  • The video is an artistic representation of a section from Hegel’s philosophy, The Phenomenology of Spirit.
The video begins, as does consciousness, with sense-certainty. This is the apprehension of an object.
Consciousness now realizes that perception is mediated through the self.
Particulars of the object are acknowledged.
Universals are recognized. Here, the object becomes lost by losing its unity.
The play of forces occurs as consciousness flux between universals and particulars
Through understanding, consciousness experiences force proper which presents the unification of the object.
As consciousness enters truth of self-certainty, participates in a circular movement from the external world into the self and back into the world.
Desire manifests because the consciousness becomes interested in things in the world and wants to act on them.
Negation is the work that consciousness does in attempts to satisfy desire.
The life and death struggle occurs when consciousness encounters another consciousness, which is threatening. Each desires the others death.
Master slave dialectic occurs as power roles are formed because one consciousness submitting and the other affirming.
The lord or mater falsely assumes that he/she have gained independence and that the slave is dependent upon the master.
The bondsman falsely believes that he/she is dependent upon the master and that the master is independent.
The slave works on things in the world for the master.
Soon the slave realizes that he/she is providing for the master which makes the master dependent on the slave.
The master also come to realize her/his own dependence upon the slave and sees the slave’s independence.
The two consciousness’ acknowledge each other as equal through mutual recognition and through this, both achieve independence.
I am a senior philosophy major at U of L. This video was made for my capstone project for a class that was entirely committed to Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. Hegel is difficult to understand. Feel free to use the comment area to discuss questions/ideas. I do not appreciate harsh criticism. I hope you found the video informative and entertaining.
    Thanks for watching!!!

Subhanallah; Great video. I don't know why, but it made me want to cry. Your dealing with Hegel's work is certainly unique. I enjoyed it a lot. Well done.

One does not simply fascinate Hegel by reciting Subhanallah smh...

It's sad how this video makes far more sense than Hegel.

At the basic level of sense-certainty you don't apprehend the object. You only apprehend "this". The "object" is already something with distinguished properties/values in opposition to other things.

This is a great, helpful conception for a video. Even if you littered at the end.
The Master/Bondsman relation seems a Marxist (re)interpretation of Hegel-the work itself speaking so metaphysically, do you believe Hegel meant it in such a literal social dynamic, means of production, etc.?

You're right on. I think Hegel meant Lordship and Bondage to be historical (like Marx) but metaphysical rather than material (a difference)

I believe marx got it wrong thinking the master/slave dialectic is a collective process, hegel seems to emphatize on an individual process (self-recognition it is not the same as being consciouss of class) to achieve freedom.

@@AB-ok7hu Applied to the class struggle is one way of understanding it. But Hegel was focused on the big picture thus can apply to all contexts

Exactly, it is freedom for the subjective spirit individually but it will only be fuñly possible when it is also accomplished by objective spirit.

The universal is the negation of the particular, is it not? The only way in which we can apprehend is by means of the negation

karl popper would disagree on this.

Popper famously misrepresented most of the people he disagreed with.
