- Oh boy. Supermaven has been acquired by Cursor, and I'm so hyped I get to break the news.

I'm glad this wasn't 20 minutes
lol fr
Yeah, now any time a 40+ minutes video drops I just sigh and move forward. I don't have 40 minutes to waste these days....
I prefer long form content
@@vvvvvvvvvwvas do I, but sometimes I also don't have 40 minutes to waste
That's why I watched it.
Nice to see one of Theo's clones from the sponsor segments get a spot on the couch in the main video
lmaoooo
Yeah! Definitelly a clone :D It is so funny to see people look like Theo :D
The truth is that all the Theo's in this vid are clones, real Theo is off surfing in Bali
Damn'it, now I can't unsee this....
Damn, this video is super tightly edited. Great job.
Thank you! I actually did this one myself for once lol
@@t3dotgg so your editors make the videos 40 minutes long?
@@thaizoolmao editor getting fired, glad the yapping was brought down, we got busy lives. Theo is my tech new and videos should be condensed down to important information.
We need an IDE that has inspections like jetbrains, AI integration like cursor and native supermaven support
and open source like vscode
And free
What can jetbrains inspections do that one cannot mostly do by an AI like copilot?
@ccash3290 It's not about AI it's about developer experience. all Jetbrains IDEs have awesome inspections that offer fixes/refactors when you need it. They also offer extra tools for moving components or safe deleting stuff.
When i sometimes use vscode for small edits, i really feel the lack of those features
@@ccash3290seconded
Thank you for showing me Cursor, it really helps me in my daily works by speeding up a lot of processes I'd do myself and the fact thst SuperMaven joins Cursor makes me even more happy!
I really wish that the AI coding platforms could support Zed instead of buying and eating each other and shoving people around to their editor. VSCode isn't bad, but the cognitive load is so big these days that I just get overwhelmed by it and Zed is so calming and lovely to work with. Ironically, this is what makes it a much better candidate for AI Coding Platforms IMHO
2:07 That's an unfortunate placement for the microphone.
Yeah, that was some casting couch sh*t lol
Man... If they teamed up with Zed, they would truly be a force like no other. But either way, more competition in the editor space is always a win! (nvim user btw)
100%, VS Code is so slow.
I think the difficult part is that Zed albeit a very good one, is really "just another editor". They took what already exists, and made it snappier but then there's Cursor which might not be as snappy, but they're doing new things
@ I think Zeds AI features are really good too, though
I've been really enjoying zed
Zed does have SuperMaven integration, though.
We got young primagen & young theo interview with Theo before GTA 6
i honestly think they can beat microsoft at this point (or get acquired for several billions)
I really hope they don't take that offer of extinguish if ever it occurs - can't spend that kind of money, and the benefit for many is so much better with Cursor and Supermaven joining forces and building the next editor. I am really excited for this.
It's just last struggle until MS kills both of them completely. MS already owns Github, VSCode, Azure & have heavily invested in OpenAI. They have more funds than Cursor can ever imagine. Also, Cursor uses OpenAI which runs on Azure owned by MS. MS will win without even trying.
What stops Microsoft from doing what they build as a plug-in for VSCode? What edge do they really have? They are starting from scratch again as they were stuck with a VSCode fork.
Microsoft have already taken notice and see much profit is at stake, I can only see them putting in more features into GitHub Copilot and continue giving these guys a really hard time. What comes next after Sonnet 3.5 and how both play their hand in what’s coming will ultimately decide a lot I believe.
@@dyto2287 In there recent copilot update. they also partnered with Anthropic and now claude sonnet is also there. the are following the cursor path. and AI is so simple these days to work as a wrapper over products. so they gonna soon compete neck to neck.
Since switching from Supermaven to Cursor, speed is definitely something I've been missing. If the Supermaven team can help the Cursor team figure that part out, I think they'll have what they need to take on Copilot, and stay ahead of the curve.
Cursor is already doing things that others weren't before, so exciting to see what's coming up!
I have legitimately never been this excited for a merger announcement before.
what a surprise! these seem like they should go hand in hand together, i'm actually really hyped because i use both of them
glad to see this. Been following Cursor and supermaven for while now!
The title and the thumbnail turned into a clickbait. Theo, why did you make it a secret? Your audience consists of professionals, they don't wanna spend time uncovering what the video is about, they wanna save time on things they are interested in. That's not an honest and professional news outlet move.
