Thanks Doug. I snagged the last FTDX10 from my local HRO and was in business an hour later with this amazing radio. I had been watching this playlist for the last week. This was a Gold mine of information.
Hi Jim! Tutorial videos 1-39 are public. The rest of the tutorial videos are over at www.PATREON.com/N4HNH, along with other exclusive content. There are 97 FTdx10 tutorial videos thus far on the Patreon site. Most of the operating techniques I teach for the other Yaesu radios can also apply to the FTdx10.
I've been a general class operator without an HF rig for three years. (I have been very active with my Yeasu FTM-400XDR and, more recently, an FT5DR.) I have spent many months watching various videos, intending to make the best purchase possible for an HF radio that I'd be happy with for a long time. Tonight, I bought the FTdx10 while it was on sale. Your videos were completely influential and I appreciate them greatly. Thanks so much for what you (and Joel) have done to guide my purchase and further my interest and enjoyment. Between your wonderful ability to impart complex information, the features and capabilities of this model, and the price-point obtained, I am one hundred percent confident in my decision to buy this radio and I haven't even unboxed it yet.
Doug, thank you for explaining and showing us the step by step effects of on the received signal using the Attenuation + IPO + RoofingFilter + RFGain reduction and then dipping your toe into the Digital Noise Reduction. Looking forward to viewing the next in this series! Kudos.
You’re very welcome! No radio is perfect but the FTdx10 gets very close to perfect. You will find over 50 videos on my channel related to the FTdx10. Look for the FTdx10 playlist. But also keep in mind that many of the techniques I show with other radios can be applied to the FTdx10. 73, de N4HNH
This radio was just delivered to my house yesterday. I cant thank you enough for this wonderful instructional set of video's. You have great explanations.
I recently got my General and first HF radio, this FTdx10. I can't thank you enough for this video series, I'm sure they are great for old hams to learn the new bells and whistles their new radio has. But to someone new to Ham like myself they have been invaluable. Thanks again for all your work.
Recently purchased this radio. I will be watching the whole series. Thank you so much for taking the time to produce these videos! Studying for my general, so you will hear me on HF very soon!!
Congratulations! You chose wisely. Fun radio. I look forward to hearing you on the air. Don’t forget, technicians can operate SSB between 28.300 and 28.500 at up to 200W. 10 meters was open yesterday. I haven’t checked today. The complete FTdx10 series is at: www.Patreon.com/N4HNH 73, de N4HNH
Just bought one of theses, and watching some of your videos helped swing it for me. Now going to plough through the series whilst I wait to set my shack up.
Thanks for the great video. I have had my eye on the FTDX10 for a few months now and it will be my next HF radio. I learned a lot in this video, not just about the FTDX10, but about the setting on HF radios in general.
I’m so glad you found the video helpful. And thanks for letting me know. The main focus of my channel is operating techniques, with a few entertaining videos thrown in too. 73, de N4HNH
Congratulations Cheryl! I think you will enjoy it. Displaying on my big screen TV is breathtaking. It’s not just another pretty face though. It can receive better than just shot every radio ever made. 73, de N4HNH
Thanks for letting me know Mike! I appreciate the positive feedback. Note: Don’t install the update. Yaesu is working on a new update. The April update accidentally broke band-stacking and the ability to change bands via the MPVD ring. 73, de N4HNH
Great work Doug! Loved speaking to you last night and can't wait to see the rest of these videos!! Shipped off the 890 today and getting ready to order the x10.
Thanks so much for covering all this information! It's wonderful that you're willing to teach those of us who need it (like myself) what some of these features mean and how they work. Too often, presenters will assume their audience is up to speed on everything. In short, you're an excellent Elmer, and I appreciate it. Cheers and 73!
Thank you for letting me know you find my channel helpful! There is a glossary available for Executive and VIP Patreons. It explains common terminology, Q signals, and what the various knobs and buttons are for on a modern transceiver. 73, de N4HNH
Thank you Doug for this fantastic video. It helped me to understand the Radio a lot better. I got a FTDX10 from my passed away friend. Never had a Yeasu before, but now I am a big fan of this Transciever.
