We read this in Highschool, as part of the English prose syllabus-- and to listen to it now after more than 40 years later, it stirs so many memories from those days. I always tried to imagine how Foyots, the restaurant environment looked... A funny story and with a sweet revenge at the end! Very nicely read!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I always loved this story, as indeed I do all Maughams work. My very favourite short story of his is, "The Unconquered." 2nd favourite is "The Treasure." Your reading is brilliant, and I love all the paintings with which you illustrate the stories. Thankyou so much.
I very much enjoy heating Maugham's stories, but these provide the secondary pleasure of hearing common English spoken very oddly at times. They also offer the added pleasure of a game of "What's Wrong with This Picture?" Why does the waiter on the right have a bowl on his head? Why do the front couple have different partial floor coverings when no one else has any? Why are the other tables all set so closely together that no one can stand up? Why does the lady have a large meal with champagne while the gentleman is still looking at the menu? What's the siver thing infront of him? A cross between a teapot and a toaster rack? The woman just over his shoulder - is her head on her left shoulder? We should probably make a formal game out ofspotting the anomalies.
I have been a great fan and protector of women's liberation, or feminism, since I Saw a march on the street back '71 of Thiry of so pretty young women, who were very clearly raised on whole milk , shouting " burn your bra!". If a lady nowadays asks, me out for a luncheon, I always insist that she pays the bill, I wouldn't dare to offend her!!, long live feminism,I say👍 Anyway,,I don't eat much for luncheon 😂
