*എട്ടാം ക്ലാസ്സിലെ ഒരു ഇംഗ്ലീഷു പാഠമാണ്. ഒരു നല്ല സത്യസന്ധനും കാരുണ്യവാനുമായ വെനീസിലെ കച്ചവടക്കാരനായ അന്റോണിയോയെ ചതിയിൽ കൂടെ ഉപദ്രവിക്കാൻ കച്ചകെട്ടിയിറങ്ങിയ ചതിയനായ ഷൈലോക്കിൽ നിന്നും രക്ഷപെടുത്തുന്ന ബസാനിയോ എന്ന സുഹൃത്തിന്റെ ഭാര്യ പോർഷിയ. ഒരു നല്ല സന്ദേശമാണ് ഷെക്സ്പിയറിന്റെ ഈ കഥയിൽ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ചതിയെ ചതി കൊണ്ടു നേരിടുക എന്ന തന്ത്രം പ്രയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. നല്ലവർ പല ആപത്തുകളിൽ പെട്ടാലും അവർക്ക് ആരെങ്കിലും തുണയായി വരുമെന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കിക്കൊടുക്കുന്ന കഥ. "കർമണ്യേവാധികാരസ്തേ മാഫലേഷു കദാചന.." എന്ന ഭഗവത് ഗീതയിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന ശ്ലോകം. "അവനവന്റെ കർമങ്ങൾ ഫലേച്ഛ കൂടാതെ ചെയ്യുക. പ്രകൃതി അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ജഗദീശ്വരൻ നിങ്ങൾക്കതിന്റെ പലമടങ്ങു പ്രതിഫലം തരും" എന്നു നമ്മെ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്ന മഹാനായ ഷെക്സ്പിയറിന്റെ നല്ല ഒരു മഹത്തായ കൃതി. കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത് പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് പതിമൂന്നുവയസ്സുള്ള ബാല്യകാലത്ത് പഠിച്ച് അറിഞ്ഞിരിക്കേണ്ട ഒരു നല്ല ആശയം. ജീവിതവിജയത്തിന് അത്യന്തം ആവശ്യമായ ഒരു ആശയം. എന്തു ചെയ്താലും എനിക്കിതു കൊണ്ടെന്തു കിട്ടും എന്നു ചിന്തിച്ചു ഏതു ജോലിയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ഇന്നത്തെ തലമുറക്കാർക്കു കൊടുക്കാവുന്ന ഏറ്റവും മഹനീയമായ ആശയം.*

**ഈ കഥയിൽ ഒരു തെറ്റുണ്ട്. യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ഷൈലോക് അന്റോണിയോയുടെ നെഞ്ചിലെ മാംസമാണ് വേണ്ടതെന്നാണ് കോടതിയിൽ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടത്. പോർഷ്യ ഇതിന് ഉത്തരമായി മാംസം നിങ്ങൾക് മുറിച്ചെടുക്കാം എന്നാൽ ഒരു തുള്ളി രക്തം പോലും പോകാൻ പാടില്ല എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ ഷൈലോക് തോൽവി സമ്മതിച്ചു. ഇതാണ് മൂലകഥ. ബാക്കി ശരിയാണ്....

This story is very interesting, but the climax (Act IV) is not correct, as the contract between antonio and shylock is that, if antonio is not able to pay the money, he should have to give 3 pounds of flesh from his body. But portia makes a condition in the last scene, that shylock can cut antonio's flesh as the bond is for flesh but not for a single drop of blood, and shylock fails for cutting flesh withot making single drop of blood. Rest of the Act plays Portia and Nerissa scold them for giving away their rings, pretending they had been given away to other women. Before long, they reveal themselves as the lawyers from the trial.