Thank you for letting me know. The videos are numbered, ranging from basic operation to more advanced. I removed Video #33 because too many people misinterpreted it and I was having to spend too much time addressing that. It’s okay though because a later video addresses that subject. There are approximately 70 videos in the FTdx10 playlist. The more you master that transceiver the more you will understand why Yaesu outsells everyone and there is not even a close second. And I say that objectively. I’m not a Yaesu fanboy. I just want the most for my money and Yaesu almost always wins that contest. 73 and welcome to the channel! Doug
@@n4hnhradio Doug, there are long nights waiting for me hihi. 😁 Thanks for the time and effort you spend for these great videos. I'll study them in the next days. 73 from Germany, DO7RU Ralf

Harry Elwell | K2ATX recommends you highly. You’ve got fans at HRO. anyways I’ll be watching all of your ftdx10 videos in order now. Thanks for the encyclopedic knowledge on the radio.
Just found your channel and have been a HAM for years. I currently have the Yaesu 450D and am looking to upgrade, and this is one of my top choices. Great video explaining the radio and it's functions. KE8CTG
I’m glad you find the video helpful. There are over 130 videos about the FTdx10. There are 98 videos thus far in the tutorial series. The first 39 are available on TH-cam. The rest are in the FTdx10 collection at: www.Patreon.com/N4HNH You can watch them in order.
I am a new ham, and the first/only transceiver I have purchased and started to use is the Yaesu FTDX10. A few weeks ago you had a Yaesu FTDX10 playlist that I bookmarked and had started to view. I got thru the first 3. The playlist was very helpful and I was looking forward to watching the rest of them. Unfortunately your Yaesu FTDX10 playlist seems to have been deleted. The videos are still on TH-cam but they aren't available in any ordered playlist anymore. Hopefully deleting the playlist was an accident, and if so I hope you will recreate it. Regardless, I appreciate your sharing information with us.
Ok.. finally stopped kicking the can down the road..went ahead and bought the FTdx10.. arrived 2/3/23.. my birthday in fact..after a night and one full day i can say, i am quite impressed... AND pleased.. i have higher than normal noise, but i am hearing sigs i dont usually hear.. compared it last nite to IC R75 and FT 891 listening on 75 meters..same antenna, coax switch.. quick changeover.. adequate comparison.. icom didnt hear qso at all.. 891 heard but not good listening.. dx10 was really comfirtable copy.. Nvr thot i'd want a waterfall.. i was wrong.. Pleased so far.. thanks for the series OM. always told myself i'll get a good radio next time i buy.. suddenly realized i'm 79.. this is likely my last radio and solar cycle. I may die a happy old man😏 Thanks again..
@@n4hnhradio .. I hate to sound like a heretic.. I fully realize that the dx10 is a superior radio.. but it's gonna be hard for me to break away from my ft891.. it's so much simpler to use..but I realise it's not the superior radio..
You won’t get an argument from me on that. I like the FT-891 so much I bought two. I bought the first one in 2018, when they were $579.95. I used that one for SOTA hikes. In 2019 I bought the one for my truck. I’ve also used the first one as a base station, with a MD-100 desk mic. You probably saw those videos in the FT-891 playlist. And I like the menu system in the FT-891. The way I operate in my truck, using memory tune, I rarely touch anything but the multiknob and the VFO. In the video where I put the receiver of the FT-891 up against the FTdx10, FTdx5000MP, and the IC-7300, the FT-891 beats the IC-7300 and it fairs very well against the FTdx10 and the FTdx5000MP.
@@n4hnhradio 😁😁OK.. Now I don't feel so guilty.. I have made one opr change today that I feel better with .. I set the waterfall to fix instead of cursor.. shudda done that right away.. much less distracting to me.. my age and my memory don't do well with distraction..
