I grew up in Europe. I remember my father harvesting baby black eye peas before they started the indentations and we would steam them like green beans and then toss them with oil, vinegar, garlic, salt and pepper. I liked them so much better then green beans.. I miss them... Thank you for the video, it brings back good memories..
Omg YES, I also planted a bunch of supposed "bush" beans that 100% started climbing everything around them! I think from now on I'm a just have trellises ready for any kind of bean, lol Thanks for this video, this is my first time growing cowpeas so I had no idea when to harvest them!
I am so glad this was helpful. I think I will do the same and just trellis all beans. I am growing purple hull peas and they are everywhere....but they were suppose to be bush beans 😀
The same thing happened to me and I had planted them using square foot gardening techniques so you can imagine the mess I have on my hands! I agree - prepare with a trellis no matter what the package says!
I love shelling beans, it’s a wonderful time to tell the family stories. I love them fresh or dried. With rice and collards on New Years Day they’re the best.
So agree. We use to shell and laugh on the front porch of my grandparents house. All the cousins and yes definitely have to have them on New Year's Day. Thank you so much for watching!
I couldn't find any black eyed peas at Home Depot so I used dried beans from the grocery store an d they are beautiful! Just got my first bloom yesterday.
I love this fresh black eye pee. I don't find them in market. This year I planted some. Grow food but still I am waiting for flowers. No luck yet. I planted from regular dry pees. Not from seeds so not sure I can get pees. Thanks for video.
Thanks so much for the info! I just decided to add black eyed peas to my garden, this year will be my biggest garden yet. Since everything that’s going on with covid-19, I want to stay out of the grocery store as much as possible.
You are making a great decision!!! They are perfect fresh and dried and add nitrogen to your soil as well. I definitely will be growing them again this year. Thank you so much for watching!
Awesome information 😎 I just learned cow peas and blackeyed peas are the same bean. I think I'll be making this one of my staple plants 🤩 Thanks for sharing!
You have a very soothing voice 😊. I am going to plant another sort of peas, they look like cowpeas but are no black eye peas. We eat them fresh or dried. Greetings from a sister in Suriname 🇸🇷, South America
Thank you so much! I am glad that the video was helpful and I appreciate you watching! We just planted our last sowing of cowpeas and they are already taking off. I hope you give them a try and I wish you much growing success. Thank you for watching!
Nice video, thank you.❤️ I am growing Pinkeye Purple Hull cow peas (black eyed peas as I call them) for first time. I too am in zone 8b, but in the Southern California desert. As a child I was babysat by a neighbor that cooked black eyed peas and cornbread, a lot, and I loved them! I have always been the only one in my family that ate them, so I guess it’s why I never grew them until now. Better late than never! I also am growing okra for the first time, another food that the rest of my family doesn’t eat, so, more for me, yum!
The homegrown taste so good. I know you will love them. I am not a fan of okra but it has so many benefits and I grow it every year because my daughter loves it. Thank you so much for watching!
This was my first year planting black eye peas as well...l love the plant; the flowers, and the beautiful dark green leaves. Mine are still in bush form and full of pods.
Yes! They are so beautiful. I love the color of the flowers and the fact that you can eat them fresh or dried. I hope you love them as well. thanks so much for watching!
This was wonderful. This is my first year growing these. I didn't think they were going to grow but once it got hot they exploded! They are such an interesting plant. I can't wait to harvest them. We moved to Virginia two years ago and I had my first bowl of southern cooked black eyed peas at a little cafe. So delicious! I looked forward to watching more.of your videos ❤️
Yay!! I am so glad that you are growing them and you will love them. We just planted our last sowing for the summer and they are taking off and YES they love HEAT that is why I love to grow them. While other plants in our garden struggle with the heat, the cowpeas take off on a growing spurt. They so good whether you prepare them fresh or dried. Thank you so much for watching!
I planted bush Queen Anne black eye peas, California blackeye peas, Texas Cream peas and Zipper Cream Cowpeas. All were supposed to be bush--3 ft high but everyone needs a trellis. But how fun to play with. They are all producing splendidly in Tampa, Florida Zone 9B.
