as With Me from Sonic and the Black Knight is on the best final boss themes list! Say what you want about the rest of the game(to me it is a guilty pleasure), but that song is EPIC!...and kind of deep for Sonic standards.
It almost sounds like "It Has To Be This Way" is a duet of sorts. Raiden's voice is definitely the main one but, you can hear another voice singing slightly fainter along with it in some parts. It's almost as if Raiden and Armstrong are coming to the realization that they aren't so different and look at each other with newfound respect and admiration.
Throw Your Mask Away from P5R made me really emotional cause it's a really beautiful song but yet it's tragic cause what Maruki was doing wasn't really malicious and that he just wanted a better world for everyone to live in and to be happy and free from being in pain and no longer suffering but as Akechi would put it I don't want to live a lie and I don't want anyone just deciding everything for me cause I'm technically still being controlled I'm not free I'm still a puppet GOD this game has done things to meT.T
... I'm sad that Die House is the "countdown honorable mention" (ya know the thing you use to transition between ranks) but at least it gets some notice
I feel like Your Reality from Doki Doki Literature Club could have been an honourable mention. If nothing else, just the fact how catchy and iconic it is should really give it a mention.
I mean: A Skeletor impression trying to do Queen, telling one of his minions to "Play faster, Williams" and imagining his victory before facing reality but also saying that he'll be back is...well, just hilarious.
"Throw Your Mask Away" is the perfect villain song double as the final boss song. I really felt bad for Maruki as he got twisted with his ideals to help people. Even the fist fight at the end is heartbreaking...
Oh, there he is! Ma boi, the Phantom of the Bwahpera! Glad he's getting more recognition! H E C K I N G. C H O N K E R. Like having the Phantom really, really roast Mario and his franchise hard until everything is nothing but ashes. Maybe have Phantom capture Princess Peach as his new girlfriend/"duet partner" or something (if you read the lyrics, it hints that Phantom has a crush on her). 4:47 - Also, fun fact: Phantom is voiced by Augustin Chemelle, a real opera singer! @@Koyuki_Yukihime It doesn't have to play during a fight with the villain to be a villain's song. Like his Silent Hill example, or even Still Alive which plays during the credits.

@@RWBYraikou888 You know, that is a very good point about Your Reality. I guess it just wasn't as... grand as some of the others. I have to say, I'm REALLY happy he put Room of Angel on the list, even if it was relatively low on it. Silent Hill 1,2,3, and 4 have, collectively, one of my favorite soundtracks of all time, definitely in the top 5. Room of Angel in particular, despite its grim lyrics, is one I love very much.
Honestly kinda surprised you didn't talk about "With Me" from Sonic and the Black Knight. A rocking track whose surprisingly grim lyrics are written in a way that goes back and forth from being from Merlina's perspective and from Sonic's perspective, their conflict portrayed almost as if they were conversing with one another. Also, the original version's guitar is performed by Marty Friedman of Megadeth.
I'm really happy Edge of Dawn made it on here. It is a rather beautiful song when you realise the meaning behind its lyrics, and what it says of Edelgard.

Maruki is the first example in my memory of an Anti-Villain in the Persona series, and I'm disappointed that he was only used as a post-game end boss, because a character like that deserves their own game.
Under the right circumstances, he could have been an ally of the Phantom Thieves, helping with targets who's hearts are corrupted by their own pain and trauma; you could have had two teams of Phantom Thieves to punish rapists and slavers like Kamoshida and Madarame, and help victims like Futaba and Sae Niijima. Heck most of the confidants are victims who are struggling and need help. Maruki could have been the therapist that they needed.
More like Maruki is the TRUE ending boss in Royal If you don't fight him you'll either get the "False" ending when in the extra part of the game or get the standard ending from Vanilla Persona 5 if you don't meet the requirements to move to the Extended story The game doesn't immediately end after Yaldaboath It continues to the next portion if you completed Maruki's Confidant ranks Maruki gives you the Choice to fight him, you don't just fight him. Akechi gives you a literal Dialogue option to see if you want to go through the last Palace or skip ahead and get an ending
Quick honorable mention: "Go Tell Aunt Rhody" from Resident Evil VII. I know this isn't sung by the main villain of the game (while she did hum it once or twice), it's still kind of haunting to make it sound like a children's song they teach at elementary school playgrounds. Almost like "Ring-Around-a-Rosie", but WAY more darker. And it gets even scarier as the song builds up until the final whisper.
More of these songs made me cry than I thought. It was like I was given a damn therapy session in this video, and I strongly applaud that. Thank you, Josh. Your character studies helped.
The Arkham one is funnier when you realise that Johnny Charisma came up with and performed a whole song, unaware that Batman instead imagined a dead guy, came up with a whole new song, and played that over him. Poor Johnny.

