I'm currently reading "Moby Dick" which follows the adventures of a sailing ship hunting whales in the mid 1750's. Can't help but contrast the navigation and daily survival methods, completely devoid of electronics, with the current class of pleasure boats of today outfitted with multiple sources of electric power and all the comforts of home. How would you outfit your boat for survival if you were to spend 2-3 months on the open ocean, navigating by the celestial bodies and instinct, and your diet to consist of salted meat and the fish you could catch, no fresh fruit or vegetables but maybe some eggs from the few chickens aboard. Took a lot of courage to go abroad in those days! And those "calm and peaceful" days you are enjoying were dreaded by those early sailors as they were really stranded at sea using up their food and water supplies and often just drifting further away from their destinations. We have come a long way baby!
Yeah, its kind of like comparing the Oregon trail wagon train to modern RVing. :) My wife has said to me many times she has no interest in Blue Water sailing, she likes to always be able to see land.
Thanks Ray! I’m trying to estimate the temperature range based on your clothing. Needless to say I have no idea when I see you in summer attire and Anne with multiple layers. I’m guessing it must be over 20 C during the day?
I've been wearing shorts, t-shirt and sweater with occasional light windbreaker jacket since the trip started. Mornings and rainy days are usually around 12 - 16C, sunny days 18 - 25C It can feel hotter or colder depending on the wind as the ocean temps here are 10 - 12C. When in or closer to large sounds or straits its cooler than in narrow inlets and around the small islands. Anne is on the flybridge into the wind it can be cold, especially with damp humidity on some days. Going with the wind in the sun it heats up as there isn't much breeze. Right now we are at Kwatsi Bay, its a deep inlet with tall mountains all around so like a valley it can get heat up when the sun is out but mornings are cool with a marine fog layer. I've found that most nights because we are right on the ocean not far from land masses it tends to fog/mist up so the dry desert has it beat for start gazing. Also we don't tend to stay up late on the boat, being summer its light out to around 10pm here and by that time we are beat and ready for bed. We trend to be early risers as that is when the ocean is generally calmest. You'd need to be up till at least midnight before the stars would be fully out.
