You are way more perceptive than on most run-of the mill React/Review channels. Great job picking up on a lot of the themes & subtext so early on! Looking forward to your insights on the coming episodes. The best thing about The Expanse is that it just keeps getting better!
Wow, thank you so much, that means a lot to me! And I've heard people say that the show is excellent during the first couple seasons and then just phenomenal in season 3. Considering I already think the show is of a very high quality, I'm looking forward to seeing how they'll continue to top themselves!
Nice observations about the water situation on Ceres. In the books, Belters can overlook and accept a lot of things that people do to each other. Due to their precarious living situation however, they have no sympathy or patience for people who through negligence or corruption, screw/disrupt the supply of air or water.
Thank you! That absolutely makes sense to me. I can see how living in a situation like this, Belters would be willing to make allowances for a lot of things people do that may otherwise earn them a lot of ire (such as security personnel taking bribes, perhaps? haha). But there are lines people just cannot cross if a society like that is going to be able to function in any way at all.
What you said about "One day it's gonna be us out there" is a thematic connection I never noticed and I've seen every episode 10 times. Good job. You also seem to have good insights into the character's motives. Great review. I think the reason I like watching Expanse reviews is because it allows me to vicariously relive my first time watching the show. I just had that thought FWIW.
I like your reaction style, and it's kinda fun to listen to your after watching thoughts, knowing what I already know. Like your thoughts on Miller, for example. The flipside is that it's hard to engage in conversation about things like that without going into spoiler territory.
Haha oh I totally understand that!!! One of my favorite reaction couples is Nikki & Steven. There were so many times during their GoT series (and now again, while they're watching Breaking Bad) that I've wanted to discuss certain things in the comments section but had to hold off to avoid spoilers. It's still fun though!
I'm really happy about that too! Now that I've seen the quality of the first handful of episodes, I must say, it would've been a shame for the series to end before its time.
@@MollyBeeReacts hahaha Molly, you have no idea yet! When you finally see where it would have ended had Jeff Bezos not saved it... You'll really appreciate the Save The Expanse campaign! Main reason is, The Expanse lives up to its name and continually expands! This show grows by leaps and bounds once we get to S2 and 3 ;)
Yay your back! Sorry that your cats were so sick, glad to hear they're all doing better. So happy your reacting to this and "True Detective", they are two of the greatest shows ever made while also being easily two the least reacted to series on youtube! It's absolutely mind-blowing how little attention The Expanse has gotten. Even with the fact that it was made by SyFy and that they never really did a good job publicizing the series, even with that factored in - it still shoulda garnered way more buzz than it's gotten. It seems as if it only attained a decent sized following when it got canceled and then revived by Amazon. Oh well... either way, it has finally started receiving the amount of hype that it rightfully deserves heading into it's 4th season and you'll be there for the whole ride!
Thank you very much - they're back to their playful, crazy little selves! Even though I've just begun with The Expanse, I can definitely see why fans would've been so frustrated over the past few years, seeing it receive little attention because it is excellent! I feel like today, with so many entertainment options available, that shows which most people would classify as falling into a "genre" like Science Fiction or Horror might have trouble attracting an audience unless there was a fairly big media marketing push behind it. I'm really glad Amazon did decide to keep it going! They have the money and reach to draw in viewers, even ones who might otherwise pass on it (similar to what Netflix was able to do with Hill House).
Nice! Excited to see you continue this one. As for the show starting off slow, I don't actually think it does. It pretty much jumps into the thick of it. But when you're further into the meat of any show or book series, it seems like the setup takes forever, so I think looking back it's just people hoping that if you don't like it right away that you'll stick with it to get to a lot of the most interesting parts. However, I don't think it's going to be an issue for you to stick with this one. In your post-episode reviews, you are grasping what is going on and paying attention to the characters well, so I definitely get a sense of your interest here. And I'm glad for that! This quickly became one of my favorite shows of all time.
That definitely makes sense to me! I know when I've tried to convince people to give shows I love a chance in the past, I've tried to prepare them ahead of time for any of the criticisms I've heard people give previously (even if I disagree with those criticisms) in the hopes they'll be able to look past those things if they think about them as well. You are absolutely right, I'm very interested in the show. I just finished episode 4 (posting reaction soon) and I can see why people said that if you get to the 4th episode you'll definitely be hooked!