It can be argued either way on What I'm Made Of. It could be seen as a theme of Sonic boasting. But I personally prefer to see it as Metal Sonic's considering lines like "Like a million faces. I've recognized them all. And one by one they all they all become a number as they fall."

I'm trying to figure out if shiawase nara ii ya from Yakuza Kiwami counts. because it's sung by Majima, who is kind of a villain in the first game? But it's in the Kiwami edition, made after zero, a game where majima is a main character and is decently heroic. personally I'd count it tbh
Fun fact about the song “Philistine” the Japanese and North American releases for the game have different sounding tracks. The Japanese one sounds like American Punk Rock while the American one sounds like Jpop
Adding onto the P5R theme with Maruki, while "Throw Away Your Mask" is sung from Maruki's side, "I Believe" is of course sung from Joker/the Thieves' perspective. It says how they can reach up and do something much more, achieving our own goals and saying that one day We'll "Be able to touch down on the stars", meaning how we can reach even greater success on our own and alone than quietly being controlled by a force that may be good but is wrong in imprisoning the Human heart. Later on in the song, it says, "It's our turn to get back, To grab the future which we fully believe And it's not given to us It's earned!" It ironically says how the thieves are here to basically save the day, yes, but they are here to make right and free everyone from this reality Maruki has created. If we are locked up to be slaves, what makes us different? Our own thoughts, personalities, ways of life, and overall differences are what make us human.
There is one song that I would like to give honorable mention to: "What I'm Made Of" from Sonic Heroes. It actually is similar to "It Has To Be This Way", where you can't really tell if it's being sung from the perspective of the hero or villian
Currently there's a video game being made around villain songs. It's called Billie Bust Up, and currently in alpha are a couple songs. The first one is called "I've Had Enough of You," sung by a puppet called Fantocchio. If you want to know how it's pronounced, the song reveals it's a combination of "Fantasia" and "Pinocchio"... So basically, Fan Tokyo. And as the title indicates, it's pretty much a hate song, AKA a diss track. But it's also got some theatrical terms given how Fantocchio is an actor. Well, more like the love child of Fizzeroli and the original Angel Dust, down to having the latter's voice actor. There's currently no sound effects added, but it does have some damn good musical talent. Like I said, the bosses were designed around the music, which means certain attacks are synched with the beat, like strings coming out of the floating hands when he says "string" for example, and the song will only continue once you do a bit of damage to him. The second song gives you a different taste of musical based gameplay, and it's called "A Million Gruesome Ways to Die." Guess what that one is about. But unlike Fantoccio, Barnaby, voiced by Black Gryphon, isn't particularly malicious to Billie, just operates by a different kind of moral system than her. In other words, he tries to kill her cause he thinks she'll be able to join in on his idea of fun. And he's got a lot of ideas on how to try doing so. He's got acid blasters, dynamite, alligators, electroshockers, even giant slices of bread, for examples. But you don't get to attack him, it's more a Crash Bandicoot chaser hallway where most of the lyrics are physically referenced in his attacks. Meaning he'll try to slice you or drop you in a volcano when he brings those things up. But this time the phantom owl is accomodated by some Luigi's Mansion style ghosts, giving it some more charm, as sinister as it can be. Oh, and you can challenge yourself by setting your HP to just one if you wanna prove you got perfect rhythm.
Legitimately, Maruki’s song and fight and character and everything about him was damn life changing for me. He’s incredible. That song, man… that song…
Additionally, about GLADoS, as we learn in Portal 2, her system had a built in emergency fail safe that replayed the last 2 minutes of her life for eternity
Alright, so here's are a few of my predictions for this list: want you gone from Portal 2, Great might Poo from Conker, Phantom Rabbid's song from Mario + Rabbids, Philistine from No More Heroes 2, and 2 I really hope get in the Credits song from Double Dragon Neon and E.G.G.M.A.N. from Sonic Adventure 2. Edit: Dang only 3, I was really hoping EGGMAN would have made the list. Still it was a good list.
@@Mysticgamer no, the issue with one winged angel was the lyrics don't mean anything. There is like 2 songs in the list that are sung by the villain. The rest aren't.
Honestly, I'm surprised that In a Moment's Time from Skullgirls didn't make the cut, seeing how the combination of manipulation from a malevolent artifact and jazz combined to make a nice credits song, but at least I got to hear some catchy new songs I haven't before!
I personally love Primal Dialga's theme from Eos. Sure it doesn't have lyrics, but everytime I heard it during the boss battle I knew I was in for a hard fight.
And then they continued the Phantom's diss tracks in the sequel's DLC. They use him to roast Ubisoft's own mascot, Rayman. I don't know what my boy did to deserve it, but the song is even catchier than before. Phantom sings opera to a jazzy instrumental, calls Ray a has been and an eggplant, rubs it in that the rabbids overshadow him, disses his punch and glide, and says even his friend thinks he smells. And during the interlude, he takes time to make fun of the rabbids and Beepo. Must've been satisfying to give Phantom the old Curtain Call.
I remember hearing #5 (not specified for spoiler reasons) for the first time, and thinking "this is the saddest villain song to ever exist." I stand by that. Crap is emotional, and I've never even played the game.