As someone who has a podcast, I don't get the move to make the guests hold their mics
I brought stands but we didn't have a table (it also looks hilarious)
@t3dotgg it does look look kinda funny
As a viewer, i don't see the big issue in this id rather people in the industry talk about these sort of topics rather than some big production podcast team
@@df23 I think it's important to make the guest comfortable. If you can make all the recording equipment disappear from their mental space, they become more engaged in the conversation. We usually use DJI mics which they can clip to their clothing and forget about them.
At least they're not holding Blue Yetis! 🤣
Super excited to see what they come up with next!
I already love cursor to the point i just don't want to switch back to anything else.
I'm using supermaven in neovim, but now I don't think this plugin will be maintained anymore
It will be! Check out my full interview for more details, they're fully committed to maintaining it
Hmm... The product that you know and love isn't going anywhere.
Where have I heard that before?
but even before the merger, supermaven team was working on their IDE, so nothing really changed for users of editors other than cursor
They already have been neglecting it. The Neovim plugin doesn't offer chat or the 'Fix with Supermaven' code action feature, all you get is autocomplete. No official reply on Github about it either since the question was asked back in June. Avante with an anthropic API key is about the best experience you can get in Neovim currently.
@@t3dotgg it will be the 2nd priority no matter what they say
Went to school with Michael, he's a great guy and it's awesome to see him and his team get the recognition they deserve!
Hey, watched some of your videos. Loved them. You have a new subscriber. Love from Colombia 🇨🇴
Nice format! Great news, i just very recently heard of Cursor from when their team visited the Lex Friedman podcast and it sounds really cool. Havent tried out the Supermaven either, but i will, today, now 😁 ONE suggestion tho! : when doing interviews, i would like to see you sit in front of and facing the ones you interview instead of in a line on the couch :)
Well, a lot of new tools are coming out to improve the productivity, but a lot of companies don't allow the developers to use them because they are scared of:
- Security and confidentiality concerns
- Licensing and legal risks
So I am wondering are these tools only for people who are working as a freelancers and only for personal projects, because in the corporate world I think it won't be soon enough that companies will start to allow them to be used during development.
Tools like these are catching on in enterprise. Copilot already has an "enterprise version" that handles a lot of those risks. These tools are too good for big companies to ignore, the alternative is small teams running circles around them.
This is the beauty of open source. They can fork it and use the ideas of the editor.
that tshirt is sick
one of the few commenta i nave ever written on TH-cam, Cursor is amazing. i would nave never ben abile to do what i do at my job and in my free time , i have written scripts for my own projects that would have taken me months. I did in a week time , I recommended cursor to a friend, he is a super basic learner, he managed to do a simple script for a task he wanted to do, he would have probably been able to do but never this fast! Cursor IS A GAME CHANGER. Seeing comments like ' never seen anyone using it ' , what would they do or use? do everything manually? use only autocompletes? copy paste switch apps constantly? Lmao.
great news for cursor
betting on them winning the entire ide market
Put a mustache on the guy on right, the middle guy will act as a mirror
Alright Jake, good work!
That’s how you position your startup to be acquired for 10B$ easy
So, what about the $12M Supermaven raised to create a new text editor? Are they refunding it to investors?
Because if not, they won't be using this money for what it was raised for.
I'm generally excited! I would love to use Cursor with the performance of Supermaven, but also at Supermaven's price instead of Cursor's double cost.
Tabnine was my first contact with tool that do good stuffs in IDE
Tabnine felt like Bing. Works but bloated
As a yearly subscriber of both I’m stoked. I had to disable supermaven in cursor. I can’t wait till they integrate it. Perfect marriage
The decision to create a new editor seems crazy to me
I don't see this working
So when is Cursor becoming fast as Supermaven? We want a date! 📆
3:59 It reminds me of Atom and Microsoft Moment
History repeats itself
Literally just bought a supermaven subscription 😂😂
Thanks for not wasting my time with a long video.
I'm gonna watch the interview
I just wish I could buy their pro plan with a South African credit card.
I still just want it in my VS Code where I have settings sync for my devices and all the extensions I need for a WSL 2 setup.
IDEs being built and dropped faster than JavaScript frameworks nowadays
I hope Supermaven will continue for zed editor
I don’t use Cursor. I don’t know anyone who stuck with it either.
I do.
I don't. It uses me.
I love it. Don’t tell me you prefer copilot?
@@AnthonyWebb7copilot's more than enough (emphasis on "more"). i don't want to be a proompter, i want to be a programmer
@@noname-dt6sv :)) I just use codeium for the free tier because sometimes I'm too lazy to format a bunch of stuff.
This is HUGE
Microsoft is going to buy Cursor. Calling it now.
Cursor needs to update its editor on bi weekly basis and fix issues better.
I need shirt! Where can I get it???
