Marathas weakened mughals so much and make them reoccupied in Deccan for so many years without success. This gave space to other anti mughal forces including sikh misals to gain strength. The brutal killing of samhaji in Maharastra awakened marathas, the non rajput peasantry to rise in revolt and brutal killing of ninth Guru and Sahibjadas of Tenth guru and Banda Bahadur awakened pesantry in Punjab. The greatest contribution of Shivaji was that he brought masses into the struggle for self respect. Till the time of Shivaji only Rajputs had the duty to fight for the state. This awakening of other caste and pesantry into this struggle was a pardism shift and resulted in weakening of Mughals and bring Maratha rule in Maharastra and other parts of India and Sikh rule in Punjab.

Auranagjeb died in Maharashtra spending his last 27 years fighting with Maratha not in Punjab or Sikhs, understand this. Those Tom and Jerry so called conflicts which you listen to in Folk songs are just some fights with Mughal local hawaldars or Mansabdars. Greatest and most just Mughal Emperor was Aurangzeb. Read book of American professor Audrey Truschke.
60% of his administration staff were Hindus he rebuilt mosques, temples and churches on people's request . In his time mughal empire GDP constituted 35% of world gdp.
British ships tried to invade and occupy Surat, the Mughal naval base. Emp Aurangzeb marched and recaptured Surat hanging all the British officers from the masts in their respective ships. Brits never came back until a 100 years after that.
When Great Emp Aurangzeb passed away, his possessions were, a sword, shield, 30 prayer caps, few prayer mats and beads he stitched and stringed himself. A great humble soul.

Sikhs may believe that the zafarnama killed him, but he died many days later. He was actually very frustrated and disheartened by his own failure to defeat the Marathas. That is why he stayed in Maharashtra 27 years and ultimately saw his wish for dominion come to nothing. He had achieved no lasting victory in the deccan and could not conquer the Marathas.
I am pained and surprised by the hatred for Marathas shown by the majority of commentators here. Clearly they have no knowledge of the complete history of India. They must read history of entire India not only Sikh struggle, grow up and accept that there is more to it than their own viewpoint only. Stop hatred against other communities.

Aurangzeb's Poem.. to understand the meaning of the text of his poem, one needs to understand what a Muslims hold as a belief, with regards to this life on earth, the here after and forgiveness.
To say from reading the poem, Aurangzēb was a man who was bereft with sadness is far, far from the truth, as one needs to reflect on what the Muslim belief is about life on this world, as somewhat paraphrased below
    👇🏻
A true Muslims always believes that this life here on earth, is a just twinkle in time compared to the life in the hereafter. This life won't even be remembered when one is in the hereafter.
A true Muslim knows that forgiveness can only come from the compassion of Almighty and not necessarily from just our deeds.
A Muslim should never be pompous to think he has gained paradise and forgiveness.. he has to always strive in his life, till his last breath to be humble and ever committed to working towards being humble by asking for forgiveness till the very end of life, so that he could be forgiven for any sin that he may have committed, which may or may not be in his knowledge, no matter how piously he may have tried to live his life.
People who aren't well versed with Islam, cannot understand this concept in Islam and could therefore make assumption that the poem of Aurangzeb was a f him being sad and full of guilt in his last years, when in fact he remained humble and knew that no matter how big or strong his kingdom was, he remained conscious to that fact that he was human and would err in his life and that he should ask for forgiveness till his last breath.
That takes a lot of humility, considering the position Aurangzēb held during his life time

This madam will say one side history of marata Empire if you need to get knowledge on history then keep religion side and learn history
Marata EMPIRE was totally collapsed in 1700
But after the death of Aurangzeb Aalamgir radiallahu talaa anhu
In 1720 it is once again boosted but that time no mughal Empire like babur to Aurangzeb that much skill ruler are not there

Like all Hindutva forces of this day, this madam cannot understand or is incapable of understanding that rulers are never the most powerful enemies as is made out here. We Sikhs have started placing role of Mughal empire on Sikhism as that of the second (or even first powerful enemy. The most (vicious) powerful enemy (as defined by Buddha in Lotus Sutra) was the godless brahminical force (that had gained this strength by the time Shiva ji like forces came into play in later part of Mughal empire. Guru Gobind Singh ji had started allying with Mughals and has praised Aurangzeb in Zafarnama. According to Guru ji Aurangzeb did not go by Islamic teachings and played in the hands of priests.