This final bit of dialogue between Sonic and Merlina before their fight kind of hint at the theming of the song:
Merlina: "By helping haste Camelot's destruction you have proven to be no noble knight."
Sonic: "Guess I can't play the hero all the time."
And yes I liked Sonic and the Black Knight.
Agreed,Pokémon, sonic, and the Mario and Luigi series have the best final boss themes in my opinion
@@LycanMOON facts
I’m not going to lie, if the rule of “lyrics required” i would have liked to see destiny 2’s “deep stone lullaby.
I think as soon as I heard "King Dice" in the number transitions, I knew that it would be an honorable mention.
Also, shouldn't we have a musical video game by now? Like, as in a video game with characters breaking out into song? We clearly have the capability. We should be far beyond the one-offs by now.
There kinda has been? Epic Mickey 2 was a musical and the Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge was, too, but I assume you're talking about a musical game not based on a pre-existing IP
@@captainandrew45 Well, I didn't know about those games, but yes, that is what I had in mind.
It'd be cool to see one, though like already mentioned there's a few already ^-^ Would love to see a realy fleshed out one XD
@@newbiegamelover4767 There is a rhythm/boss-rush game coming out that each stage has you fight you fighting a boss that sings their own themes.
Sad that ”Your Reality” from DDLC (though don’t know if that one count as a villain song or if it doesn’t count) wasn’t on the list but otherwise it was really good
I think it counts as a villain song
Sammmmeeee. I wanted it to be on here so bad it's like one of my favourite songs ever not just like one of my favourite video game songs but one of my favourite songs. It's beautiful.
it's not really villainous
@@olserknam still comes from the antagonist from the game, I think it counts