Okay going to just say it. Us Geeks can’t even sit on a bloody sofa without looking awkward… damn😂
Cursor gonna be big
Love Cursor, purchased a sub straight away , even though I have co-pilot through work.
The value you get from Cursor is well worth the price in itself, but trying to reduce the M$ consolidating of power is sweet in of itself.
I wonder how they felt using the mike you gave them?
fireship would've done it probably for 40 seconds max with meemes
I use supermaven for autocomplete feature. I hope they keep the autocomplete feature free. 😐
Okay, i love Supermaven on Zed, now i don't know if Cursor will kill it. 🤨
I know it's off topic BUT WHAT IS THIS MIC STAND i can't find one like this
Man, they could have had their AI correct their spelling… SECOND sentence, FIRST word, this hurts the eye.
How do you invest in these tech companies? I’m also interested
Those Shure mics are super heavy !
Absolutely love the editing on this video! I've used Supermaven for a while before being acquired, exited to see where this goes!
do you by any chance have a Theo face generator to put on every youtube thumbnail?
Awesome!
How do you get access to invest in startups like supermaven? Genuinely curious.
He’s a Y-Combinator alumni founder so he probably has relationships with founders & people in the Silicon Valley startup ecosystem
Thanks for your response it makes more sense now. Didn’t know Theo had gone through YC, cool.
I enjoy cursor but I have a personal Claude subscription already. You can't use the API key on a personal account. Doesn't make sense to pay twice for using the same model. Hopefully this story improves.
Excited, but I don’t think Cursor will ever make vim mode as good as Neovim, so hopefully supermaven will not abandon us
zed editor, try it. best vim mode ever
code completion is brainrot for programmers, change my mind
Can’t wait to code at the speed of AI 🏎
Could you, would you, talk to them about an affordable unlimited option? What they have on offer right now, feels extremely limiting. Especially when we could use our own API keys from OpenAI for ~30 a month.
You mean forked? not build right?
Is JetBrains lagging behind?
I wonder if that means anything to PearAI since they "support" Supermaven
Do you know if there are any plans for a Nvim plugin for cursor?
Can I use it in neovim?
Jesus that is an awkward away to sit in an interview!
cursor still suffers from the same unfamiliarity vscode does, it's just so hard to move to it
intellij was always netbeans but better, vscode is way too different to allow efficient switch, one would need to do it after working hours
Did Cursor really take a competing tool (that was free) off the market? They are SO scared, and rightfully so. They have no moat.
For me that should be forbidden, that destroy some innovation. supermaven annonced us that worked to build a new IDE. And we are still waiting
amazing
rip, vscode
The UI for both Supermaven and Cursor both suck though. I still get 10x better results just from copying/pasting to ChatGPT (which is a pain in the ass, but still faster than trying to get Supermaven or Cursor to be useful). Maybe I'm just using both of them wrong or something...
Who cares when there open sourced projects like cline
Which video is the Web Dev Cody refactor video?
More 20min+ videos, love the longer form deep dives!
cursor wins now
3:46 a what problem?
Widget
that's crazy
I was never excited for the supermaven bcz there was a lot of similar tools were coming. Then cursor got my attention for few months, bcz it was really so fast and state of the art AI editor. But after seeing copilot team to copying cursor features so fast and partnering with Anthropic to use cluade 3.5 (bcz or claude the cursor became that popular). Slowly I am loosing interest in cursor also. But I strongly in support of products who will kill these big giant tech monopolies.
Too costly to use either of them 🙃
They won.
Already subbed to supermaven, Do I have to pay for cursor subs too? 😢
Lmao I can see them getting acquired by Anthropic or Microsoft (regulators shouldn't allow this)
Is the supermaven editor just going to be another codium editor..
Is Jacob canadian?
those 3 huge studio mics, held by hand - it's HILARIOUS! Get some lav mics for interviews
Everyday, another AI bullshit.
Edit: “everyday, one less AI bullshit”
Technically this is one less AI thing 🤣
@ whaaaaaaaaaat you read my message LUL
But yeah this is true :D
WTF is wrong with VS Code? Why are people buying into forks of VS Code lol.
Because extensions are just that, extensions! You are too limited if you can't modify the entire IDE, duh!!!
@@cim8097 OMG. wow. How did I not think of that. Holly shits you are dumb, and I will let you solve that. You can use GPT for help too.
Because they are stupid.
And Companies can track your userdata better and get generally more money out of you if you use "their" software
Finally 6 minutes 🤕
Nooooo
Supermaven is fast but its output is pure trash. Codeium is better.
They acquired Neovim, thank me later
