Dear Dr.Andrea Furlan , I have read your wonderful book and this helps me a lot to "conquer my chronic pain".Thank you very much! Good luck in all you have to do! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !
My sleep issues came first chronic pain 2nd can be a vivacious cycle but with a mind body approach it can get better and for me meditation on God's Holy Word helps with emotions 😊
Dr. Furlan .. In my situation I am affected in both ways....if the pain is more than usual during day I take a tramodol effervacent 50 before bed time. On some days I wake up with pain affecting my both legs...then rubbing pain releif cream etc..then stay awake for a long time.. I do have your book...and listening to you has helped me lot..my doctor has been treating me in a very systematic way for Fibromyalgia in the last 4 years....and I have improved a lot ,but I don't have a totally pain free day. Thank you verymuch for all your posts.❤❤❤❤
Thank you, Dr Furlan! This is very informative! I have both and, if I do get any sleep, it’s about an hour each time. I have sciatic pains and RTC. The RTC since more than a year ago but only recently diagnosed. In addition, I have a deviated septum and allergic rhinitis, so sleep doesn’t come easy.
My neck injuries from my cycling past have caused thin, bulging discs, deteriorated facet joints and pinched nerves. It's been 2 years with extreme chronic pain that prevents me from sleeping and enjoy my life. As soon as I lie down on the bed my symptoms aggravate making it impossible for me to sleep. Ocassionally I resort to tramadol but it has become ineffective. I try to avoid opioids because they have bad side effects. This week has been so bad that I haven't been able to sleep for 4 days, staying up all night. I feel very exhausted and stressed. I don't know what to do anymore. The doctors can only prescribe meds, nothing else. I tried relaxation but it is hard to do when you are in constant pain. I have bought your book several months ago. I followed the advice but my pain is not mitigating. I am in a constant state of inflammation.
Well, to be more accurate, while lack of restorative sleep has a clear and well documented effect on (psycho-neuro-endocrine-)immune system, so I'm not disputing that lack of sleep leads to worse health outcomes, I want to point out that a longitudinal study on its own still is only a story of correlation, not causation. It shows that sleep issues come *before* other health issues, but that doesn't mean the disturbed sleep is the *true root cause*. Fibromyalgia still is most likely an immune disorder, and the sleep disturbance might be just the first, most visible symptom that arrives years before other symptoms needed for a diagnosis.

I am sorry to hear that, please try to see a physiatrist, specialist like me.
Mine was pain first!
