  • 'Free-range' egg farms that supply to supermarkets chains have been stripped of their RSPCA Assured status after an undercover investigation found hens living in 'appalling' conditions.
The investigation, conducted by Animal Justice Project (AJP), flew drones over three RSPCA-accredited farms and found that the 'free-range' hens were not let out on any of the multiple days that they filmed.
Hens were suffering from injury, such as prolapses and twisted necks and severe bullying, with one hen being ‘pecked to death’ by other hens on camera.
Dead bodies were left throughout the sheds for weeks, as skeletons were found littered across all farms.
Dr David Bull and Rosie Wright are joined by Animal Justice Project campaigner Tayana Simons to discuss.

So long as people just want to buy their food cheaply from supermarkets rather than produce it for themselves there will always be animal suffering.

When you eat a tomato straight from your garden, it tastes different than one usually bought in a store.
Well, fresh eggs are just the same way. People are paying way too much for what they think they are getting.
In the US, there are different levels and labels in which the standards are classified as Farm Fresh.
Organically grown produce limits the use of some synthetic chemicals, but they do use chemicals.
There are also no time periods for Free range. c/p
The USDA requires that “free-range” animals have access to outdoor areas, but there is no provision for how much time they must be allowed to spend outside or how much room they must be provided with to do so.
Again, people sit at tables in restaurants and are paying way too much.
Go to a farm and get some eggs if you can and see the difference. Delicious.

The RSPCA condones cruelty to certain animals - those whose flesh and products humans want to eat.

Chickens don't like the wind and rain and won't run round on grass if food is in coop haha and it's called a pecking order for a reason 👍

Oh come on, Talk TV, this is an awful report, we don't need headlines like "the plot chickens". Have a bit of compassion.

What I find awful about these shows is that they only give a few minutes to talk about this issue. They're a 24hrs news channel but they have to push on to the next story and all you get is 24hrs of headlines that barely scratch the surface or any real debate about anything. The entirety of news media is just becoming constant click bait.

She had to get the plant based thingy in didn't she? And no, without supplements there are problems with a plant only diet.

What supplements? Only vitamin B12. The chickens are probably given B12 along with other vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fatty acids. Sheep, cattle and pigs are also often or routinely given these supplements. You most probably get the benefits of those supplements when you eat meat, eggs and dairy. Not very natural, is it? Many non-vegan humans are low or deficient in B12. Anyone aged over about 50 should take a supplement or fortified food because they could lack sufficient stomach acid to make use of the B12 in animal products. Not necessary with supplements or fortified food.

Show the video evidence or I'll just put it down as another vegan trying to tell us what to do

Really? They've just shown the conditions. If they showed the footage they are talking about you can guarantee some people will complain.

The RSPCA must have seen the evidence or they wouldn't have suspended the farms.

@@nitramnagev7997they wouldn’t have because the RSPCA earn money from products bought from their assured farms. They approve these chicken farms, gas chambers for pigs and blenders for chicks.
