With the very kind permission of the great Brian May himself, I’m posting this personally precious and previously unreleased REHEARSAL audio recording of me and my band jamming Chuck Berry’s iconic ‘Johnny B. Goode’ featuring Brian May on lead guitar.🎸
I explain how Brian May came to play with my band here… • GIMME SOME LOVIN' - EL... however, this is how this special and rare ‘Johnny B. Goode’ moment came about.
Basically, Brian May and Kerry Ellis were invited on as guests on BBC Radio 2's 'Weekend Wogan' for which I was musical director and featured artist on the show. The day of Brian and Kerry's rehearsal came. It went swimmingly well. Kerry was happy. Brian was happy. The band were happy. It had been a wonderful, good-spirited, highly-detailed yet massively enjoyable 60 minute rehearsal. Brian May's beautiful and unique guitar sound, that we have all grown to adore over the years, was right there in the room, driving the band. It was a privilege to be a part of. We were all saying goodbye to each other and preparing to move on to the next part of the rehearsal which would be rehearsing my three songs for the show the next morning. Brian was standing in front of my piano facing the band with his guitar around his neck thanking everybody when I rather cheekily said “Right, Johnny B. Goode” and on my piano, I launched into the opening few notes of that iconic guitar intro... as a tease! I remember Brian smiling at me whilst turning the volume knob of his guitar... “In A” I said. “I can do A” said Brian... And then he launched into the intro and away we went into a blistering and completely spontaneous jam of the iconic Chuck Berry song with yours truly taking lead vocals, Kerry joining the girls on background vocals and Brian playing two rounds of solos. WHAT. A. BLAST. WE. HAD!!! We were just having the greatest time!
