A D.I.Y background that cost under £10, before spending my hard earned money on a "Proper" background I wanted see if a background would work where I make my videos. What do you thing, I think it worked fairly well.

Good idea Jon. I agree that it works. As you say it’s less distracting and I thought the crop was fine 👍

@PhilipOlsen11 hi Phil hope you're well and thanks for commenting. It definitely seems to work well, but it's a pain to set up probably a good idea to film several videos and save on set up time.

Great video Jon. It’s a brilliant idea and as you say once ironed it will work really well. I invested in a handheld clothes steamer so I iron mine while it’s hanging. Kind regards David 📷👍😀

@@DavidLudlowPhotography Hi David hope you're well and thanks for the kind comment, agreed definitely needs ironing or a quick cycle in the washing machine to take the stiffness out so it hangs better, or and as mentioned in another comment try adding weight to the bottom.

Hi Jon, hope you are both well. The backdrop works really well. You might want to consider trying to release the clips on the sides of the backdrop and add them to the bottom.. clip them to the bottom or use some magnets either side to give the sheet some weight and then spray it with water and the creases should drop out, you could then also move onto getting a green sheet and you can have backdrops of different displays. You could even put your video in the background.

@@keithguppy Hi Keith hope you're well and thanks for commenting. Great suggestion for adding weights to the bottom, and I think the trip in the washing machine will take the stiffness out of it so hopefully I'll hang better. I definitely want to try a few different colours, the green screen is a great idea.

Alright, Jon. I hope you are well buddy 👍 I think backgrounds are a real pain in the arse and one of the things that you can think too much about. To be honest, I think the background to your conservatory looks nice. It also looks neat and gives a bit of character to the shot. If you had a mess in the background, then fair enough, a backdrop would be the way to go. I used to shoot in my living room about 5 years ago and the background was my living room. I really liked it because it was a nice contrast to the tech stuff that I'd be talking about. Where I am now is my my Mum's spare room and I had the most terrible wallpaper as a background 🤣 And because it's a tiny room with a bed and loads of junk in it, there wasn't any good angles to shoot from. So I threw up those foam panels behind me. They were only there to hide the hideous wallpaper but I also get the benefit of the foam helping a little bit with sound reflections. They don't sound proof, just help a bit with the room's acoustics/reverb. I've now gotten used to my background but it is a bit boring. Although, I suppose it helps to focus on what I may have on the table or even to focus on what I'm saying. However, given the choice, I would much prefer a nice "living" space like your conservatory. I would have a nice mid shot with a table in the foreground, the same as what I do now but with the nicer background filling the frame. Like I said though, backgrounds etc. are a pain in the arse and you can get all bent out of shape really quickly, chopping and changing your mind about it all. Anyway, I'm off to record a piece to camera with my boring foam panel background 🤣 Cheers, Dave.

@DavidHarry Hi Dave hope you're well and thanks for commenting, totally agree with your thoughts on the background, it wasn't until I was setting it up to do a proper video that I released what a faff it was. Agreed with normal household items it does add character and perhaps make the video less formal looking, it may not be used again as it add time to setting everything up, probably half an hour in total, just for a short video

@@lensmanonline Actually, Jon. You just said it best, "formal". I think less formal is better, even when talking about tech stuff like cameras and mics. Plus yes, there's a lot of faffing about if you cant leave something perminnetly setup. Cheers, Dave.

Hey Jon, hope you both are well. Not a bad DIY background, though yes maybe an iron? As for the crop, I like it with the new background with the slightly bigger crop. I have been trying the same thing too but but still unable to find a solution. The things you have to do just to record a vid eh? Stay Safe.

@@StephenJoines Hi Steve hope you're well and thanks for commenting. Yes I definitely think it needs a good ironing or a cycle in the washing machine to take the stiffness out of the material. To be honest I think it needs to be slightly bigger to give me more room to mess about with the crop. It takes me about a hour to get all the gear out and set up and then packed up after each video, the life of a TH-camr is not always a glamorous one.
