Chris Barrie joins the team maintaining the last remaining airworthy Vulcan Bomber, the most famous of Britain's three post-war V-Bombers (Victor and Valiant being the others).
It's size, range and iconic delta-wing design made the Vulcan an instant icon. A powerful symbol to the Soviet Block that Great Britain remained a force to be reckoned with and the figurehead of the country's nuclear deterrent until Polaris submarines took over that role.
Timewarp... The Vulcan's finest hour came much later. In 1982 two Vulcan Bombers flew the longest range bombing raids in history (at that time) during the Falklands War, flying 6800 miles from Ascension Island to the Falklands.
What Makes it Great... Arguably the greatest ever delta wing, a machine that exudes raw power.

While stationed at RAF ( USAF ) Bentwaters in 1971 we had an open house and a Vulcan was present on display. I was on duty and we spoke with the Vulcan crew who invited us to see the cockpit. Not much room up there for such a big aircraft. The crew were great and really showed us around. A beautiful aircraft which we would occasionally watch making touch and go landings at the base ....a true legend

That shot at 3:12 of Vulcan standing on her tail and going vertical, I saw that happen at an air show at Wroughton near Swindon in Wiltshire in the 1990's.
A Sensational display. Vulcan slowly taxiid out and stood 100 feet from me and made a bit of noise... :) Then she wound up the engines and and I have never felt the ground shudder like it did, Vulcan let go the hand brake and orff she went and had got a short way down the runway where she did that "standing on her tail". Sensational.
Saw a 2-ship do the same out of Cranwell. Incredible sight, and sheer power.

Beautiful plane. I think it's more muscular looking than the Concorde and maybe alittle sexier. Really a great looking plane.
Back in 1982 I was living in Toronto and saw one of these bombers do a fly over. I remember it for two reasons #1 it looked like a flying bat and #2 it sure was loud.

The Vulcan gets good publicity, due to it's looks. It was unable however to fly supersonic, unlike it's nearest rival, the Handley Page Victor, which achieved that easily. I speak from experience!

Superb. I believe it was the not the best performing of the thre proposed 'V' bombers. The Valiant being the worst and the Victor being the best in all aspects. Gooberment meddling and cost cutting requirements meant the Avro offering was accepted into main-role service. (yeah yeah yeah and the fatigue life of the Victor was its achilles heel but other was was the best aircraft for the job). Lets havea program about the Handley Page Victor.
The climb rate and manoeuvrability of the Vulcan were without doubt superior, top speed, bomb load and altitude capability went to the Handley Page Victor 😊

Odd to think that was designed by the same person,Roy Chadwick that designed the Lancaster. Both brilliant designs. And had UK government modified Vulcan it might still be on service just Boeinge B52 As it stands Vulcan only did what it was built during the Falklands Wal 1982

They did it on two separate simulation War games.

this plane couldn't pass over La Manche without Moscow noticing it......I always thought...as I heard many pilots say...you fly low as possible to avoid radar..not as high as possible....these people have no friggin idea what they are talking about
Go and do some research, they moved from high to low altitude after Garry Powers was shot down
He's talking about the post-war thinking, late 40s and throughout the 50s. Later they realised Soviet radar and missile technology was so advanced they'd have to go in at low altitude. Fortunately the Vulcan was very capable at both.
Britian's coolest WWII bomber And yet there were over 5 times as many B52's that were longer, wider, taller more powerful, longer range, heavier load capacity with virtually the same speed and max ceiling. I'll never understand why Britain didn't just buy 136 B52's ?
Vulcan is more maneouverable, especially at low altitude, and had more chance of evading Soviet air defences. Vulcans outperformed B52s regularly in NATO excercises. Look up Mark Felton's video "When Britain nuked America TWICE!"
@@markieboy1983 Please, you or anyone else can't feasible argue the Vulcan was a better, more capable or more proven aircraft. It simply wasn't. But it is like arguing would you rather have a GMC or a Ford truck. Both will get the job done. At 55K ceiling, the Vulcan didn't have to worry to much about avoiding Soviet aircraft. I suggest you just read the specs. for an actual comparison or look at the actual times each have been used in conflicts since the 50's.
