Deflection of Beams || Deflection Limits

  • This video shows the deflection of beams as per American concrete institute codes. ACI recommends to use deflection limits as L/360 for live load and L/240 for dead load. These are the two limits which we should consider while designing our beam and taking servicibility criteria.

    Excellent vid. You havea gift of explaining. Is the ACI formula for minimum standard across the board or is it only used in specific areas (bridges, houses, etc)?

    I saw one video that video they said dead load + live load = l/240. Live load = l/360 But it's different. Which is this correct one?

    How do I know when to use the load factor of 1.6 for the live load. I was doing a similar problem and got it wrong because I considered the 1.6 load factor. Please help

      It depends on which load combination you are using, be careful while selecting the load combination.

    why do you multiply the length by 12? Also, where from the 5/384?

      He is multiplying by 12 to convert to inches; 5/384 comes the deflection formula 5/384xWL/EI

    What type of Beam? makes no sense? I-Beam, Square?, L, What about wall thickness?

      I studied this and used your equation, spent about 1 hour. You did a GREAT job, however at the very end I realized there were some things missing for what I needed to do. I was trying to estimate 4 x 4 square tube with 0.25 wall thickness. I'm not sure what the equation is for... but thank you.