Verdict is in.. the FTdx10 passes muster..25 days of daily use.. I haven't used another receiver over an hour or two total in that time..overcame ergonomic snags, and hve learned to use the little tricks more easily.. blv I'll keep it🙂
@N4HNH I Really enjoy this Video series on this Great radio (Yaesu FTdx10) and other Videos you have made for your Channel. I just purchased the FTDX10 and a book (Radiotoday guide to the YAESU FTdx10). I plain on reading the Manual & book with watching your very well done series on the FTdx10, so I can master all the functions and ability's of the radio. Thank you Sir for the teaching work and video production. I have leaned a lot from You & I really appreciate it. Thank You N4HNH 73s📻
@@n4hnhradio Thank you N4HNH. I plain on watching all your Videos on FTDX10 and the FT-710 & your other Videos as well. You Are very thorough and explain everything well. Thank you again for you hard research work.
Jay, I just want people to get the most from their equipment and show that much fun can be had without breaking the bank. I’m glad you find the videos helpful. Please keep in touch. I would like to hear of your exploits. You truly can work the world with 100W and wire. I’ve never own a beam for ham radio. All wire antennas excerpt my Cushcraft R-5 vertical. It works best on 10, 12, and 15m, but the wire can often beat it too. 73, Doug
Thanks for the great Video, your description of the ATT, IPO, R. Fil and ACG was great. From what I have seen Yaesu seems to really get this right, although all new radios by the major manufactures seem to be pretty good. I think its the understand of the radio, settings and operator skill that can really make the radio shine. In your series on this radio could you cover optimizing your transmit signal for phone, Bob Heil had some videos on it but I think you teaching style would lend to the subject well. Thanks again
Awesome video just replaced my ft710 with a dx10 I love it. One question I'm running a ldg z100a antenna tuner it plugs into my linear port and when I set my internal to external my one in my radio still works lol
The FTdx10 has separate Linear and Tuner ports. The LDG doesn’t track the VFO during receive, like MFJ auto-tuners do (i.e. MFJ-939Y or MFJ-998). The Tuner port supports bidirectional communications between the transceiver and the antenna tuner. LDG chose not to take advantage of that bidirectional communications capability. The menu selection in the FTdx10, to choose an external antenna tuner, only applies to the Tuner port. It causes the Tuner button on the FTdx10 to control an external antenna tuner, like the MFJ-939Y or the MFJ-998, if such a device is plugged in. The LDG is plugged into the Linear port. The LDG is only using the Linear port for a transmit ground. The LDG only senses the frequency change when you transmit. It then records any previous match parameters that you recorded during a “Train Your Tuner” setup procedure. I have a video about that. The Tuner port also provides a transmit ground. I don’t know why LDG chose to tie up the Linear port for a tuner function. The Linear port also sends band change data to a linear amplifier. It is best to hook an antenna tuner to the Tuner port, so a linear amplifier can be connected to the Linear port. The exception would be in the case of something like the Elecraft KPA-1500, where the antenna tuner is integrated into the linear amplifier. It gets its data, and transmit ground, from the Linear port. The Elecraft KPA-500/KAT-500 combo works similarly. It uses the Linear port for antenna tuner and linear amplifier control. Just be sure to keep the internal tuner in the FTdx10 off when using an external antenna tuner. Don’t ever touch the Tuner button. You don’t want the internal antenna tuner to compete with the external antenna tuner.
Indeed it is. The FTdx10 is a great radio. There are a few minor things I would hope to see improved but those are nitpicks. When a receiver is that good, I can overlook minor nitpicks. 73, de N4HNH
I just worked a CW station that I couldn’t have even heard with a lesser radio than the FTdx10. The 300Hz roofing filter helped too. The signal report was 319, but he was really 309. He was buried in the noise floor. I used DNR, APF, manual notch, the 300Hz roofing filter, and 50Hz digital filter to pull him out. He was running QRP 2,000 miles away. 73, de N4HNH
@@n4hnhradio I am working my way through the playlist one at a time, as well as the downloaded manual. This is an impressive radio, and I thought my 7600 was pretty good. May be time for some new gear...