Zipper cream peas sounds so good. I hat when that happens and then you have to find something for them to keep climbing and producing. You are definitely growing some amazing varieties. Stay cool because it is like a heat wave here in GA and thank you so much for watching!
Love the video. I love both of those Southern favorites: okra and field peas (brown Crowder peas). There are so many different names for peas. I use consecutive plantings of the peas because you can only harvest one time. Thanks for sharing.
Thank so much of watching. One of my main goals is succession planting...I try so hard but I will get there. For some odd reason I want everything to look full and lush at the same time. Going to practice succession planting for my fall vegetables.
Good Morning and Happy Wednesday The flowers are beautiful on the cow pea Peas definitely will provide more nitrogen for the soil Your plants look healthy .. Nice harvest
I just planted my black eyed peas or cowpeas today. I struggle here in florida zone 9a to grow anything in my hot summers. Love your video and your garden. Greetings from Jacksonville, Florida.
Thank you so much for watching! We are not too far from each other. I am in the Savannah , Ga area. Yes we definitely struggle in the summer months that is why I love the fall season that best. I can still get tomatoes but also start my greens. I hope you have great luck with the cowpeas because I absolutely love growing them.
@@MsAuraMatic i am just over the ocean from you in eleuthera, the Bahamas and i'm pretty sure I would be a zone 11-12. and my cowpeas I just planted a week or so ago are already 4" high so it seems the hotter it is the better
Great video! I am growing zipper cream cowpeas this year in northern VA. Your garden is beautiful. I also remember shelling bushels of cowpeas on my grandmother's porch as a child. It is one of my favorite memories of my time with her.
Thank you so much. My mom loves zipper peas too and yes shelling peas was definitely something the grand kids had to pitch in and help. My grandfather would bring so much home and we would also be on the porch shelling peas....those were the good times😀 Thank you so much for watching!
Great video, very knowledgeable and well spoken. I truly appreciate your camera focus struggles as we all deal with that. Keep them coming and God bless.
I LOVE black eyed peas!!! I’ve never had them fresh, tho. Great video!! Very informative!!! Thank you for sharing!!! We’re in 10a zone & May give them a go.
You definitely have to try them. They taste so good fresh and they do not take long to cook. Give it a go....super easy to grow. Thank you so much for watching
I am so glad that you found it helpful. I saved some seeds from last year so I will definitely be planting them again this year. Thank you so much for watching!
I just picked two 5 gallon buckets of purple hulls. First time to make a large garden full. I wanted to see the best way to hand shell the peas. Some of my hulls are crunchy dry, some purple, some getting there. I called my dad to come help me shell them.
purple hull peas are one of my mom's absolute favorite. I love the peas because you can eat them fresh or let them dry and store them. Thank you so much for watching!
Here in the south, we also like a variety similar to BEP's called pink eyed peas, which don't make tendrils. I couldn't find any so went to the store and bought a few pounds of black eyed peas. They came up well but after they started getting to about my knee in height, I noticed tendrils!! Needless to say, the field was a mess to harvest but I'm getting a pretty good harvest of peas regardless. 21pounds since I planed them on July 18 and much more to go!
I definitely need to look into the pink eyes peas. My mom likes the purple hull peas but the cowpeas definitely trial. Sounds you had an amazing harvest. Thank you so much for watching!
@@auyannaplants Yes, an amazing harvest but also an amazing mess due to the tendrils all tangled and tied up to each other! I also heard that zipper cream peas are even better than black eyed/pink eyed peas. There are a few sellers you can find by searching Google, which are presently out of stock but will likely have them early spring.
WELCOME and thank you for subscribing! You are going to love the cowpeas. I was taking pictures this morning because we are growing them in a different location but they are coming on strong and I love them at every stage in the growing process. Thank you for watching!
Thank you for so much information! Can you dry the green blackeyed peas? We had something chew on the stem and a few fell off, but I would like to dry them out with the rest of the others. We love blackeyed peas, topped with stewed tomatoes and onion over rice... YUM!
