Intersesting video. It seems that Dometic fridges are all different. We have a new Dometic 3 way fridge that we replaced our original Dometic fridge from our PW about 18 months ago and it has 3 shelf type bins in the door. All open bins, the bottom one has fins that will hold the 2 litre/quart containers of milk and juice plus the fins will keep beer bottles/cans from moving around. The mid shelf is fixed medium height holding jam jar sized items and the top shelf bin nicely holds a dozen eggs with the container on the side allowing for cheese or butter in the little bit of space left over. We do not have a bottom bin in the fridge itself. It came with two shelves plus the freezer. Our new Dometic 3 way has worked great and we have had no temperature issues with it and it generally needs to be set in the middle of the temperature range 3/5 for hot climates (Arizona, Nevada and New Orleans) and turned down to level 2/5 when in the north. The freezer works very well and keep ice cream cold and other frozen items frozen. It will freeze the fridge if you turn it up to 4/5 or 5/5 and I have put in a remote wired temperature sensor with the reader double sided stuck to the fridge panel above the door for monitoring. Our fridge stays a fairly constant 35/36 degrees unless the door has been opened at which point it doesn’t take long to jump up in temperature because the space is not that large. Tip: black electrical tape works well to keep the wire away from the door gasket and hides it virtually from view neatly (for your fan wire and our remote wired temperature sensor). I think I have seen the bins you cannot find at Target at Walmart. Thanks for the informative videos.

I used 4 thin blue ice freezer packs - during the night I would move to the freezer, then in the hot hours of the day, I would move below to supplement the cool power of the refrigerator. Reversed in the night. Also, I had a straw tube leaving the Dometic for draining water outside. Tiny bugs were in my refrigerator. They crawled up the clear drain line. I put a wrap at the outlet of window screen 1" and secured with a tiny zip lock to solve that problem. Your fan solution was excellent. Thank you.

It's so funny that we just got back from several days in Joshua Tree and the fridge worked beautifully. But before we left I ordered a new compressor fridge. You think maybe the Dometic "knows" it's getting the boot? ;-)) I do the same thing with ice bags but only carry two because I have to have space for ice.

@@FromShetoMe Yes, the new compressor fridges are a huge improvement over the ammonium cycle technology. Still watch for little bugs crawling up the drain tube, seal with window screen wrap and plastic tie.

Thx for another great vid. Very creative ideas. We have a class C with a bigger fridge but temp flux is a problem for us too. That seems to be the challenge with most absorption type refrigerators. For my jeep setup, I have a Dometic CFX40 that is a compressor type and it is soooooo much better at maintaining a temp (even frozen food) while barely using any energy to do it. The downside is the cost... On longer trips over a month or if we're boondocking a lot, we throw the CFX40 in the motor home as a bonus freezer and our lithium batteries don't even notice it. Good luck on the Alaska trip, we'll be following along.

Very creative. I would take the fridge out and put in a new one. We face the same similar issues with out Roadtrek SS Agile our fridge is great but there are many appliances we don't need and never use like the generator, awning, microwave, bad shower and toilet. I am talking to "Freedom vans" and maybe going to have a custom build. The Sprinter would cost about $42,000.00 and $70,000.00 for the build out. Tough choice to start all over gain.

I have that same refrigerator but mine was made in 2012. I bought it used, and it only works in elec (if generator is running or hooked up to shore power). Spent about $500 trying to get it fixed (5 times). Of course every RV shop, except last one, claims to have fixed it. Last one said it may be vapor locked after charging me $135. Then said they could take it out, turn it upside down for a day for another $250 to un-vaporlock, and that may or may not work. I could almost buy a new absorption refrigerator for what I have spent trying to fix this. After seeing that two of you have had issues with Dometic absorption refrigerator, I am going to have it removed and use as extra refrigerator at my house (at least it works on elec). Thinking maybe there is issue with this European model but Dometic is of no help. Since I usually boondock, elec frig doesn’t help me. I tried several compressor refrigerators (don’t bother with smallest Dometic CDF-11-it is way too small to carry much of anything but too large to move to back of RV if placed between front seats). U can get Alpicool on Amazon for about $200-209. It holds a lot more and is still relatively small. Tried one with internal battery that I initially loved, but seemed batteries didn’t recharge after driving all day. It is about same size as Alpicool for $249. Kept them on my kitchen countertop with rubber feet from Lowe’s which prevents movement during driving. Both of those require transferring milk to shorter containers like mason jars because they are too short. I’m not a fan of chest style but at least stuff doesn’t fall over. Am definitely going to stick with compressor refrigerator but may go with front door opening style, which isn’t as efficient I hear. I don’t have solar, but none of them ran my batteries down at night, but small models. Another plus is u don’t have to be level, and they get colder than absorption refrigerators. One disadvantage is u can use as refrigerator or freezer, but not both at same time, so no freezer to make ice for drinks. Only really large models have dual zones. I did take container full of ice for 3 day trip and only melted a little, but had on a very cold setting. Love all your common sense ideas. U have given me so many ideas that I have copied and have on my to-do list. Thanks for sharing.

I have heard from so many viewers about their fridge problems. We're going to try to get to a Pleasure Way Rally where they often have someone from the factory to help with repairs.
Another viewer with the same rig as ours has a Dometic chest style fridge that he runs off a solar battery. That sounds like a great option for boondockers or full timers. I'll spend more time looking into it depending on how things go on this trip.

Actually, next Friday's video is the clothes we packed. I needed to get ahead so I wouldn't feel rushed this week.
Our son keeps sending us pictures of the nasty weather in Tahoe. They are all so over it as I'm sure you are. They went to Death Valley a few weeks back just to get out. By the time we get there, I hope that's the end of the snow. We will have a slow trek up the Owens Valley this week so John can call on the Marines at Pickel Meadow. Then visiting the grand kids in SLT for a few days.

I’ve seen a couple videos where the RV owners found out that the venting to the outside was restricted by the RV it’s self. I think they added an additional outside fan to increase the air flow so the fridge can cool down properly. Wish I could remember who they were but I know there are videos on YT that talk about the problem.

A fan does help but an absorption fridge has serious limitations in warm weather. In a subsequent video I share the installation of a new compressor fridge which solved the problem.