Here by the grace of the Algorithm! After the first reaction, had to check out this one, and I think I'll binge them now. The Expanse is amongst my favorite shows of all time and I'm happy to hear others' thoughts of it! Oh, and subbed as well!
There is a lot of action and drama in this episode, it goes by quickly.... my opinion is this episode is actually the slowest episode of the series - as far as moving the story forward that is... but it builds up the characters of the 5 people on the Knight.... also, you start to see a pattern with Holden.... he clearly hasn't been in a position of leadership, he wants to do the right thing but doesn't necessarily have great judgement, and makes snap decisions that could have huge unintended consequences.... like responding to the SOS call, trying to go after that ship that destroyed the Canterbury, and sending the message at the end.
The authors described Holden as basically what happens if you end up with a D&D paladin in real life; good and evil are obvious in their world view, and thus are easy to react to, even when in real life there is far more gray in the middle.
It doesn't feel as slow as it could in less talented creator hands. Scenes and small sub plots that are mainly world-building and exposition come with enough drama and action to engage us viewers, like for example the water theft scene and the gravity torture.
That definitely makes sense to me. I tend to find all of his reactions understandable and do not think I'd necessarily disagree with him about all of them in the end but it is clear that sometimes his quick decisions lead him to overlook some of the nuances that can be found in any situation. Good thing he has Naomi! haha
Wow, what an amazing reaction again. I enjoy immensely your post-episode analyses, packed with insights into the story and into the characters and their motives; insights and details that I’ve been to some extent aware of myself, but never really put them into words like you did. I agree with another commenter that this is the „slowest” episode of the whole show - of the first three seasons, to be precise :) -, but I would rather say that this is the only „slow” episode, and still very, very good. Also I agree with Molly that the first episode isn’t at all slow, it just might seem so because besides a lot of action it was jam-packed with information and it’s the viewer who has to slow down a bit in order to process all of it. And the next episode, number three definitely is’nt slow at all, it’s just that the fourth is so crazy that episode three might seem a bit slow compared to that. So, what can I say as a conclusion? Thank you, Molly, you made my day again.
Thank you so, so much! That's incredibly kind of you to say! I think that my obsession with Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire has prepared me for this haha. I cannot tell you how many hours I've spent analyzing every little detail of those stories both online and during in person discussions (primarily with my sister and a couple close friends). I have a great appreciation for fiction that involves both rich characters and a well-developed, intricate universe. So, when people told me that The Expanse was similar to A Song of Ice and Fire in those ways, I was very intrigued and decided to make sure I was paying careful attention to everything that was happening. I know with A Song of Ice and Fire that little things the characters have said and done at one point and/or small details about the world itself, can come back later and prove to have immense meaning, so I'm doing my best to keep my eyes and ears open and to absorb as much as possible here, in anticipation of that proving to be the case with The Expanse as well :)
Not very often you get a show that dedicates a whole episode to its characters trying to survive the aftermath of an explosion that DIDN'T hit them. Love how all the shrapnel from a massive ship that just blew apart didn't just disappear. I don't think Holden was accusing Mars of anything. He was just putting them on notice that it would look awfully suspicious if the survivors of the attack were to disappear after being picked up by a Martian ship.
I've seen all three seasons of the Expanse already, and gave it another watch after S8.E6 of Game of Thrones. I really needed to get over the show-lag caused by all the show-warping D&D put me (maybe us?) through. Love your reactions and after-review of the episodes! No worries ... I won't pimp the show so you can experience this awesome story first-hand!

To say much more would be a spoiler, so I'll just say that I love how wide and deep the character arcs are on this show, even for relatively minor characters.

He definitely seems to jump into action very quickly, sometimes based entirely on emotion, which could be very dangerous! He is obviously trying to do the right thing but sometimes he just needs to breathe a little and think things through, in my opinion.
@@MollyBeeReacts Holden's favorite book was Don Quixote. A tragedy really, that he saw as humorous because of how much of himself he saw in Don Quixote. A knight in shining armour, trying to choose the light over the dark in a world of shades of grey.