Just picked you up on 40 meters and heard you got a dx10. Good deal. I've learned many things from your 5000 videos and applied them to the dx10. Tried to raise you right when you signed off but I didn't catch you. Happy birthday to your wife by the way.
Thank you! I’m sorry I had to cut and run. I’m at dinner with my wife and I saw your message pop up. I let her read your comment. She thanks you, John! I won’t be replacing the 5000 with the FTdx10. The FTdx10 is a loaner. But it’s a mighty impressive radio. 73, de N4HNH
Really appreciate your very methodical step by step video. I am on the fence about moving from an FTdx3000 which I bought in 2019 and I think I avoided the 7300 for some of the reasons you mentioned. But the FTdx10 seems to be a great choice to compensate and for a reasonable price not the FTdx101 or IC7610 range. Thanks again 73
The FTdx10 is a game-changer for radios priced under $3,000. As with most radios, there are nitpicky quirks. But where it truly counts, the FTdx10 is best in class. On Rob Sherwood’s receiver test data list, it ranks higher than radios that cost over $13,000. 73, de N4HNH
Hi Douglas. I want to thank you for the excellent video’s you make on the ftdx10. For me it makes understanding the manual and the functions of the radio just so much easier. 👌🙏73 PD5I
did you see the Y note about the flex that disqualifies it from #2 on the sherwood report? the production flex wasn't as sensitive as the special one sent for testing.
I’ve been preaching that since the FTdx10 was released. I’ve also talked about it in numerous videos. I still don’t understand why Rob won’t move the Flex 6700 down to position 18, where it belongs, along with the Flex 6600.
My only gripe with this rig is the mic jack. I really wish they (the big three) would keep those cheap plastic rj45 connectors on the low end 2m/70cm stuff. High price/quality hf rigs should ALWAYS have the standard 8 pin foster connector.
There are a few sample videos that are public. The full series of 100 videos (thus far) is at: Patreon.com/N4HNH You must join as an S7 or an S9 in order to have access to the FTdx10 collection of videos.
Not yet Chuck. But I have to give this little guy kudos . I still prefer having knobs, and 200W, and a real meter, and knobs, and two receivers, and knobs, and mu-tune, and knobs. 73 my friend.
Thanks for the video! Curious what your opinions will be. I've had a 10 for a couple months now and love it. I do wish they had this radio in more of a FTDX-3000 size case, but maybe in time... Other than a couple small quirks that I'm sure will be fixed with firmware upgrades, I am very happy with it. 73, NJ0Q
I’m impressed with it thus far, out of the box. I will be digging deeper in future videos. It is intended to be a smaller “field day” version of the FTDX101D. So, for those who want a base station sized version, the FTDX101D is the choice. But hey, this can be a base station too! Thanks for your comment! 73, de N4HNH
Thank you...I like a lot of others on here just ordered one of these. I have a general radiotelephone operators license and have never used it for ham radio...I'm an ex FAA A&P mechanic. I got it because it is required to work on aircraft avionics. Now that I'm a geezer with a lot of time....why not ham...lol
Welcome to amateur radio. In have the GROL as well. It was required for me to be able to work on radios at Motorola. It was at Motorola where I met so many hams and was encouraged to get a license for amateur radio. Have you already taken the amateur radio license exams?
I use an Astron RS-35A. It is a linear power supply rated for 13.8vDC at 35A maximum. I prefer a linear power supply over a switching power supply. Some switchers can be noisy. 73, de N4HNH
Good evening, I sure have FTDX-10 in my hands. So excited. Have alot of things I need to improve my CW. Do you know of a app to get me up to speed. I feel worst than a novice. Like starting over from day one. One step at a time. Just wish my health was better. Still haven't figured out how to get on Petrocon. Will in time.
