Pocket carrying tip up should always be with the blade towards the back of the pocket for this reason exactly. Also if you carry with the blade towards the back, you can slide your thumb inside your pocket and pinch it to pull the knife out. Which also puts the knife in the correct orientation in your hand to open it.
Great lesson on spring repair and replacement. You mentioned the proceeds going to Tunnel to Towers Foundation. I am a retired FDNY officer and I volunteer with this fantastic Foundation. It was named after Stephen Seller, a fireman that died that day in the collapses on 9/11. They are doing their best to get homeless veterans off the streets and into their own home. I'm proud to represent them when they send me out to teach about the what their mission is. Keep up the good work.
OUCH! Knowing that now about that knife, it might be best to carry it in your right hand pocket or reverse the clip for left hand. Good job on the repair.👍🏻
Ted, I was going to make that same suggestion. That would put the blade towards the BACK of the pocket away from the hand going into the pocket. The way it is now, it would work in the RIGHT pocket safely.
You do amazing work. I was always wanting to learn something new. I can't carry a knife vertical in my pocket for that exact reason. I hope your finger heals well. Have a wonderful day brother
Doc I didn't read if this was suggested already, but cary the knife in the right pocket all the way to the right so there is no room for the blade to come open or for the hand to fit on that side.
Well Kevin sorry that happened , I can’t amagine how many times that you’ve nicked yourself doing what you do .thanks for all the info , I’m learning a lot from ya . I’m glad doctor in your title ,couldn’t resist the pun , luva keep on --keep on
I try to carry my knives with the blade to the back of the pocket but I can’t swear that I always have depending on the knife of the day, but now I will be more aware since you were thoughtful enough to share that information. Thanks!
Great repair information. You really make the repairs seem simple. I'm sure it's more challenging than you make it look. To followup on the carry tip below. If you orient the pocket clip on the other side of the knife, it will be suitable for left front pocket carry. As is, it should be carried in the right front pocket.
Great repair doc, i have heard those knives have brittle backsprings and having the tools open on both ends of the same spring is very hard on them. I have one that was my grandfathers, that is still good but i try to baby it. I guess i should keep an eye out for a parts knife of the same year, maybe it would fit correctly if i ever need it.
That happened to me with a older case trapper lock. The blade has a little detent in the blade but it isn’t strong enough to keep them closed riding around in your pocket, they really need a back-spring too, even though they have a thumb stud to open.
Good job on the repair and yes if you use knives somewhere one is going to bite it happens that 112 slim is a great knife I carry mine often. Stay sharp Kevin
I’m an amateur, but when I work on knives and the back springs don’t line up and look good to me, I’ll place the back of the knife on a belt sander to get a uniform look… just my two cents worth. Awesome channel. I look forward to watching it every day
Oof…tuff lesson learned. The way the pocket clip is on there it’s setup for right hand pocket carry. In right pocket the blade will rest against seam and keep blade from opening in situation as what happened with you. For left pocket carry, put the clip on the other side and you’ll be golden..👍🏼👍🏼 I picked up a 2013 721 Slimline from a pawn shop for $10 yesterday. It’s look very close to the 722. Just slight differences in blade and scales. From what I understand the 721 was a Wal-Mart exclusive. I love it. Very lightweight like the 722. Great video as always. Take care.
Just a consideration Kevin. Determine what pocket you will carry that 112 in. If it is is the left change the clip to the other side so that your blade sits up against the back side of pocket and the pant seam. This will help some to keep that blade from opening. Also maybe a little leather lanyard to pull the knife up and out, instead of putting hand down inside. I have those concerns about blades opening unexpectedly. I use leather pouches in pocket which fit on pocket lip if i take off the clip. Great job on the re-pin; you do a careful grind job. Thanks for sharing. God Bless your evening.
If you carry in your left pocket, swap your clip to the other side of the knife so the blade opens towards the back of your pocket not the front. Then when you are sliding your hand in your pocket it's against the back of the knife not the blade side. Hope that helps!
A pocket knife slip would eliminate that danger, I just started using one recently and love it, it keeps my knives from getting scratched in my pocket and sloshing around. Now I remember why I switched to carrying my slip joints…. I’ve been cut several times by moderns simply by flipping them open etc.
Kevin, if you carry that 112 in your left pocket, you must switch the clip to the opposite side of the knife! That way the blade will be trapped to the outside and not open.
Great job on the demo knife! I was wondering if you were to lightly sand the back, Springs that would even out some of the proud edges in the center part of the knife understand that the ends wont exactly match because it’s a different spring from a different knife. just wondering, would it hurt at all to do that?
You know you won something from the live feed last night. Check your TH-cam notifications! I replied to the comment you won with within the Canadian unboxing video.
Suggestion: Remove the thumb studs from your Buck 112 and pinch the blade with two fingers to open the knife. With a bit of practice you can do a one hand opening by holding the heel of the knife against something solid while pinching the blade. I really enjoy your videos, well done.
If the belt clip can be moved to the other side, it will position the blade against the corner of your pocket. This will keep it from opening and position it away from your hand as you reach into your pocket for other stuff As it is, it's set up for right pocket carry.
Hate you got cut but it happens. I carry that 112 lite everyday in a cargo pocket by itself and haven’t had any issues. That’s a great knife. Thanks for the video.
I have the same knife 1967 Camillus with a broken spring that I would like to have replaced but I do not have a replacement spring. Is this something you can replace?

One thing I don't like about the Buck 112 is how far the thumb studs stick out. I had the carbon fiber scaled version and felt I had the perfect EDC.....I wound up removing the thumb studs, which are only pressed into place...then gave the knife away after too many brews🤷🏼♂️🤦♂️😇
I have had my Buck 110 sport open like that and I found out the best way to carry mine and that knife is in the right pocket all the way towards to the right. That way if it does open your hand isn't near the blade and blade pushes against your pocket.
Yes!! That would help. I was being stubborn and carrying it in my left pocket, because I love my Spitfire 722 in my right pocket. It’s my GO TO!! It could still happen and that would definitely hinder it from happening though! Thanks for watching and sharing this!!
If you want to carry the 112 you could swap the clip to the other side and keep the blade top the left also. And I understand the spitfire is a great knife I have 3 of them.

Kevin, be careful, I also had a knife open in my pocket after jumping from a tree when testing knives, luckily I reacted in time and nothing happened.. Some knives will open even after falling to the ground, so it's probably best to carry them in leather case ! I am writing this from my own experience.. I like traditional folding knives that can be opened with more force and it is better with two hands.. But of course I understand that not everyone may like the nice grandfather's traditional folding knives.. I prefer solid knives that don't open, won't open at the wrong moment, but you have to be careful, any knife can hurt you.. Cheers Kevin !🔪👍😉
Always have the blade towards the seam of the pocket, carrying that Buck with the clip set for right handed carry in the left pocket was the reason it happened

I have never had that happen before but I try to be watchful. I hate that happened buddy but it's going to happen being a knife guy lol
I was opening a dog toy at Christmas with my pocket knife. Slipped and went straight through my thumb. Should of went to hospital to have it stitched but no way waiting for hours to be seen so covered it in plasters. Two months on it's still not right and have a pretty scar as a reminder.
But also only knife I'll carry with a pocket clip is with the clip on the hinge end of the knife and carry it with the handle to the I side of my pocket
Keep it in the same pocket just take the pocket clip off and put it on the other side. It will keep the blade up against the outer seem of your jeans and away from your fingers. The only downfall is changing the way you pull it out of your pocket.