The longer they stay on the vine they will lose the green color. I have never picked them and dried them I either eat them fresh or let them stay long enough to dry and yes black eyed peas with tomatoes onions and rice....yes!!!!!! Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you for sharing!!! I want to grow some and get them started for a harvest before New Year's. This video is so informative and I really appreciate all of the details, even about the lovely flowers! Subbed
Thank you for sharing this valuable information. I waited too long to plant them, it is now the end of October and looking at a first frost in about 10 days and this is my first time growing them and I wanted to know what I can do with them if they are not dried on the plant. Now I know what to do with them. Thank you so much!!
You are so welcome. During the growing season, I will eat them fresh or you can bring them in and let them dry inside. I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!
Thank you so much I am so glad it was helpful. The fresh ones do not take long to cook at all. Maybe about 30 minutes depending on how many you have. They taste so good when you snap some of the tender pods in with the peas. Thank you for watching!
Beautiful plants and harvest! Thanks for the video. I tried diatomaceous earth to help with the aphids on mine too but they keep coming back. Going to keep trying!
Hello, I have grown cow peas also. I live in north central Florida and there’s a fine line to pick the peas before they mildew! Yikes. Also, I have a problem with large ants congregating around the top of the pods and I have to flick the beans before picking which is such a pain! Lol. It’s always when the beans are ready when the pods turn brown. If I pick them green, the peas shrink when they dry! They still taste yummy though but what a job! To me they taste like boiled peanuts😁
Are you further south? If you want a great Florida gardener check out David the Good (David Goodman) on TH-cam ...you will love him. He has grown amazing food.
Thanks so much for watching. My dad said that when he was young they would eat them fresh and so I tried them and they were delicious and tender. You definitely have to be selective with the ones you pick fresh because they can be a bit tedious to shell but so well worth it. I am going to plant more this season. Thank you so much for watching!
Southern Entertaining ... here’s something you might find fun to try (if you haven’t already)...I’ve sprouted some beans and seeds for salads or sandwiches. Some are tasty and some are a bit strong. I had bought lentils a looong time ago and never cooked them. I wondered if they would sprout and how they tasted. Let me tell you....I don’t think I will EVER cook them. Best tasing sprouts and cheap! Now I should throw some in the ground!
I think they will be fine with a little part shade. We move our cowpeas around in the garden and the ones last season had trees around them. They got sun but also afternoon shade and they did well. I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!
My flowers seem to be yellow, maybe I don’t catch them early enough. Plants are indeed very smart. We have drought here. I plant them in my pots where the soil is getting old and stale and figured putting the peas in with those old pots it would freshen up the soil a bit. These are beautiful. Does leaving them on the plant prevent it from setting more flowers?
Yes we saw beautiful yellow almost like a buttercup yellow blooms as well and they are so beautiful. Great idea on putting them in your old pots because it will add nitrogen to them. Thank you so much for watching!
Can the pods be cooked and eaten or just the beans? You also mentioned that the leaves, you just learned, can be eaten as well. Have you tried cooking them?
I have not tried cooking the leaves but I do take the younger pods and snap them into the peas. They are really good. In the south we called them peas with snaps. Thank you so much for watching!
They turn yellow over time. Not all will open as they are self fertile. Plants are indeed very intelligent. You can let them mature mostly on the plant and then harvest every month or so carefully from the tip. That stem that flowered will flower gain and Each successive harvest will have more pods. I’m on my 4 th harvest and they are now heavy with pods. I have a gas oven so I let nature pods dry in the oven with just the pilot light and they will dry nicely.
Wow you definitely have been getting some great harvests. Ours are drying on the vine and we are almost at the end but I ove the fact that you dry them in the oven. Thank you so much for watching.
New subscriber 😍. We were given 10 little seedling black eyed pea plants.. I have a question... Each little pod in the planter has 2 plants. Do I plant them all separate or put the 2 together... I love your garden. This is our first garden and we are enjoying it.
I like to plant one plant per hole that way they are not competing for nutrients. If you can carefully separate it and that way you can get have more. you can take like a butter knife and do this but if they are too close together and it is going to harm both just plant them together. I hope this helps. Thank you so much for watching and I hope you enjoy the peas😀
How long it will take to take sprouting & producing fruits. Because we have only 3months sun. I would like to know is this time sufficient to get seeds.
I was able to start harvesting around 60 days fresh peas but I definitely let some dry for later. I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!!!