I plan to do a comparison of the DNR between the two. The DNR in the FTdx101D didn’t seem as good as the one in the 5000. But both are great. The FTdx101 still had the “watery” digital artifact when I compared it to the FTdx5000MP. Maybe the DNR algorithms are improved in the FTdx10. I heard that the new firmware update for the FT-891 is improved. The FTdx10 uses the same DSP chip as the FT-891, FT-991A, and FTdx101D/MP. The chip is from Texas Instruments. I suspect that the improvements in the FTdx10 sparked the update of the FT-891. I haven’t installed the update in my FT-891 yet. I want to shoot a before and after video when I update the FT-891. 73, de N4HNH
@@n4hnhradio I am looking forward to the comparison very much. My Hex Beam is being built as we speak, and I shall use my FT891 initially, but then I must decide upon an HF base rig.
John, I really do think the FTDX10 is a game changer. For under $2,000 it’s hard to believe the capabilities. But of you want simultaneous dual receive, you have to look at the big brother, the FTdx101D. 73, de N4HNH
@@n4hnhradio Doug, honestly, if Yaesu released an IC9700 competitor in the same chassis with 2/70/23 we wouldn't even have this conversation. I can still buy the 5000MP new here, and that's the choice I am agonising over.
I still like the 5000MP best, because it can do everything the FTDX10 does but with knobs. And it has a variable preselector and 2 separate receivers. I never realized what an advantage it is to have two receivers until I started chasing rare CW DX stations who use split. I can temporarily turn on the B receiver to find where the other stations who are chasing the DX are transmitting. The CW DXers don’t always listen just 1kHz up. I listen for the other chasers and then I know where to transmit at with my B transmitter. I think Sherwood should have reviewed the 5000MP. Their review was only the 2010 version of the 5000. 73, de N4HNH
KD6NBC - Great video on the FTdx10! Very informative. I'm just learning to use mine. Question: With all the receive settings (ATT, IPO, etc), which settings will give me a true signal report from an incoming transmission on the S meter?
The S-meter is calibrated with AMP1 enabled and no ATT. But remember that S meters vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and sometimes radio to radio. They are more or less relative. I shot a whole video about S-meters, Decibels, and amplifiers. You might want to check it out. th-cam.com/video/AY2U6o0mblI/w-d-xo.html 73, de N4HNH
Me too, but this radio is impressing me. I prefer a bigger base station, with more control via knobs. But I would like to have one of these as a backup to my 5000, since this one can be powered with 12 to 13.8VDC. That comes in handy when the power is out. 73, de N4HNH
I being respectful it sounds tinny on receve and hollow sounding as well I stick to my ft991a or my ic7300. Dont like the SPECTRUM scope👎the sensitivity if sounds like my ears are stuffed up.
This isn’t live. The radio has been out of the box for 3.5 years. And the castaways on Gilligan’s Island were just actors. They didn’t actually need to be rescued.
@ N4HNH I was looking at Elecraft. And they sure are nice Radios. I sure would like to get one . nice SDR radios. there K4 Transceiver is very nice and come in 3 options. Very costly rigs, but very nice radios with lots of input like the Yaesu FTDX101D/MP. If I had the money Saved right now for the Elecraft I would be purchasing the Yaesu FTDX101MP for sure. I just thought it was interesting there top rig the K4HD was made a lot like the Yaesu's FTdx10/101D/MP dual superheterodyne, SDR, FTDX10, FTDX101D/MP with the Yaesu's having a 9MHz IF The K4HD has SDR, dual superheterodyne and has filters Like the FTDX10,101D/MP. Elecraft calls there K4's hybrid designs to. Just thought you might find this interesting . from there site:: Model K4 Basic K4 transceiver provides 160-6 m, all-mode coverage; 100 W output; five receive RF sources; and wideband dual watch, allowing the main and sub receivers to be set for the same or different bands. Model K4D Adds KRX4 option, with a second set of band-pass filters and additional direct-sampling ADC module. This allows the two receivers to use different antennas - a requirement for diversity receive. Having two sets of band-pass filters also optimizes signal handling when the receivers are on different bands and/or antennas. Model K4HD Includes all of the above, plus our dual superhet module, the K4HD. Ideal for competitive field day, contesting, and DXpedition stations. Each superhet receive section includes two crystal filters: one SSB/data bandwidth, one CW bandwidth. The superhet’s 8 MHz IF has an excellent dynamic range, so additional crystal filters are not required. And the Icom 7851 the top Icom has a mixer called (local oscillator)to get a contester & DXers edge radio like the Yaesu's FTDX10/101D/MP. I guess my pointe to all this is Yaesu give you a Hell of a lot of Radio with the FTDX10 and at a very reasonable $ Price. The way thing are I think they may raise it's price some eventually. Happy New Year to You N4HNH, I still watch all your FTDX10 video & a lot of them more than once always looking for a new one. Out of all my Radios the FTDX10 is my favorite and gets fired up every day.