I was gonna flip if "Philistine" wasnt on here. I'm glad I wasn't disappointed.
Having seen Margaret Moonlight in the Intro, I would have been shocked if she WASN'T included here.
Catchy as hell
My guesses include The Great Mighty Poo and The Phantom of the Bwahpra
Update: CALLED IT! 😎👍
Ding and ding. I was hoping for those at well.
BWAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH
I knew great mighty poo was going to be on here, when it was announced.
I do love "It Had to Be This Way", though personally I think "Red Sun" was the best of the villain themes in Revengence.
Love Red sun if only because Sundowner doesnt try to convince Raiden that his way of life is better then Raidens like every other boss does he just owns it, Hes a peace of shit, he loves war, *and hes Happy with that*
@@agenttex5973 Yeah, sometimes a villain with an interesting philosophy motives is good, but other times you just need someone who's pure evil and loves every second of it.
Mistral: I'm fighting because I love my boss and his ideals. That's why I'm manipulating a Georgian revolutionary group into destabilizing the region for profit.
Khamsin: I'm fighting to bring freedom and democracy to Abkhazia. That's why I'm helping with this revolution.
Monsoon: I'm fighting because I'm a depressed nihilist who loves killing. You used to be like that too. I want you to admit this.
Sundowner: I'm fighting because I like fighting and killing things. I want to continue doing so. I'm putting kid brains through horrific torture to make them into cyborg killing machines because they will cause more conflict and let me kill more. @@thevideogameempire and that's why Sundowner is so fun lol he doesnt care to talk philosophy hes just here to enjoy war lol sometimes a simple villain can be great (although every villian in MGR, are very good)
I'd actually argue "The Only Thing I Know for Real" is. Especially after Sam's DLC story.
@@variousnumber891 They're all pretty good. Stains of Time used to be my favorite before Red Sun.
Disappointed to not see a Sonic song even in Honorable Mentions. There were at least three villain songs that could've easily qualified (E.G.G.M.A.N., What I'm Made Of and With Me).
EGGMAN is the best eggman theme, fight me
and With Me is amazing
What are the other two from I heard of what I'm made of the sonic heroes sound track are actually what motivated me to buy the Game Cube version and a Game Fube controller for my Wii to play the game
@@sarahmorley7751 EGGMAN is.. well, Dr. Eggman's theme that's used in several games as his leitmotif (notably in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Generations). With Me is the final boss theme in Sonic and the Black Knight.
@@slayallrebels5996 thanks I'll have to check them out
I think the song Infinite was cool too
Having listened to FF14's "To the Edge" I still personally consider it one of my personally favorite songs. I am not fully sure it counts as a villain song but it has always given me the vibes of it representing the laments of the Ascians and their fight against the Scions. From the perspective of Elidibus.
Definitely think it deserves consideration. I would also suggest that "God in Fire" from Dissidia 012 would be a worthy inclusion.
YESYESYESYESYESYES
I see the Phantom. I really do hope he's on the list
Ya that be grate
Same
No kidding it a hole opera making fun of Mario one of the most famous and recognize able characters
Phantom of the bwahpera
Like, Mario + Rabbids is basically a YTP in game form, and it made that insane song that's actually really good.
Bwaaaaaaaaahhh!!!
SO GLAD that Throw Your Mask Away made it in. That is by far my favorite villain song of all time because it's not. Really a villain song. "Is Maruki a villain?" is such a good discussion and that song is just BEAUTIFUL.
I’m of the type that sees him as good guy tbh. Never bought into the whole “misery builds character” thing.
@@thelotuseater6496 same honestly.
I honestly would've let Maruki win and change the world.
I would not call him a villain, but an antagonist.
Would this include boss themes, cause those are technically villain songs
Well I was wrong, but I’m still would want to see a top then boss themes in his boss marathon... even if number one is very obvious.
Pretty sure lyrics are required so as long as the boss theme has official lyrics (i.e. no fan covers) it's eligible
Yeah I’m pretty sure honestly I’m interested to see what be picks
@@starkeeper_youtube This open space for Rose Battle Theme (Pokémon Sword) since it sing "Rosa seda credo" as a lyric some times
@@conic2721 Well he already discounted One Winged Angel, so I doubt it was considered.
Same! It really makes you question about what choice is right. Sometimes you don't want to see anyone hurt...
... I'm sad that Die House is the "countdown honorable mention" (ya know the thing you use to transition between ranks) but at least it gets some notice
I am kinda sad Nino Precioso isn't on here at all.
Die house is really good I'm sad that he didn't mention that but at least he put it in the background
Yeah it's pretty disappointing but oh well at least it was in the video
The number transition is the best part of this list lol
Man i wish it was in the oficial numbers instead of the honorable mentions. (but i still enjoyed the list)
I feel like Your Reality from Doki Doki Literature Club could have been an honourable mention. If nothing else, just the fact how catchy and iconic it is should really give it a mention.
I hope Satan and Jezebel from Saints Row gets on here. And who the heck can forget Skullmageddon?
I mean: A Skeletor impression trying to do Queen, telling one of his minions to "Play faster, Williams" and imagining his victory before facing reality but also saying that he'll be back is...well, just hilarious.
@@Volvagia1927 He didn't even make honorable mention!
Though not technically a song, Miror B's theme from Pokemon Colosseum is top tier.
Oh hell yeah. I dance to those beats.
Both of them are fantastic
Calling it now: The Great Mighty Poo from Conker's Bad Fur Day is at least gonna be an honorable mention, if not on the list
Edit: Called it
Wish granted
"Throw Your Mask Away" is the perfect villain song double as the final boss song. I really felt bad for Maruki as he got twisted with his ideals to help people. Even the fist fight at the end is heartbreaking...
GLaDos Still Alive is a awesome villain song,in fact all of her songs are flawless masterpieces.