That is so wonderful. We had the cow peas trailing on a cattle panel. You will definitely need some type of support. The okra do well here. We had one last year grow to 9ft tall. Each year I say I am not going to grow lots of okra because my youngest daughter is the only one in the house that eats them but I just planted 12😂 Thank you so much for watching!!
hello thank you for the video. Are dried black-eyed peas cooked the same way as fresh black-eyed peas (cooking time for dry vs fresh)? Does the taste change if the black-eyed peas are dried? Thank you
I do cook the fresh black-eyed peas the same as I cook the dried but the fresh black-eyed peas cooking time is way shorter and they just taste so good to me.
You should only harvest them when the pods turn black. That's when they will be ripe and they will taste so so so much better. They will taste completely different from the store bought ones. The store bought ones lack flavour
Yes they will love the trellis and grow beautifully up them. I am looking forward to having them again this season. They are so good. Thank you so much for watching!

I grew purple hull peas this year and next year garden I am going to grow black eyes peas adding something knew in the garden next year
I love growing these peas. They are so easy and I love that you eat them at multiple stages. Thank you so much for watching!
Great information thank you
Thank you so much for watching!
Beautiful plants and harvest! Thanks for the video. I tried diatomaceous earth to help with the aphids on mine too but they keep coming back. Going to keep trying!
Thank you so much. Try insecticidal soap on the aphids to see if that helps. Good luck and thank you so much for watching!
We are actually about 2 hours from Jacksonville. i will definitely check out the channel. Thank you for sharing and thank you for watching!
Nice video and channel! I wanted to see the finished dish!
When they begin to produce this year we can definitely film a video. Thank you so much for watching!
Will these grow well in partial shade. We have a long grow season here in Houston, but utilize partial shade to avoid having to water endlesssly
@@auyannaplants thank you..
Thank you
Thank you so much for watching!
🙌
@@auyannaplants you're awesome. Thank you so much. A soon as they are big enough I will get them planted
I also planted two large patches of black eye peas but they are getting really high as if they could have used a trellis....
Yes the variety that I have definitely needs a trellis. The get pretty tall. Thank you so much for watching!
Will thede grow in dappled sun.. with maybe 3 hrs of full sun?
I have only grown them in full sun but definitely give it a try. Thank you so much for watching!
Can these be frozen at this stage and do I need to blanch them first? Thank you in advance.
Yes you can definitely freeze them but I blanch them first and store. Hope this helps.
So the fresh, green ones you can just eat raw like green peas? Or do you still have to boil them?
I boiled mine and cook them that way. They don't take as long as the dried one. Hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!
How long it will take to take sprouting & producing fruits. Because we have only 3months sun. I would like to know is this time sufficient to get seeds.
I was able to start harvesting around 60 days fresh peas but I definitely let some dry for later. I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!!!
Here in the South they're called Crowder peas
Yes and my mom loves them! Thank you so much for watching!
just grew some for a school project do u need something for it to stand also grew okra
@@auyannaplants Thank you for the information!
Can you eat the bean pods instead of the beans?
Yes. After I got used to the taste, I like them better than green beans.
hey can we dry the green cowpeas in a jar for a few days to dry?
If I let my peas dry then I let them dry on the vine. Thanks for watching!
@@auyannaplants oh thanks!
Did you plant from seed?
Yes we plant the seeds directly in the ground. Hope this helps and thank you for watching!
Can the dogs eat the green pods of cowpeas
I am not sure of this. Sorry I couldn't help but thank you for watching!
You should only harvest them when the pods turn black. That's when they will be ripe and they will taste so so so much better. They will taste completely different from the store bought ones. The store bought ones lack flavour
Homegrown definitely has so much flavor. Thanks for watching!
didn't know you could eat the leaves!
thank you for watching!
No a fan of black eyed peas soooo I’m planting zipper cream & crowder cowpeas
Ii love zipper peas and crowder peas too! Thank you so much for watching!
We both have been duped by the cowpea! I also thought that they re a bush plant. Now i have to buy those trellises so that theyll grow better
Yes they will love the trellis and grow beautifully up them. I am looking forward to having them again this season. They are so good. Thank you so much for watching!