Hi Jay! A member of the Elecraft technical support staff told me about the HD version back in May of 2020. He expected it to beat the FTdx101D/MP. I said, “that’s a tall order.” I spoke with Eric Schwartz at the Huntsville Hamfest in August 2022 about the K4HD and when it might be released. He said in about 6 months. The HD is a plug-in module for the K4D that will add the superheterodyne front end. I asked him about his expectations regarding the dynamic range. You can see his response in the Huntsville Hamfest video. It’s interesting that the K4D doesn’t even beat it’s predecessor, the K3S, in the dynamic range ranking on Sherwood’s list. Your comment was prevented from posting due to a word the filter caught. Please remove that word before the filter flags the comment again. This is a good subject to cover in a comment. Just need to keep the TH-cam filter from flagging it again.

@@n4hnhradio That's terrific! Thanks very much for letting me know.

Verdict is in.. the FTdx10 passes muster..25 days of daily use.. I haven't used another receiver over an hour or two total in that time..overcame ergonomic snags, and hve learned to use the little tricks more easily.. blv I'll keep it🙂

Thanks for the great Video, your description of the ATT, IPO, R. Fil and ACG was great. From what I have seen Yaesu seems to really get this right, although all new radios by the major manufactures seem to be pretty good.
Yes all ok now great video. Many thanks
Great!
Impressive difference with ATT, IPO, RF gain, and DNR engaged.
Indeed it is. The FTdx10 is a great radio. There are a few minor things I would hope to see improved but those are nitpicks. When a receiver is that good, I can overlook minor nitpicks.

My only gripe with this rig is the mic jack. I really wish they (the big three) would keep those cheap plastic rj45 connectors on the low end 2m/70cm stuff. High price/quality hf rigs should ALWAYS have the standard 8 pin foster connector.

And it would also be useful to understand how the DNR compares to that in the 5000. I am asking a lot, I know 😔
I plan to do a comparison of the DNR between the two.

You might want to check it out.

get it out of the box and get on with it.
I just thought it was interesting there top rig the K4HD was made a lot like the Yaesu's FTdx10/101D/MP dual superheterodyne, SDR, FTDX10, FTDX101D/MP with the Yaesu's having a 9MHz IF
The K4HD has SDR, dual superheterodyne and has filters Like the FTDX10,101D/MP. Elecraft calls there K4's hybrid designs to. Just thought you might find this interesting . from there site::
Model K4
Basic K4 transceiver provides 160-6 m, all-mode coverage; 100 W output; five receive RF sources; and wideband dual watch, allowing the main and sub receivers to be set for the same or different bands.
Model K4D
Adds KRX4 option, with a second set of band-pass filters and additional direct-sampling ADC module. This allows the two receivers to use different antennas - a requirement for diversity receive. Having two sets of band-pass filters also optimizes signal handling when the receivers are on different bands and/or antennas.
Model K4HD
Includes all of the above, plus our dual superhet module, the K4HD.
I said, “that’s a tall order.”
I spoke with Eric Schwartz at the Huntsville Hamfest in August 2022 about the K4HD and when it might be released.