Edit: Where's Bury The Light?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Edit 2: Wait, has Josh played Devil May Cry? I actually have no idea.
Never heard of Devil Mat Cry, is it anything like Devil May Cry?
Bury the light is not exactly villain song right ? , I mean of course it's Virgil's theme , but it doesn't play when you fight Virgil ,
it's play during you playing as Virgil. The song play during Virgil fight is Silver Bullet which is kinda Nero's theme.
@@Koyuki_Yukihime It doesn't have to play during a fight with the villain to be a villain's song. Like his Silent Hill example, or even Still Alive which plays during the credits.
In response to Edit 2, yes. Josh has played Devil May Cry. He's referenced it quite a number of times on his channel. And in response to Edit 1... I was honestly hoping that Your Reality from DDLC would be on this list, but I guess not.
@@RWBYraikou888 You know, that is a very good point about Your Reality. I guess it just wasn't as... grand as some of the others. Plus, I think that when Monika sings the song at that time, Monika isn't really a villain anymore, since she accepts that the game has to end and that she can't have the player.
The Phantom of the Bwahpera is voiced by a real opera singer.
Yea
Ooh really? I grew up around opera so that is really cool to know.
Awww yeah we got “look pimpin” from mad world and “it has to be this way” from Rising Revengence

More like Maruki is the TRUE ending boss in Royal
If you don't fight him you'll either get the "False" ending when in the extra part of the game or get the standard ending from Vanilla Persona 5 if you don't meet the requirements to move to the Extended story
The game doesn't immediately end after Yaldaboath
It continues to the next portion if you completed Maruki's Confidant ranks
Maruki gives you the Choice to fight him, you don't just fight him.
Room of Angel is a song I haven't listened to in years. Thanks for reminding me. Loved it when I was younger.
The Arkham one is funnier when you realise that Johnny Charisma came up with and performed a whole song, unaware that Batman instead imagined a dead guy, came up with a whole new song, and played that over him. Poor Johnny.

Later on in the song, it says,
"It's our turn to get back,
To grab the future which we fully believe
And it's not given to us
It's earned!"
It ironically says how the thieves are here to basically save the day, yes, but they are here to make right and free everyone from this reality Maruki has created. If we are locked up to be slaves, what makes us different? Our own thoughts, personalities, ways of life, and overall differences are what make us human.

I genuinely had no Idea Johnathan Coulton wrote Still Alive, thats wild. Ive been a fan of his for a while and a fan of portal, thats great.

I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
I'm slightly sad that E.G.G.M.A.N wasn't part of the list
Alright, so here's are a few of my predictions for this list: want you gone from Portal 2, Great might Poo from Conker, Phantom Rabbid's song from Mario + Rabbids, Philistine from No More Heroes 2, and 2 I really hope get in the Credits song from Double Dragon Neon and E.G.G.M.A.N. from Sonic Adventure 2.
Edit: Dang only 3, I was really hoping EGGMAN would have made the list. Still it was a good list.
There is a severe lack of Sonic in this list.
E.G.G.M.A.N would’ve been my choice for that franchise
Because the song actually has to be sung by the villian in the game, which was why one wing angel didn't count. Too bad, eggman didn't sing it.
@@Mysticgamer no, the issue with one winged angel was the lyrics don't mean anything. There is like 2 songs in the list that are sung by the villain. The rest aren't.
@@The_Stumbler You're right, I commented too soon in the video.
@@Mysticgamer In that case, maybe With Me from Sonic and the Black Knight?
I hope the Mad Doctors song "Help Me, Help You" from Epic Mickey 2: The Power Of Two is on this list
Or "The Mad Doctor's Wonderful World of Evil".
Still Alive deserves the classic status
I remember hearing #5 (not specified for spoiler reasons) for the first time, and thinking "this is the saddest villain song to ever exist."
I stand by that. Crap is emotional, and I've never even played the game.
In glad to see "Throw away your mask" on here. Because that one or "I believe" (the song that plays right when you go to change Maruki's heart) just hits hard because of what his true intentions are
I never thought of edge of dawn like that, thank you Josh
